ASSASSINATION REPORT #12: ADVENTURE TIME

Hello fellow assassins! I hope your summer vacation is going really well! This last 2 months I’ve been playing a lot of adventures, so let’s bring it on with the small reviews.

Broken Sword: shadow of the templars: This is one of the best classic adventure games. Period. Characters are charismatic, story is engaging and there is little “moon logic” within it, so most of the puzzles actually make sense. A must play for all adventure lovers.

RECOMMENDED TO KILL: YES

Broken Sword 2: the smoking mirror: George and Nico story continues here, and while I feel the game is almost as good as the first one, story felt a bit weaker. Not much to add to this review, it’s still an amazing game. I will surely play BS3 as soon as possible.

Return to mysterious island: I love Jules Verne, so I wanted to like this game. But I couldn’t. It reminded Myst for me, and I hate Myst for some reason. Add to that a very clunky interface and inventory, in which you can manage to have 50 items at once, and a poorly designed scenery navigation system, and you get an adventure I did not enjoy playing. Second part went inmediately to “Won’t play” section, unfortunately.

The last Door Season 2: I loved the setting, the main character, the puzzles, the atmosphere… But the story is indeed a bit weaker than in season 1. If you liked the first one, this is a must, since it’s still a fabulous game and it closes the story.

RECOMMENDED TO KILL: YES

Deponia Doomsday: …………………. I hated this game. I hated it so much that I couldn’t bare myself to finishing it, even with a walkthrough, even just to see the end after the other games. I liked first Deponia game, barely enjoyed the second one and loathed the third. But this was too much. For those who didn’t play any Deponia games yet, beware of this serie’s offensive humour, since it gets gradually more sexist, racist and overall offensive in a not funny way with each passing game. Add to that an humongous quantity of moon logic, and timed/time travelling puzzles in the last installment. I loved other games from Daedalic, but this made me angry at them, and I don’t think I will play any other of their games anytime soon. I regret engaging in this series at all.

RECOMMENDED TO GET: GODS, NO!
RECOMMENDED TO KILL: THAT’S WHY WE HAVE A WON’T PLAY CATEGORY

Day of the tentacle: Amazing game! I played it so much as a child that I remembered almost all puzzles, so no challenge for me. It’s a quite fun and short adventure that I heartily recommend. A classic from golden adventure era.

And what’s next? I’m currently playing Trine: enchanted edition in coop, and I plan to play Dishonored 2 next week. It was time for a big game this time!

And that’s all from this adventuring summer! I completed some other games, but I’ll skip them for now. Have a nice time, and happy killing!

Did you play Director’s Cut of the first two Broken Swords? I did not like how they outright remove or simplify puzzles, especially the lack of death scenes. I’m not sure if some additional content that blatantly stands out was worth it.

Yes, I played the director’s cut this time, but I `played the originals years ago. I detected the simplification, especially for things like the goat puzzle (Which was probably too difficult at the time). Some additional scenes for Nico in BS1 are quite good, even if very easy. They add some background to her story, since in the original one the game was almost about George. For death scenes, I’ve always hated them in adventures games, but they manteined them in BS2, I think. I managed to die once or twice in the boat scene.

The problem with these games now is we played them so long ago that I barely remember many things, so it’s difficult to compare differences.

I think what stuck out for me was the final puzzle in BS2 with those two wheels. From what I remember it practically solves itself now.
