Weekly Update #3

21 July 2019

I’m still playing around with the BLAEO formats, trying new things, hoping to find what format I like the best. I think I like this one better (at least for weekly posts). This week I’ve tried a lot of new games and actually finished only one. I’m still working on Blockwick 2 and Hollow Knight, both are very much fun. Can’t say the same for Superflight or DISTRAINT though. Sad.

Beaten/Completed

Rusty Lake Paradise

5.0 hours, 32 of 50 achievements

More

I completed my first run of the game, and did 50% in achievements. I'll probably play this again to do 100% achievements in the near future, but not immediately because one run of this game is enough for me right now. It's an interesting puzzle game with a morbid story, which gets even worse as the game progresses. I enjoyed playing it, but it didn't become my new favourite game or anything. I'll consider buying the other two Rusty Lake games if I see a decent discount/bundle, but it's not a priority at this point.

It became a little tedious at times, but that might be more about me than the game itself. The puzzles are sometimes hard, sometimes easy, most of the time pretty doable. I only had to look up a walkthrough maybe 2-3 times, which is a very low amount considering this game has 10 chapters/plagues and each of them has 3-4 puzzles/puzzle-ish scenarios.

Right now, I'm a bit bored of this game, so I'm glad I completed it. I hope I won't be as bored with it when I eventually decide to play it again to go for 100%!

Made Progress

Blockwick 2

14.4 hours, 7 of 14 achievements

More

I'm almost done with this game! Since last week, I've finished 4 more levels and added 10+ hours to my total game play of Blockwick 2. It was my main game this week, and I'm really happy with the progress I made (with my boyfriend, we're playing it together).

I'm really happy that I bought it during the summer sale honestly. Money well spent! Would definitely recommend this game to puzzle lovers.

Hollow Knight

23.1 hours, 6 of 63 achievements

More

I've played another 10 hours of this game this week. I'm really enjoying it so far, even though it has its frustrating moments.

This week's highlight for me was defeating Soul Master probably. I was so frustrated with that one. It took me 2 days and countless tries, but when I finally did it, it was such a great moment. I literally screamed with happiness lol. Since then, I haven't defeated any other boss, but I'm very happy with my progress in the game, and I'm already sad that it will end at some point. I'm definitely looking forward to Hollow Knight: Silksong, whenever it may be coming.

DISTRAINT: Deluxe Edition

0.5 hours, 0 of 16 achievements
From GOG library

More

DISTRAINT: Deluxe Edition is actually in my GOG library as it was given for free some time ago. I recently thought of playing it when I bought Humble Bundle's Very Positive 3 bundle, since DISTRAINT 2 was also in it. At first it was interesting and new, but it became boring and monotone very quickly. I'm still thinking to play and finish it, but I'm not very… hyped up about playing the second game, to be honest. I'll probably use a walkthrough or something if I get stuck at some point for long, because I rather not waste my time trying to figure out what's going on. I will give it a serious shot, but I won't get stubborn and spend so much time to pass the little puzzles by myself.

This should be a lesson for me: don't buy the sequel for a game you haven't played yet--you might not like it!

Superflight

1.8 hours, 14 of 24 achievements

More

This is the first game from the studio GrizzlyGames who made Islanders, a game I completed in June. I enjoyed Islanders so much that I went and bought this from their page on Steam.

Superflight is another beat-your-highscore game with similar achievements. However, I didn't like this one as much as Islanders, unfortunately. I'm probably not going to try to make this 100% achievements, as it's rather time consuming and not that much fun. I still like the game's mechanics and idea, but the gameplay itself kind of got old after a few hours of playing.

It does have nicely generated maps, though.

Borderlands 2

2 hours, 4 of 75 achievements
Family Sharing

More

I started playing Borderlands 2 by using a friend's library, because I don't own the game and I didn't want to buy it before I'm sure that I will continue playing it. However, I still count it as progress made because I'm thinking to buy it if I ever make it to 20-25 hours played. I don't have much to say about it other than I'm late to the party by a lot of years, but that's fine because shooter games are definitely not my type of games. However, I did enjoy the 2 hours I spent playing this game with a friend, so I might eventually do get the game for my own library.

Dropped

103

0.5 hours, 0 of 5 achievements

More

I ended up refunding this game.

Last week, I was sure that I'll eventually go back to 103 and play it, without using a walkthrough/guide. This week I decided that I've lost interest in this game, simply because I don't understand what's going on in it. Whatever I know of in the game comes from a guide, and I don't particularly enjoy playing games that way. I rather not play it, thanks.

I bought it from the summer sale, and had only half an hour, so I decided to try my luck with refunding even though it has been longer than 2 weeks, and Steam accepted my request! Good for me, I guess. If in the future I want to play it again, I can simply wait for another sale and buy it again. Right now, I rather not have this game in my library, even if it has nice graphics and a mysterious atmosphere.

Oh I remember being stuck on Soul Master for days too when I still didn’t fully grasped the game. The only boss that took me way more time was Nightmare King (have fun btw :-D). Hollow Knight was one of the best indies I played in my life and I’m always happy to see more people enjoy it. Good luck on next bosses!

I think I did grasp the game, but I’m still bad at it lol. I keep dying at the easiest places XD Nightmare King sounds like a hard one, I hope I won’t go crazy trying to beat him. Hollow Knight is really good!! I don’t know how I didn’t play it before. A friend gifted it to me during the sales, and I’m playing it obsessively since then. Thank you!

JaffaCaffa

Well done on beating Soul Master!! While I haven’t played HK yet, I definitely know that feeling of shouting with relief. :D Best of luck with the rest of the bosses!

Also I had no idea Islanders was by the Superflight dev, that’s awesome. I really enjoyed the sense of movement with the flying, gave an adrenaline rush while still being pretty relaxing.

Thank you! You should definitely play HK. It’s SO. GOOD.
Have you played Islanders? =)

JaffaCaffa

Agreed, definitely need to remedy that. As someone who loves platformers, I’ve been told by a couple friends that it’d be right up my alley. :)

I have not played Islanders, though it’s very high up on my WL! I meant to pick it up this sale, but Winter sale for sure. I watched someone play the first level for 30 minutes and it was soo addictive and relaxing.

Blue Ϟ Lightning

Soul Master is awful…I was also stuck for ages on Hornet Sentinel…so good luck with that.

Thanks! I’m doing my best, but the game is really good at challenging me =P
