Update 92: July

July was a bad month for my backlog. I got far more games then I played, partly due to my birthday O_o
Guess I need to play more games in the new month.

Half-Life 2

Path of Giants

9/10
6.4 hours
17 of 17 achievements

Really liked this game. The puzzles were not too hard and not too easy. Had a lot of fun with them. Only thing that was a bit annoying was the search for the vases as some of them were hidden in the background.

Half-Life 2

Enigmatis: The Ghosts of Maple Creek

6/10
8.4 hours
11 of 11 achievements

It's an okay HOG, considering how old it is, it is good.
Things that annoyed me:

  • no fast travelling
  • HOS scenes popping up all over the place without a real reason
  • and some of the items in the HOS scenes were very hard to find
Half-Life 2

Slash It 2

7/10
6.7 hours
303 of 303 achievements

Loved this game even more than the first one. Did clean up the last of the achievements.

Half-Life 2

Costume Quest

7/10
9.7 hours
14 of 21 achievements

This one was really fun. Though some of the costumes could have better powers. There are some hard to reach places that contain important stuff and it is not really easy to find your way there. Had to use guides.

Half-Life 2

Enclave

5.5/10
8.2 hours
no achievements

This is a really old RPG that has not really aged well. The controlls are not very good and only kb+m. The difficulty is spiking between the levels without real reason. You might fly through one level and be punished in the next.

Half-Life 2

Blacksad

8/10
20.3 hours
23 of 39 achievements

Really enjoyed this game. The story was captivating. The search for the cards was annoying, especially in the timed sequences.

Half-Life 2

Book of Demons

8/10
15.4 hours
69 of 202 achievements

Really liked this game, the fighting got a bit repetetive towards the end. But it's a nice dungeon crawler with deck building and hack'n'slash elements.

Half-Life 2

The Red Strings Club

8.5/10
8.6 hours
17 of 19 achievements

A really well written Visual Novel with nice mini game elements.

I noticed you called the gameplay in Path of Giants “riddles” instead of puzzles. Does that mean the game is constantly introducing new things you need to figure out and then abandoning them for newer things? Or does the game use its gimmicks consistently and instead increase challenge through level design?

samwise84

Well you are not wrong, puzzles might fit better ( I wrote this with about 3h of sleep), though yes they introduce new elements in nearly every level that you have to use in order to figure out a solution. Basically you have 3 figures that you have to move through each level to reach certain end tiles. In order to do that you have to for example pull levers that move platforms, use the little guys as step ladder, etc
