Update 18: Fourth week of August

Unfortunately this is a bit late, since my laptop seems to be dying and I tried to save it for most of the day.

Well for this week I can announce 3 beaten/completed games + 1 I had beaten earlier and just completed.

A really fun game for me. In the beginning I was a bit overwhelmed by the big, open world and I needed some time to get used to it. But I love pinball and pinball games so I really loved this one. It is a bit confusing in the beginning since you are not really told what to do in the different tables, but basically when in doubt hit everything is a good start ^_^
And if you are like me and like and are good at pinball it is not that hard to clear the tables. I can only imagine that it might get frustrating for people who are not that great at pointing the ball in the right direction.

A good story and I'm glad that I picked it up. Sometimes a bit gory, but honestly that is more in the way the fables actually were portrayed back in the day (and I know that the game is after a graphic novel and not the original fables) and not the whitewashed version that you get nowadays. I found the story engaging and actually wanted to know what was going on at every moment. Was a bit sad about the ending though.

I started playing this back in 2017 and for some reason abandoned it, even though I really liked it. So when I saw a review here a couple of days ago I was reminded of it again. Thank you Garcias for suggesting that I should pick it up for the BLAEO theme. Even though I had to dig out an old save from a nearly dead, really old PC.
It's a excellent RTS game, that lets you replay some of the World War 2 battles surrounding the D-Day in Normandy. Like in any RTS you have to build up a base camp and build up your army (which consists of anything from normal infantry soldiers up to tanks) and either capture waypoints or kill certain enemies or defend a place for some time. I finished chapters 10-15 for the challenge.

green = PoP thanks enkabard & Cjcomplex for the picks
red = Challenge Me thanks Tristar for challenging me
blue = PAGYWOSG
grey = BLAEO monthly theme

And I completed one game that I had previously beaten:

Games I’m currently playing/completing:

List of shame:
Well luckily it’s again very short. I was gifted one game by MouseWithBeer and activated one free HB game.

So that means that for this week I’ve beaten/completed 3 new games and have gotten 2 new ones, which means this week it’s a -1 for my backlog and overall for the August, it’s -1 in games I’ve beaten/completed to games I’ve bought and -2% in unplayed/unfinished games. So over all a great progress for one month. We’ll see how next months will go, considering that my vacation is nearly over.

Ah yes, The Wolf Among Us is a great game. It’s actually the only “true” Telltale game I ever played, so I cannot compare it to others ofc. But I enjoyed it a lot and I think that it is a great game. What did you not like about the ending? Do you mean you were sad because the ending was sad or because you wished for another ending?

CoH is in my unfinished backlog as well…so it takes about 30 hours to finish the game…that doesn’t sound too bad. Maybe I’ll give it a go sooner than I planned :)

samwise84

I’ve played The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones telltale games. And I liked them both. Well I’m kinda sad that Toad and his son were send to the farm. I liked them. The Crooked Man got what he deserved.

And finishing CoH takes about 15 to 20h. As I’ve written I had to get an old savegame, but the one with the most levels done was corrupted. So I had to replay some. But it was totally worth it. I’m just talking about the base game, though there are also the stand alone DLC’s Tales of Valor and Opposing Fronts, whcih I still have to play yet.

Vito

Oh you are right, I totally forgot about that. It was sad, true.

So CoH is even shorter? Well…maybe that’ll move it up my backlog a lot. The DLCs would fit this month’s theme perfectly, wouldn’t they? I mean if you were going to play them anyway…

samwise84

Well yes and no, since they are for some reason not marked as DLC but as stand alone games with their own app ID. So I have them listed here as such and I don’t want to have to play them twice (I could also have played them from the CoH menu directly). Not because the game is not good, but because I have enough games in my backlog.

Vito

Ah, I see, makes sense that they do not fit as well after all. Even better, because playing them means actually shrinking your backlog numbers ;)

samwise84

Yes. My thoughts exactly 😅

BigBlueWolf

Have you read the “Fables” graphic novel series? I completed the entire thing. Highly recommended! The Farm isn’t a bad place and encompasses quite a bit more land than Fabletown in NYC. It’s downside is living in a place where you can’t mix freely with anyone but your own kind. As it happens, the Farm is a critical refuge in many ways throughout the story for everyone, not just the non-human fables.

samwise84

No I haven’t read the graphic novel. But honestly a place that you are not allowed to leave, doesn’t matter how big or beautiful it is, is still a prison. Especially if you are send there against your own free will.
If you want to go there of your own free will then it might be a refuge, but the way it was presented in the game it was used as a punishment : You can’t hack it in the outside world to the standard we set. Off to the Farm with you.

Vito

I’d like to add that I read a few of the Fables graphic novels (yes, because of this game) and I didn’t really like them. I think the majority is with BigBlueWolf though :)

BigBlueWolf

Not sure how far you got into them, but I remember the first few were a bit slow going and scattered. The story really took off once the Adversary who controls the Fable homelands was revealed.

BigBlueWolf

Yeah I get what you’re saying. In the books though, Fabletown seems a lot more claustrophobic. The inhabitants may be free to go around NYC, but you never get the impression they want to leave the confines of Fabletown very much – exactly how the magic world of Harry Potter is free to mingle with the “muggle” world but they self-isolate in these magically hidden areas and only use the non-magic world to travel between those points. Fabletown is like a city-block sized version of Daigon Alley. The Farm is more like the Weasleys’ home in the countryside. Except with the latter there isn’t any worry about prying eyes and needing the wipe memories of any “mundie” who sees too much. But neither is really “free” in the true sense of the word.

Garcias

Glad to know you were able to finish these 3 games in August! Appears to have been a great month overall.
Personally, Wolf Among Us is my favorite Telltale game but there are a few that I have not played it (anything post Tales from the Borderlands, included).
Thank you for the shoutout as well. Happy to know I helped someone else cleaning a bit of the mighty backlog! :D

samwise84

Yes it was. But then I had 2 1/2 weeks of vacation time so no wonder I could get some backlog sorted out :)

I like all three of the telltale games i played so far.

And you are welcome. You brought that game back on my radar and I greatly enjoyed it :)
