Report #42

Happy New Year! May your wishes come true and your backlog shrink :)

Some short reviews from me for two short (and not so great…) games.

Reviews

STAR WARS™ Starfighter™

Released in 2001, this game is set in the wake of the Battle of Naboo. You fly different fighter craft, trying to fight the droid armies.

The best thing about the game is that it's short. The graphics aged really badly, but story and gameplay wise it wasn't too great either. I think it might have been an okay game in 2001, but I wouldn't recommend it now.

STAR WARS™: The Clone Wars - Republic Heroes™

6.7 hours, no achievements
★★☆☆☆

Another Star Wars game! Released in 2009, the game follows the heroes of the "The Clone Wars" show between the first two seasons. It basically plays like a LEGO game, except that there is no need to replay levels later on.

Honestly, this game might be quite okay, wouldn't it be for the abysmal controls. So if you can handle missing some jumps because of the unprecise controls, then you might have some fun hours with the game. But overall I wouldn't recommend it.

Currently playing

  • Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag
    Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag

I didn’t make any progress with Fallout Tactics :( I’m stuck in a really unfun mission.

AC IV on the other hand is fun to play!

Goals

Let’s talk about gaming goals. I had three in 2019:

  1. Get my unfinished games down to 80. I’m at 70 right now, so I more than reached my goal. I’m really happy about it :)
  2. Get my Steam AGC to 75%. I’m at 73% now, so I did not reach that goal. I’m okay with it though. It would have meant spending too much time focusing on achievements.
  3. Beat 75% of the games I add in 2019. I only added “Dex” (thanks again kubikill), which I completed. Some other games have been added automatically for me though (Destiny 2 e.g.), so depending your point of view I either reached or not reached this goal. I count it as reached.

Overall I’m quite satisfied with my progress. Looking at 2020, I’m not sure which goals I want to achieve yet. I think I’ll go with the following two for the moment:

  • A. Again, beat or complete 75% of my games I add in 2020. And this time I definitely only mean games that I actively add or buy.
  • B. Get my Completed plus Beaten categories to a combined 50% of my backlog. I’m at 43% at the moment. As of now, this goal would require beating 26 games in 2020, which should be doable, albeit not overly easy. A lot of my backlogged games are on the longer side and maybe I’ll add a few more new games this year, so it might prove more challenging than it sounds right now. But I think this would be a fitting goal for the year and a huge symbolic victory in reducing my backlog.

Thanks for reading this and I apologize for my lack of comments in the last few weeks. Keep up the great posts in 2020 y’all and I’m looking forward to reading them :)

Happy backlog-clearing to everyone,
Vito

Did you tackle any legendary ships yet? I liked the game as well, but kinda got tired from gathering all the resources for upgrades at some point.

No, I haven’t tackled any of those yet. I still lack some upgrades, partly because gathering the resources is tiring, just as you mentioned.

Thanks for making Terry wish me good luck. Now I cannot fail!

Kyrrelin

Good luck with your goals! I think it depends mostly on the games you choose, so don’t pick majority of games that would be too long and you would be safe. ;)

I should really start playing Assassin more, I am soooo tempted!! X)

Haha, I often think the same thing when reading through the reviews of others. “I should play this” or “I should play that”. Unfortunately there is never enough time :D

JumpOffACliffy

You only added ONE game to your backlog in a whole year??

Is it possible to learn this power?

Vito

Yeah, great achievement in itself. I have a lot of unactivated keys though, so my hidden backlog is bigger.

I would teach you, but the path to enlightenment is different for everyone ;)

JumpOffACliffy

Hmm hidden keys… interesting ;)

For me half the fun was seeking out deals for games that I might possibly enjoy playing one day, so… 🤷

misterhaan

pretty sure star wars starfighter was the only game for n64 i got rid of. i agree black flag was mostly fun — i completed the story even after i reinstalled my operating system and then found out ubisoft had turned of cloud saves for black flag so lost about 40 hours of progress…

Vito

Wow, loosing 40 hours of progress is harsh…I don’t think I’d have the patience to replay 40 hours!
