Iron Knights: Hollow Commando

Wow, it has been a month since the last update, mainly because I focused on beating Hollow Knight and totally not because I got distracted with other stuff

I usually tend to avoid famous and/or mainstream games because they tend to be a bit overhyped or they don’t live up to my expectations, but this one surprised me in a good way. It’s a very good metroidvania with a really nice artstyle and a solid gameplay. One of the things I liked is how non-linear the game is. After a certain point in the game (once you reach the Resting Grounds) you can go to each place in the order you want, or just skip a good chunk of the story and go straight to the final boss if you feel like it (I don’t recommend this).
Another thing I appreciated is how different each boss fight is, with the Nightmare King Grimm being my favourite one (its kickass track may or may not have helped =P). He may have been hard as fuck (I died within 20 seconds in my first try xD) but fighting him was really fun.
All in all you guys should give this game a go. It’s quite long but it’s definitely worth your time

I also played Iron Commando since I’m a big fan of beat em’ up games, but all I got was utter disappointment. I know it was a port of a SNES game but they could have ironed it a bit more. For starters the game is unfairly hard, the enemies always have more range than you so you’ll have a hard time hitting them (or you can just spam jump+kick and wish for the best) and more often than not you’ll be pummeled to death, even on easy.
Also you can’t configure the key mapping in game and you have to do it through a menu of sorts which appears when playing in window mode.
I don’t know if the game had more issues later on, but after constantly trying and getting frustrated I ended up abandoning the game.

My first time fighting the Nightmare King Grimm was similar, I didn’t even know what happened. XD Also I sometimes got so catched by his track that I forgot the steps and got quickly beaten. X) Same problem I have with Pure Vessel, he has amazing track and fight, it’s so hard to concentrate…
Do you plan on replaying Hollow Knight again soon? And what about Pantheons? ;)
By the way, I love Hollow Knight! Amazing game. <3

I will eventually replay it since I left a few things undone (like some dream bosses, the delicate flower sidequest (which I’m so not looking forward to do it…), and the last challenge in the coliseum of fools) and got the normal ending.
Funnily enough when I managed to beat him the rest of the monsters and the final boss felt insanely slow, since I went from having to react in a split second to having some time to think before acting. It felt kinda weird tbh

Kyrrelin

I am still playing it myself. ;D
The Delicate flower quest isn’t that hard as it seems like, when you will be closing to the last point just be calm and take deep breaths. ;)
But that’s with everything, as you are getting better they seem to be more slower. First time fighting with Soul Master was hell, after Soul Tyrant he was easy peasy. XD But no matter how many times I fight for example with Lost Kin or Hornet Sentinel I find it hard to keep up with them. ;)
The battle with Hollow Knight was so heavy and emotionally powerful, most of the times I just watched him and couldn’t bear myself to beat him. <3
Maybe little spoiler. o.o And I believe that after you meet the last boss you will wish to have some time to think. ;)

I saw some videos of that boss because the whole argument about whether them or the Nightmare King Grimm was harder, and the fact they remain static in the air favours my playing style (Abyss Shriek spamming) quite a bit. Whether I’d be able to remain calm when I see the whole screen full of flying swords and lasers is a different matter though xD

I get where you’re coming from about the higher expectations of games with such a positive reputation, but I still think they’re totally worth checking out to see how your opinion fits, rarely do I get disappointed, often they have such glowing reviews for a reason! Hollow Knight was really enjoyable for me too, I agree about its soundtrack being a particular highlight. How did you get on with the White Palace?

Nicknames

I didn’t get to the White Palace in this playthrough since I didn’t collect enough essence and getting the normal ending was enough for me. I plan to get on it (as well as the rest of stuff I left pending) once I have a bit more free time

Joe

Ah fair enough, it was the one of the hardest parts for me but the music eased a lot of the platforming frustration lol.
