Update 8 : Games I played in April 2019

Hacknet

Hacknet

9 of 11 achievements

Okay game. If you like to remember commands and typing them in really fast, got a bit repetitive in the end. Not sure how to describe it.

Observer

Observer

Not my kind of game. Too many constantly flashing lights in the nightmare scenes for my taste. Could not finish the game.

Stories: The Path of Destinies

Stories: The Path of Destinies

9/10
25.5 hours
36 of 37 achievements

What can I say about this one… It’s a bit like the movie groundhog day, but a lot of fun. Beaten all stories. Last achievement though is a pain in the ***. You have to learn every possible skill in all levels. Problem: you only get 1 skill point for each level and by the end of the story you are at least 7-10 levels short. Each level needs about 30k exp. The max exp you can get for a level is about 10k if you hit the correct combos and you have to replay the same 5-10min of the game over and over again for several hours. Other than the grinding for the last achievement I really liked the game. Still missing the last achievement. Need another 4 levels, but have not found the time yet.

Battle Chef Brigade

Great game. Played through it in a day. It's basically a gem matching game, with puzzle and fighter elements. Your char tries to enter the Battle Chef Brigade. In order to do so you have to challenge other chefs to battles. You have to use ingredients that you get by killing monsters and then cooking them up into a dish (that's the gem matching part) that the judges will enjoy better than your opponents.
The game also has a really nice story. I enjoyed it a lot.

Yakuza 0

Wow. What a game. Nearly 50 hours in and I'm only in chapter 8. Well I kind of get lost in the side missions and mini games. I will definitely play more of it this month.

So I played 5 games in April of which I finished 3, abandoned 1 and am still playing the last one.

Unfortunately my backlog grew quite a bit. Again…I activated a bunch of old keys, won some GA’s and was gifted two games by really nice people (thank you Iocaio and Oppenh4imer).

old activated keys

SG wins since last update

Thanks Oppenh4imer :)

Thanks Iocaio :)

I expected great things from observer, wish there could be a path or some settings to reduce that problems.
About path stories, I played that one on ps4 (ps plus) and completed it 100% too, is a great game.
Have fun with plague evolved, used to play it on mobile.

Concerning observer the game as a whole is not bad, but I got really disoriented by the flashing lights (my eyes don’t take too kindly to flashing lights or bright lights [be it sunlight, headlights etc] in general after I had laser surgery). If you have it, give it a try. You might like it :)

Иιɢʜᴛᴍᴀᴢᴇ

I do have the same problem with lights, I encourage you to install f.lux if you don’t already have it as well as Screen Shader if you have some problems with white internet pages (under colors, simply pick the black and set it as a percentage you find agreeable).

As for the game, I’m unfortunately unable to help. Sadly some games don’t think of people who have that sort of problem, maybe that could be something to request to the developer or it worth looking for some kind of patch ?

samwise84

Thanks. I’m using both actually 😉
I think this part of the game is on purpose. You are after all in a nightmare version of the mind of someone who just recently was murdered. It should be disorienting. That all the flashing gives me extra trouble with my sight 🤷🏻‍♀️
But at least they give an extra warning for people with seizure disorders in the beginning.

I just chalk it up under games that could have been great, but unfortunately I can’t play through for some reason.
“Luckily” for me my backlog is so big that I won’t run out of games anytime soon.

Иιɢʜᴛᴍᴀᴢᴇ

Damn it, it’s sad when it’s like that :(
I’m not surprised you have a big backlog though, you’re so generous and deserve all those games (backlog or not ^^).

YAKUZA 0 TEN OUT OF TENNNNNNNNNN

ohhhh man, you have SO MUCH SHIT past chapter 8. I’m eagerly awaiting your reaction to the lead up and climax of the game!!!

Ah, we all know that feeling of just missing that one achievement in a game! Also, thanks for bringing up what you said about Stories: The Path of Destinies, that sounds annoying and tedious. Still interested in the game, but at least I know ahead if I play it in the future.

Anyway, it’s good to hear you had fun with the other 3 games you played :) Battle Chef’s art is cute and Yakuza 0, oh Yakuza.. I always hear/read positive feedback from BLAEO/SG/internet folks on it. Really does seem like an amazing game! Though would you mind sharing some personal, quick pros & cons about it? :) Things you like and perhaps dislike..

