Beaten in May

I’m here just for a couple of days but I want to share with you my thoughs about games I’ve beaten in last month.

Wow. I knew this game was good but I didn’t expect it is still so good after 15 years. Of course gameplay is a little archaic, but the scale of the game, the diversity of mechanics, the mood. Every time I was starting to get a bit bored, something new happened - cars, boats, teamwork, new enemies… Even graphics aren’t so bad if you remember about it’s age. The difficulty level was perfect - hard enough to get me killed a lot of times, but I didn’t get stuck anywhere. The only moments I had issues with it was when I got lost and didn’t know where to go - fully expected problems with old level design. I had a blast. So… anyone heard about Half Life 3? :D

Suprisingly nice little platformer. Very easy, but with a heart. Tone of things to do (I mean - really. There was moment in the game when I thought “Stop giving me new things and levels - I didn’t check the old ones!”). The only problem I had was with graphic. Technically - it was simple, but clean and nice, but design of characters, enemies and levels was sooo standard and boring. There was nothing memorable about them, which is kinda shame. The only interesting thing was the main hub, which was a balloon in the sky, with more and more others balloons as you progressed. It looked cool. Beside that - I really recommend it. Just don’t expect a challenge.

What a cool concept for a game. This is the first time I felt like playing a real detective. You have to find clues and connect them by yourself, without (almost) any help from the game. The gameplay is simple - you are on the ghost ship, you need to find out what happened with the crew. There are tone of bodies, and for every one of them you can see a moment of death in a flashback. That’s all - you are watching those flashbacks, listening to dialogs, and trying to guessed who were those people and how did they die. Some of the riddles are insanely hard, and you need to guess all of them to get the best ending. I used a guide, because I didn’t have patient to literally compare socks of all the crew to find out who was where. Nevertheless - awesome concept and very good execution.

You need to play Jedi Outcast if you haven’t already. It’s a game that expects you to look for air ducts and conventionally opened tunnels in fallen debris to progress simply because it wasn’t built with setpiece after setpiece kind of narrative design that leads the player naturally. Speaking of HL2, did you enjoy the bridge catwalk section? In a modern game you would not be allowed to fall from there, let alone having to actually be careful navigating over it. :P

I have played only Jedi Academy but I didn’t finish it - it kicked my butt :) . I didn’t have much problems with bridge - I fell a couple of times, but thanks to saving often it wasn’t a big deal. It remind me a lot of bridge section in Dishonored - I think they got inspired by HL2. The biggest suprise for me was that I need to go back the same way - no shortcut for road back? That’s oldschool :D .
