Overall, I was impressed with this game. It’s consistant with the writing and stuck with it’s theme what those who lost their parents are left with, and how powerful that motivation can drive them. As a fan of Batman, I was mildly impressed by recreating interesting characters, while still pulling twists. However, perhaps it’s because it’s a Telltale game (choose your dialogue), but Bruce Wayne didn’t quite feel like Bruce Wayne. Just slightly off and closer to Rhys (Tales of the Borderlands, half-confident)

Normally, I am into weird quirky games with odd mechanics (Deadly Premonitions, Killer 7, etc.), but this one is an exception. This just felt a terrible game all around that could have almost been good. Like if M. Night Shyamalan made a game. It’s story is bizarre, forced interests, and very much inconsistent. The gameplay is horrid as it the main meat of the game is a quick time events with a “Simon Says” aesthetic, with some alternating mashing of buttons, and small cases of investigating. I probably could have enjoyed this more if they cut all of the gameplay out of it and just made it straight into a movie.

Recommend? Nope, not looking forward to what other surprises David Cage (Director) has to offer)

Oh, FMV. Your charm is all to effective with me. This game is actually a part of an older Tex Murphy series that had Noir and FMV as their main tags. Despite being connected to previous entries, it doesn’t require any knowledge of them to understand the current narrative. The game itself is the standard detective game (find clues, use them to solve puzzles, question suspects/witnesses), but the real charm comes from the noir set in a future setting and more importantly from the actors themselves. As many FMV games go, the quality of acting can be all over the place. In that way it is kind of why I like it, but also for those whose acting just works. In particular Tex’s (main character) interactions and lines are done well and is a person you want to hear what they say or do in response to others.
    Recommend? Yes. Must love FMV.

    Hypership Out of Control

    Hypership Out of Control

    74 minutes playtime

Your ship won’t stop accelerating and is out of control. You must shoot obstacles and enemies out of your way to stop yourself from crashing or it’s game over. The game is simple and easy to understand while providing challenging modes and later difficulties. Overall, nothing to special other than a quick time killer.
    Recommend? Yeah, I guess.

    Knee Deep

    Knee Deep

    3 hours playtime

Just want to start out that I experienced this game through VR, and so may differ from the non-VR version.
Play three different characters as you find information and choose your way to report it. Your dialogue and reports effect those you meet later on.
Having to decide styles of reporting (each character embodies a different form of reporting blogging, newspaper articles, and insurance claims) each style being cautious, edgy, and inflammatory. Each one determines the severity of social casualties to those around you and whether your boss is happy with your article or not. These decisions kind of felt to be a pain, and just wanted to near the end of what it was building up to. When you finally reach the end I could only say “That’s it?” as there didn’t feel to be any resolution and wanted to know what happened after the events.
As far as VR goes setting up the game as a play was interesting a good way to go about it, but also done unwell. There were times where dialogue choices hid behind obstacles, the camera would have trouble getting to the correct point of focus, and the characters will experience a similar issue where they can end up walking in circles (sometimes through objects) instead of going on their designed paths.

Doom II is easily my favorite of the early Doom series, so when I found a new level pack in my library I was excited and expected more greatness. That didn’t quite pan out as I found most of the levels to be too big, confusing, and just generally unenjoyable.
    Recommend? Not really…

    POSTAL 2

    POSTAL 2

    10 hours playtime

Postal 2 generally fixed what I didn’t like about the first. The second game is far more comical and gives a better escape feeling than the first. The gameplay becoming first person and offering more interesting interactions just increased the quality tenfold. It still offers a bit of a messed up premise, but all in all a game is a game and does it the best way it can.
Recommend? Yes, just be okay with violence.

    Rivals of Aether

    Rivals of Aether

    3 hours playtime

A mix between Super Smash Bros mechanics, a Street Fighter feel, and Mega Man styled characters/surroundings. It doesn’t’ particularly do all well and one of its main mechanics where parrying will cause the opponent to be stunned and will almost always cost them a life felt too easy to do and thus frustrating. The stories that follow each character also felt very bare, and had you do fights in between sentences of conversation where no fight would have happened up until you face the final fight, your rival.
Recommend? Maybe, but signs point to no.

    Stardew Valley

    Stardew Valley

    84 hours playtime

The palate cleanser of my library as of late. Something about getting to escape real life being able to complete goals that roll into each day, whether it be farming, mining, slaying monsters, fishing, or just giving gifts and talking to your neighbors. Things I wouldn’t normally want to do in real life, but somehow satisfying in the virtual world. Though the game never truly ends, you do get to reach milestones and a sort of ultimate milestone to test how many accomplishments you can achieve.
Recommend? So much yes, Even as a person who wouldn’t normally be into this sort of chill sort of game.