And congrats with your new SG wins & gifts btw! I played a good chunk of Owlboy recently, but there’s still more to do. It’s a beautiful game with great soundtrack too. Many charming characters, even the ones you meet and only interact with once. The only biggest things I really dislike and don’t enjoy are the boss fights and controls on keyboard (especially at the beginning, but now I’m slightly getting the grip of it.. after hours of playing though. Not sure if it’s me to blame or the game for these controls!).

These are just my personal experiences of course, so I’m curious and look forward to reading how you feel about it, if you play in May and share some thoughts!

Ah, we all know that feeling of just missing that one achievement in a game!

Usually I’m not an achievement hunter, but I try to get as many as possible and if they are just within reach, but I still can’t get them, it’s just…

Also, thanks for bringing up what you said about Stories: The Path of Destinies, that sounds annoying and tedious. Still interested in the game, but at least I know ahead if I play it in the future.

The game itself is really nice and fun. It’s just this last achievement. And I just don’t get it. Why make it so hard to reach it. You already should have all others by then and have finished all stories. I don’t know why they set the EXP needed for leveling up so high, when the max EXP you can get from a level is so low that you have to play the level several times just to get 1 level.

Though would you mind sharing some personal, quick pros & cons about it? :) Things you like and perhaps dislike…

Mind you I’m only halfway through the game and a more comprehensive list will probably follow when I have finished the game. But so far I really like the story and the near movie-like cutscenes, which can go on for a long time. But then this is also kind of a con. The audio output is entirely in japanese, which means you either have to speak japanese or you’ll have to read the english subtitles. But the scrolling speed of those is pretty slow. On some scenes you can speed this up by pressing a button, but on others you can’t speed it up or even skip the cutscene at all (you might be replaying it for an achievement and don’t want to spend all your time watching the cutscene again), which can get annoying. Especially if it’s one of the longer scenes (~up tp 15 minutes).
I also like all different minigames and sidequests (though not the biggest fan of the karaoke and disco games, since I’m not the best at rythm games). They give a great variety to an already big story/world. And the nice thing is, you are not forced to do them. And you can start them any time and finish them later or just concentrate on them and ignore the main storyline. Whatever you want.
Well another con, at least for me, the game has QTE (I hate those with a vengance XD ), but then they are pretty mild and give you plenty of time to react. So it’s not as bad as some other games I’ve played before.
I also like the fighting part of the game. Each character has three different fighting styles + a weapon style which you can invest your money in and different opponents (might) need different styles to beat them. But there we get to another part that can get annoying. The better abilities cost a ton of money. You can farm cash by beating up groups of opponents that pop up around the city and this is okay for the cheaper ones, but if you want the expensive ones that can get really grindy. Though you can play certain minigames where you can farm a lot of money (and if you want the achievements, you have to finish those anyways) around midgame.

I would also definetly recommend you use a controller for gameplay. In my opinion it plays better/easier with a controller.

Honestly I can’t think of anything else right now. But that’s probably since it is 2am here XD

And congrats with your new SG wins & gifts btw! I played a good chunk of Owlboy recently, but there’s still more to do. It’s a beautiful game with great soundtrack too. Owlboy sounds interesting. But controlls sometimes can be really wacky. I’ve had my problems with my share of wacky controlls before, but so far that has never deterred me from a game. Especially if I like it otherwise.

These are just my personal experiences of course, so I’m curious and look forward to reading how you feel about it, if you play in May and share some thoughts!

Not sure If I will get to it in May, since I have a lot of other games on my to do list, but I’ll share my thoughts as soon as I have played it.

I’m sorry for this late reply, samwise :O life’s been emotional & hectic these few days! I enjoyed reading your reply, especially the detailed thoughts about Yakuza, so thank you your time & sharing them :) And again great progress – keep us posted and have fun with the backlog 🤘🏼

samwise84

After playing owlboy for quite a bit myself I can assure you that’s the game controls that are bad not you. I think I was stuck for about an hour at the last boss because of the controls.

moonie

Interesting then, that there’s someone else who has experienced it too :o It’s not fun when you die constantly / stuck with a boss. And you’re at the last boss already? You beat me! Still not even halfway through (last stopped after finishing the big Battle of Advent mission)

I wish you a good luck at the last boss fight if you still haven’t passed it 👍🏻

samwise84

Finally finished late last night. I think the only real tips I can give you is learn the boss patterns and learn to dodge their attacks. It might be tedious, but after a while you improve. And if it is not working at all maybe watch a YouTube video or two. It not always helped me when I was stuck but it gave me some ideas how to dodge. And sometimes that’s all you need. That and a lot of patience.

moonie

Thanks for all the tips!
