September Update

Did someone say “pathetic progress”? Yeah, I just did.

Only 4 notches on the backlog slaying rifle for this month, and one of them barely qualifies. I’m not too surprised by the very little progress, as this September is Divinity: Original Sin 2 month. I backed it on Kickstarter after loving the first one and I was eagerly waiting for it. I don’t think I was that hyped for a game release in ages.
I played the first one solo and I honestly didn’t think I would enjoy co-op that much but after trying a co-op campaign with a long-time friend I did a complete 180 on that thought. I’m having an absolute blast!

It will probably take my friend and I a few more months to beat D:OS2 as we tend to be really methodical in the exploration and pretty slow at everything, I’ll try to get more backlog slaying in next month, but I can’t really promise much :3

Anyway, the good news is that the other 3 games for this month were all really enjoyable ೭੧(❛▿❛✿)੭೨

Game of Thrones - A Telltale Games Series

This was a surprise. It’s not the game I see cited whenever someone gives their “top 3 Telltale Games” list (which is almost invariably a permutation of Tales from the Borderlands - The Walking Dead S1 - The Wolf Among Us) but it really took me for a ride.

After beating it though, I have to say that I think I liked it despite it being a Telltale game. The setting, the characters and the plot were all great, but in the end it feels really crippled by the usual “almost none of your choices really matter” curse that plagues games from TT.

In short: bad Telltale game but holy cat the setting is great. I think I might start the TV series soon :p

Sonic Mania

I know it sounds a little broken-record-ish by this point as so many other people have said it, but Sonic Mania is really the game that original Sonic fans have been waiting for ages. While playing I am 100% sure I’ve worn a wide grin on my face multiple times whenever something made me think “oooh that’s clever!”.

The only gripe I had with the game was the 10 minutes time limit.
I get the whole “gotta go fast” thing the series is based on but it feels really counter-intuitive in a game with much bigger and expansive levels like Sonic Mania. I think they could have just removed it completely or at least bumped it up a little, or maybe kept it only for boss fights.
It’s not a huge deal but I’ve triggered it twice, and it was infuriating (╯ರ ~ ರ)╯︵ ┻━┻

I’m terrible at the minigames so I’ve only unlocked the “bad end” and barely anything else, so I think will go back to it “on and off” in the next few months and unlock the true end, or try out playthroughs with Tails or & Knuckles

Evening Surprise

This was an easy 100% to add to the collection (I’m not going back to that addiction, I promise ^^). The game is based on one joke and it gets it out of the way pretty quickly, clocking at around 10 minutes for every possible “path”. Very little to add, it’s entirely based on a misconception that is revealed for what it is at the end but at least it doesn’t drag it out for long.

Machinarium

This would have been a pretty run-of-the-mill point and click game without the outstanding presentation. The game manages to introduce a cast of characters and a world full of personality without a single word written or spoken, just using its art, animation and music.

Wow, you really think it might turn into a tv series! I need keep an eye open for it then.
Also I agree that TT suffers from choices that don’t have a super deep impact on the tale itself.

Kaleith

I meant the Game of Thrones tv series, which has been going on for over 6 seasons now ^^

CleaningSimp twitter

It’s not bad. 2 big games:). And Divinity 2 looks awesome.

I am surprised that you liked Game of Thrones despite not having watched the TV series. A lot of the enjoyment from the game, I found, was knowing the TV series story, and when the game happened in that timeline, along with the voice acting done by the actors!! Even despite all that, Game of Thrones is really not one of my favorite TT, but I found it okay. Please watch the series!

Kaleith

It was mostly the characters and the political intrigue (is that the word? >_>) that kept me interested, so I have no doubt that I would like the show. It will just take a while for me to start, I’m not that much into tv series and it’s hard for me to start a new one

EvilBlackSheep

Congrats on the progress, Divinity is pretty huge, hence a time sucker. Glad you liked Machinarium, it’s such a cute game :3 (As all Amanita Design’s games, let’s be honest)

Kaleith

I was pretty much giggling non-stop at the animations in Machinarium ^^

EvilBlackSheep

You need to play Botanicula if you haven’t. The animations and the sounds are soooo cute.

Kaleith

Added to the list, although I don’t really know when I’ll get back to it

Mully

machinarium is one of the first point and click games i played on steam (got it years ago on release) i might play it again soon <3

Kaleith

They started updating it again out of nowhere, they even added support for higher definitions. It has never looked better ^^
