Monthly Update #18: October 2020

SPOOKtober and the month of participating in events

I was pretty keen this month, with a heap of completions/beaten games, and minimal backlog additions! I MUST BE SICK.

Anyway, this month I particpated in PAGYWOSG, Monthly in a Month and the Monthly theme on Backlog Assassin's. Helped narrow down my backlog to some horror games I have been avoiding. (I'm generally not a fan of horror, surprise!)

Interesting plot twists that went nowhere.. uhh
Screenshots are spoiler-y (Sorry ninglor!)

Half-Life 2

Ghost Files: The Face of Guilt

So many instances you can see of other solutions to problems that don't work in this HOG.
Character does some questionable things…
Entirely forgettable game.

I finally got the last achievement - I started this January 2019, and gave up on the last achievement. Been slowly working on it the last few months!

Half-Life 2

Portal Knights

36.9 hours
23 of 40 achievements

Fun game - reminds me a bit of Staxel, but with combat and boss fights.

I can't 100% it at the moment as it requires the DLC (which I don't have)… and a heap of grind to finish the events and level another character to 30 (with the DLC haha). It was fun, but I think it would be more fun to play multiplayer.

Half-Life 2

Book of Demons

Won on SG

Really enjoyed my time in this game. Originally started for both PAGYWOS and for Monthly in a Month challenges.

Once I beat the final boss in my run however I decided that was enough for me as there was SO much clicking (I can see this game giving someone Carpal Tunnel!).

I'd be interested in replaying it as other professions at a later time. I recommend the game as a short session game, similar to Slay the Spire if you could set small 10 minute sessions in that :P

Half-Life 2

Call of Cthulhu

9.2 hours
35 of 49 achievements

I managed to get 3 out of 4 endings in the one play-through.
Not really sure if I can be bothered to replay for the achievements I missed and the last ending. No chapter select :(

I did run into some bugs, such as mouse click not working when trying to select answers.
Graphics in cutscenes were pretty bad - somehow looked really low resolution?

Otherwise the game felt similar to a HOG when investigating, but playing Layers of Fear after this there were definitely some similarities in parts.
I died a fair few times to the monster and nearly quit because I hate scary sections lol. I persevered though as it's SPOOKTOBER. (The monster managed to find me a lot when I ran into the cupboard haha - this part felt like Alien: Isolation, which I dropped in under 2 hours due to how terrifying it is). It also has an asylum part, and I usually hate the cliche of an asylum in media. (Nearly every supernatural style show has to have an asylum episode..)

I did enjoy this game though, which I didn't think I would even though I wanted to try it!

Half-Life 2

Layers of Fear

This game was a lot quicker to play than I thought it would be. Haunted house with haunted paintings. Was a lot less scarier than I thought it would be too, but then having just finished Call of Cthulhu where I died multiple times to a Monster coming out of a painting, paintings in this game felt less terrifying.

Not sure what happened achievement wise and how note-reading etc is activated, seeing as I collected most the items. Oh well.

The game was well done, and the way corridors/scary things etc seemed to switch/jump around was seamless!

Story spoilers (kinda): I managed to get the Self-Portrait ending, realised there were different endings looking it up after!

Staxel

So uuuh Staxel released new achievements. TIME TO TRY RE-100%! 30 hours logged this month :0 I had to restart the game as it doesn't have cloud saves, so my previous saves with all the quests up to date/villagers friended needed to be redone to reach the new quest line…

And of course my destructive tendencies caused a game breaking bug (on the new island I managed to destroy something that advances a quest. I can't replace it currently…). Luckily the dev reads the forums so they are working on a fix. Until then.. I can't go any further.

Issue after issue haha. Luckily I enjoy creating random buildings to waste time between days I couldn't do anything :P

2 of the new achievements done at least?

Gifts

Friend gifted me Little Witch Nobeta and Radical Relocation for my birthday this month! I also didn't buy a single bundle/game this month, which is a record haha

  • Radical Relocation

  • DISTRAINT 2

So many games done! I’m proud of you!

Also I’m also thinking to re-build some of the half-assed buildings in Staxel from my previous playthrough. I made 1-2 buildings really nice, but the others are essentially wooden walls without any flooring or roofs lol. I think I’ll get to it (if I need more time in game to get the achievements) after finish the house for Tomti.

Also… only 4 additions! Insane month!

Haha thanks!

I find doing the roof boring on my buildings.. so many half finished buildings with half a roof hahahaha. The rest is fun though!

Yes ikr! We will see how this month goes. Depends on what bundles are out :P

Yeah the roof is really boring… I wish there was an easy way to do that.

Well… on one hand I want some nice good bundles, on the other… poor other people :P
