2019-04 Report

Continuing my challenge to beat / complete at least 5 games each month this year, April was another success!

Last Month

Some great games here! I really enjoyed all of them. Door Kickers, Infinifactory and iBomber Defense Pacific are so hard! There were some levels that took me literally hours to solve in each of them, but it was so satisfying when I finally solved them.

Enhanced BLAEO Update

If you’re not aware, I have a script that helps generating posts like this (the game boxes above were generated by it):

I’ve released an update today that allows you to customize the playtime template and include a “playtime this month” stat, just like I have above.

Cleaning House

In my early Steam years, I would add any game that was temporarily free to my library, without checking its quality or if it was a genre that I would enjoy. So this month I decided to reduce my backlog by permanently removing those games. I’ve also won a lot of crap on SteamGifts (because, similarly, I used to enter every single giveaway I could in my early SteamGifts years), but I don’t think it would be right to remove them (and I’m pretty sure I would be suspended if I did that), so I made sure to only remove games that I didn’t win on SteamGifts.

Here’s the full list of games I removed:

  • Bionic Dues
  • Blaster Shooter GunGuy!
  • Block N Load
  • Blockstorm
  • Cult Of The Wind
  • Dead Bits
  • East India Company Gold
  • Enclave
  • Epigenesis
  • Eurofighter Typhoon
  • Glacier 3: The Meltdown
  • Hostile Waters: Antaeus Rising
  • Humanity Asset
  • Hyper Fighters
  • Ionball 2: Ionstorm
  • Keen Dreams
  • Knights And Merchants
  • Legendary
  • Maui
  • Miner Meltdown
  • Minion Masters
  • Nux
  • Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee
  • Overcast: Walden And The Werewolf
  • Overture
  • Pixel Puzzles Japan
  • Pixel Puzzles Ultimate
  • Pixel Space
  • Planetary Annihilation
  • Quick Slick Deadly
  • Racer 8
  • Realms Of The Haunting
  • Relic Hunters Zero
  • Rush Bros.
  • Ruzh Delta Z
  • Shot In The Dark
  • Steel & Steam: Episode 1
  • Talisman: Prologue
  • TeraBlaster
  • The Blue Flamingo
  • The Culling Of The Cows
  • The Next Door
  • Time Gentlemen, Please

Most of the games on this list have mixed to negative reviews, and the ones that don’t are usually RPG or multiplayer (genres that I’m not very fond of), but if you feel like I made a big mistake and some of these games are actually good, please let me know and I’ll consider restoring them. But for now, they’re off my backlog for good!

What’s Next?

These are the main tasks that I’m focused in for this month:

  • Beat something from the monthly theme succeeded last month
  • Beat Hektor (and maybe complete)
  • Beat Luxor HD (and maybe complete) failed last month
  • Beat Luxor 2 HD (and maybe complete) failed last month
  • Beat Rise Of The Tomb Raider (and maybe complete) failed last month
  • Complete Dying Light (previously beaten) failed last month
  • Complete Grand Theft Auto IV (previously beaten) failed last month
  • Complete Jotun (previously beaten) failed last month
  • Complete Outlast (previously beaten) failed last month
  • Complete Pinstripe (previously beaten) failed last month

Nostalgia speaking, but Enclave is IMO pretty good and very simple TPP hack’n’slash, not really an RPG. I used to play a lot and completed it several times :D But it’s been soooooo long since I played it…IMO restore it and give it a try :P

Noted, will see if I can give it a chance then. :)

Congrats on completing Door Kickers! I really enjoyed it, but it became a massive grind towards the end. After 40 hours of playtime, I gave up with 40/43 achievements completed. Oh well!

The only achievement that really annoyed me was the one to unlock all weapons, because I got the others naturally just by completing all single player / campaign missions with 3 stars. After I completed everything, I was still missing a ton of stars to unlock all weapons, so I had to keep replaying a custom mission to get those stars, and that was indeed a grind.

Oh interesting - for me the stars were super easy and I got them quickly. The bigger grind was farming (killhouse) missions to max out the troopers. I’m pretty sure you earn stars as you go (unless they changed that or I got my stars elsewhere - was a while ago!)

The achievements I skipped were earn 1, 2 and 3 stars on every mission. Some missions are so difficult to even complete, let alone 3-star, that I just gave up :P

Enough to unlock all weapons? Because I got 3 stars on every mission and I still didn’t have enough stars to unlock all weapons. I actually maxed out my troopers quickly just by getting 3 stars on every mission and rotating my squad, so I didn’t need to farm that.

There are many strategies you can use to make the difficult missions easier. Equipping the right gun / item for the mission is also essential.

Bruhh I don’t know what happened on your playthrough :P While I don’t exactly know how many stars are available - I probably had to grind a few to be able to unlock all the weapons etc, it was nothing compared to the trooper levels. UGH. I would’ve spent hours in the custom/killhouse missions getting everyone to max. Maybe the later missions (which I skipped) give huge XP and that’s why you found it so easy?? Not sure.

And yeah, it took me a while to figure out that guns do different things if you bother to read the description, not just look at the “stats” xD

Maybe. I also completed all 3 challenges for each mission (using only one soldier, not pausing and using a single plan), so that probably gave me more XP.

And maybe there were new single player / campaign missions added since you played?

Yeah, you get a decent XP bonus for each of the challenges.

And yeah, more missions and campaigns were added. That’s also part of the reason I gave up on the last 3 achievements - because I wasn’t even sure which ones were required, and which missions had been added later :P

Congrats on a great month! Door Kickers is a game I one of those games I need to go back to.

Thank you!
