Report #12: February 2021

I was pleasantly surprised to manage to knock three titles off the backlog in February, including two that had been there for a long time and one that had been there for a looong time: Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.I wouldn’t say it looks fresh, but it probably has about the level of 3D graphics that I find acceptable to play today. The story is nice and straightforward, and the banter between the prince and his romantic interest is enjoyable. The game is split 50-50 between combat and action puzzles as you traverse the huge palace of some sultan. Combat is pretty simple and occasionally challenging, but the game is not much of a puzzler, as the solutions are always pretty obvious - it’s mostly a question of pressing the right button at the right time.

I’m not familiar with the Walking Dead graphic series, but Telltale’s game series and the TV show make me feel the same thing: I don’t like to be manipulated. Over and over, the game moves to make you care about a character, only to have them killed an episode or two later. Or worse, it puts you in front of a cringey timed choice “Which one of your friends will survive!” What the game has going for it, though, is Clementine. She is a great character with a nice development arc (at least, two seasons in), to the point that I’m actually looking forward to playing the following seasons, despite everything else…

I also finally finished TASTEE, where I sort of got stuck halfway through about a year ago. Up to that point I had been playing my missions slow and methodically, which the game mechanics actually disfavor. When I turned to using speed and distractions I had a much better success rate.

This month I will participate in the “Monthly in a Month” event again, after a few months off. Stay slaying, assassins!
