Finished in May (1-7)

I’ve got a bit lazy with reviews this month and now I have quite big pile of finished games to write about. Well, lets start with them:

  • Gnog

A short, 2 hours puzzle game, in which you basically have a bunch of diaromas made of robots heads. You need to turn on each robot, by solving a puzzle - you click on the head, its opening, inside there is a little scene with some creatures, you solve their problem, etc, etc. The riddles where easy anough, but I had to think a bit, so all in all it was really nice game.

This is a kind of game I like. You are going through a simple yet pretty landscapes, solving riddles and listening to a story. A walking sim with a riddle from time to time. All puzzles were of the same type - you had to put gears on the box in correct order to power it. They got more, and more compicated when the game progressed, and I must admit, I checked a solution for the last one, because it was a bit too much for my brain. The story was interesting, although the ending was a bit disappointing. And that’s why I’m lovering a score a bit.

A classic platformer. It is calling itself “metroidvania” but I don’t feel it really is one. You are a bunny version of Indiana Jones. Well, for real you are humen cursed into a bunny, but let’s don’t focus on technicallities. You released ANOTHER curse, this one a bit more problematic than excess of fur. So you are going through levels to fix everything. In every level you are unlocking a new power, which you have to use to progres (glide, rolling, double jump - classics), you can also return to old levels - there are collectables which you can get only after unlocking powers in further levels. It is “metroidvania-like” but for me true metroidvania is one big map - here you don’t need to ever backtrack. But all in all - nice little game.

Outcast - Second Contact

Remake of one of the first open world games, and I must stay - it is still a fun to play, if you remember, that the main design is over 20 years old. The basic gameplay is simple - a bit of shooting, a bit of talking ith NPC, a few simple riddles - standard open world stuff. Plus standard early 2000 quest design “run from one preson to another 4 times, to finish quest”. What I particulary like is the world design - they try to explain some stantard game problems, like “what is a save”, “why an alien race know english”, “why there is no women and children here”, “why I cannot use enemies weapons”, “why in alien world I’m finding bullets to my gun”. And I must say most of those things are explained quite nicely. What I don’t like is the ending - it was awfully rushed. I still don’t understand, why the bad guy did bad guy’s things, and I didn’t really care about people, they expect me to care about. All in all - nice, if you are curious, what was the beginning of Open World genre.

Classic on rail shooter - you are flying on a dragon and shooting to enemies. Fun, but very, very short (about 1 hour) and with problematic controls (moving your dragon is moving also place, where you shoot, so you cannot effectively dodging bullets and aiming at the same time).

  • Journey To The Savage Planet

Journey To The Savage Planet

This is a game made for me. It has so many aspects I love. It’s an FPS metroidvania - you are on an Alien planet and you need to explore it, and solve it’s mystery. The world look like something we were promised from No Man Sky - it full of weird creatures and as a part of your exploring mission you need to scan everyone of them. There are TONE of collectibles, most of them hidden quite smartly, and you need to think how to get them. Health boosters, crafting items, which you can use to upgrade your gear, alien diaries… I was going through some areas 4-5 times and still finding new stuff, I didn’t notice earlier. Gameplay is quite simple - jump, shoot some animals, ugrade gear to get new abilities - it is not a hard game, which I like, because I can focus on exploring and searching for secrets. The story is written in Other Worlds/Borderlands style - wacky and not taking itself too seriously. I prefer a bit more serious stuff, but it wasn’t annoying. The only problem I had is that controls could be a bit problematic from a time to time - especially jumping. I never rage quit, but I missed a few jumps, I should be able to do. But right now it is one of the best games I played this year.

This game is famous as one of wackiest games of all times and yup… it deserves this title. The King of Cosmos accidentally destroyed all stars, and now you need to help to replace them - with a stuff collected on Earth. You are going through levels rolling a ball, to which sticks everything, that is smaller than it. You are rolling, ball is getting bigger, you can collect new stuff, and you need to get to a specific diameter of the ball, before time ends. It would be a really good game, if not for a one little thing - THE CAMERA IS AWFUL. Really, I tried to play it on keyboard, then on pad, and I couldn’t work with those freaking camera controlls - a lot of the times, I just roll blindly and hope for the best. I finished this game, and even had some fun, but it could be so, so much better If I had any idea, where I am going….

Now I really want to play Outcast, it has been in my backlog for years :D.

Thanks for the Outcast review! I wasn’t aware that it’s considered the starting point of open world games. That and the rest of your review make me really curious about the game. With 21 hours it doesn’t seem too long either…
