Completion Report #3 - Dear Esther

Dear Esther: Landmark Edition

Dear Esther: Landmark Edition

2 hours playtime

I couldn’t start the week better, then playing a long-waited game of mine :-D ! And well… it wasn’t that good as I expected…
If we look at this game in a bit different aspect, we could say that Dear Esther is the granddad of walking simulators. I wouldn’t even say that this is a game, because there is no real interaction, more like a gamified narrative story.
The story isn’t really simple, or it wasn’t for me: to be honest I looked it on internet, and there are theories, but now real description what was the game about.
Briefly, we walk across this gorgeous island, and listen to a Narrator, he explains a lot of things about himself and the people across him. The scenery is well made, but for me the story was a bit hard to understand. Of course, this could be because I’m not a native English speaker, but as I see many people don’t really know what was the game about.

If you like the genre, I think go and pick up again What Remains of Edith Finch, Firewatch or my personal favorite: The Vanishing of Ethan Carter (oh man, I should replay that).
I didn’t really enjoyed the game, I’ll play it again today with Director’s Commentary (for the achievement), I hope I’ll understand it a bit better :D

UPDATE, as of 17th of March:
OK, my opinion has changed a bit. After I played through I went to the net and found that somebody made Hungarian language into the game, but sadly only for the first version. After some trying, I was able to convert all the text on this version, so I played though the game again, and now I understand it.
It is a really, really sad and emotional journey, but I still think that this isn’t a game, more like a narrative story. But, the story is quite hard, even when I understand everything, the game makes everything harder… This is because the game uses a random system, so most of the object appear on random spots, and most of the dialogue will appear at random order.
Hovewer, if you like walking simulators, give it a try. For me, the language was a bit hard to understand, but overall nice game :-)

Wish you all a good week ^^!