It’s writing with the writing

Wait… did I read that right? :D

Bangledeschler

a ha ha.. ha… yeah I have been pretty tired as of late, so I’m not really surprised my reviews are a little subpar let alone making a mistake in my reviews. Why I skipped on my usually tagline and introductory paragraph.
“It’s consistent with the writing”, is probably what I meant or something along those lines.
Ugh I need more sleep -_-‘
or more coffee… one or the other.

Amitte

Now that makes sense :D Get some sleep! Don’t let your dreams (of good sleep) be dreams! (Geddit?)

Bangledeschler

Certainly will try, but sleep is the most challenging game. Oh I get it ^_^ now if only I could just do it. :3

Amitte

Oh no… are you perhaps of the insomniac kind? :(

Bangledeschler

Of the kind. Usually my chaotic schedule is to blame, but doesn’t explain it when I am more free. C’est la vie. copyofacopy

Amitte

I’m convinced insomnia is different than staying up of your own free will, but then again, c’est la vie indeed. And a que sera, sera too.

Bangledeschler

I agree, my point was rather my chaotic schedule is causing me stress and a mess of other things that make it so I am only able to stare at the ceiling for hours wonderong why I can’t sleep for the few hours of free rhat I have. But, I apologize, I do not mean to talk about my negatives to others. Thank you for the chat, and hope you have a well time for the remainder of the year. ^_^

Amitte

Well, um… thank you as well! And likewise, likewise ^^

JaffaCaffa

Did you play the newest update of Stardew? Had you played it before then? I just found out about it the past week, am intrigued to see just how different things are. I already maxed out the hearts of nearly everyone (besides 2 “weird” characters), so new events etc are always welcomed!

Bangledeschler

I did NOT! I had finished the day before the update and was super confused the the big update that came out of nowhere. I’m pretty excited to check out all the new quality of life changes and of course all the new events that are waiting for me. Weird characters, ey? Have a couple ideas who they might be, but pretty sure I am wrong.
Though at the moment I am on a break for Stardew Valley, a mix between too tired and had binged it a little bit in my final week. Largely because I knew I was close to the “end” and curious to see the rating I got.

JaffaCaffa

Sandy and Krobus are both halfway but kept forgetting to go outta my way to give gifts. :P All the rest I had maxed by the first autumn!
Yeah I feel you. I got pretty far but got Stardew’d out, as it is quite the bingeable game. At least there’s more treats in store for us when we get back to it. I’ve yet to check out any of the unique map layouts either, I just don’t wanna start from scratch again after being in the midst of reorganising everything. So many creative ideas in my mind but actually bringing it to fruition….welp.

Happy holidays, enjoy whatever games you manage to squeeze in before the new year!

Bangledeschler

Happy holidays to you as well, wish you luck in your new games, and your future creative prospects! ^_^

Fahrenheit is one of those universally acknowledged cases of story completely jumping the shark as it goes from a really strong opening into some weird story directions. Also, I found cutscenes great, but like with all QTEs you’re standing at the input section rather than marveling the cutscene itself. Part when Lucas escapes from the police always stuck with me because it’s a great OH SHIT sequence.

Nope, not looking forward to what other surprises David Cage (Director) has to offer)

Hehehe. I still think he peaked with Omikron. Sadly it’s largely a forgotten gem.

Bangledeschler

That’s a pretty good description of how I felt as well. It really did start out strong, and there were some strong areas… then it just fumbles and scatters everywhere. Just as you say, I would start getting into the cut scene, controller slightly off to the side, next thing I know I am scrambling to grab it as I now have to focus on two sets of directional colors rather than look at what’s actually happening. After a few times I learned my lesson and kept both hands on the controller just looking for the next QTE.

Omikron… gives me a little bit of anxiety. I have heard it is a hodge podge of genres, and doesn’t really do any of them great. Of course this is second hand information/opinions. I’m sure I will find it somewhere (I want to believe David Cage can redeem himself in my eyes)… ya know eventually… when I get around to it.

Arbiter Libera

I’m not sure if the game was under development when a writers strike happened so that impacted it or it could’ve been Cage himself. It says something about a creator when he has to put himself in the tutorial to explain how controls work.

Bereft of nostalgic notions I’d say you’re probably correct in your expectations. Omikron is definitely aged at this point and not to mention it didn’t exactly excel at any single thing it did. Game was a melting point of ideas you’d basically never got today along with pretty interesting premise.
