I don’t like the the grey cold months (and horror cliché endings)

And Winter is coming -_- I’m already feeling a drop in motivation. The end of the year will get exhausting with the work coming. Well, more of a luxury problem. As for the horror cliché I will get to that later. Let’s look at the yield this time:

  • Mini Ghost

    8 hours playtime

    24 of 24 achievements

  • No More Room in Hell

    203 hours playtime

    100 of 107 achievements

  • Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition

    18 hours playtime

    30 of 30 achievements

  • Misao: Definitive Edition

    4 hours playtime

    21 of 21 achievements

Mini-Ghost: This is a short retro platformer with some light metroidvania elements. The game and map is neither overly large nor overly complex which is a good thing and was also never meant to be. You play as Ghost trying to stop the rampaging super-computer fighting hordes of enemies, finding new power-ups (or buying them). The scaling is pretty good and there are no majorly hard parts if you play the game normally. Game has some cute aesthetics and some interesting achievements. To get all achievements you need to replay the game at least three times as it will give you constraints which increase the difficulty like speedrunning the game and just using the primary weapon. Overall a nice game which made me slightly interested in the main game. Don’t think I will get that soon though (if ever). For the “modders” there is a workshop with additional maps (which I haven’t tested) and new avatars you can use instead of the protagonist sprite which is kinda fun. However, in most small games workshop is a barren wasteland even if there is content in it. For example, for Super House of the Dead Ninja I made a small map (due to an achievement I admit) which hasnt even been looked at once since its initial month. For Blocks that matters there have been 50-60 views in a span of I think over 5 years (and none in the last years). So it kind of demotivates to make content for such games which is a shame. Thanks to MrsAlwaysRight for helping me with the Trolling achievement.

No more Room in Hell: Waited for 1.10 to drop and it finally came. So i got back into the game to get some more achievements which has been halfway sucessful. Game itself is a first person zombie survival game in source engine which a more thourough emphasis on melee and survival. Every mistake could mean your end. One bite may infect you, one hit can make you bleed. Overall there are still many ressources on most maps (survival or objectives). But you need like 10-20 hours to get to the game and hitboxes and sometimes a bit wonky. In total, it is a good game where you actually feel the effort of teamwork although you can do a lot of the objective maps alone if you are experienced enough. As I stopped playing I had 80 of 92 achievements. Now I have 100 of 107, so that is good. There are still at least three achievements which I could get if I just would search for a competent team of three more people. But this will slowly drift again in the realm of fewer playtime. It was a nice look back.

Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition: I played the Gold Edition some longer time ago and had fun enough with the game. But I didnt think the changes for the STCE would be enough to buy the game a second time. But I got a key in a bundle and searched for a co-op game. And this was a near perfect choice. Another light metroidvania, with some nice humour. You play Juan who dies in an attempt to protect the daughter of el president in Pueblucho. Well, you fail and die. After finding the mask of the dead however, you are reborn as a luchador, fighting skeletons and cacti and more. On the way you get many wonderful special abilities giving access to new areas. Greatest selling point beside the subtle and non-subtle humour is Guacamelee’s fluid movement, be it either in combat or platforming. The special abilities fill wonderful in the overall movement and are necessary to reach various points in the game while also having their place in combat. If you have a key you should try it out, especially in local co-op. Since I don’t remember Gold edition completely I cant draw much comparison. But SCTE has at least two major regions and one new ability added, in addition to other enhancements to overall story flow. I remembered the platforming as kinda hard for the special sections. But playing this made me remember how fair they actually are. In that regard, I will most likely buy Guacamelee 2 at one point.

Misao: Definitive Edition: And here we have the Horror Game. Well, it is not really much horror. But even those horror light games often find their way in my library beside actual horror games. It is a top-down retro game made in Wolf editor. You play as Aki (or however you name the protagonist) being trapped in school with others while trying to relinquish the curse of another school member. No, this is not Corpse Party. The game is overall a bit lighter. There are many ways to die and most are rather comedic. This said, there are some more disturbing elements and those are surprisingly in the story which covers the theme of heavy “bullying” if you can still call it that. The disturbing thing here is that this theme, even in this rather extreme form is more often a theme in Japanese literature which makes me wonder of how much of this is real and an actual problem. It is hard to swallow, thinking that these things happening are really a common occurence. Another example of media where you can find this theme would be the mange Revenge Classroom, which is really hard to read just because you wish so hard that something happy happens while it is only going down the drain. I would not recommand to read this for the fainted hearted. But Misao is in the horror themed games a better entry although you have your share of death and tragic. This is mainly for one reason: the ending. In comparison to most endings (for example Mad Father from the same developer, I probably made a rant at one point on this site) it lets you go with a good feeling. And it even is the true ending. Don’t know how it is for you but many horror film/game endings have this awful tendency to make some “twist” to the ending like all are happy, all is good and BAM random bullshit. It is horribly clichéd (if you excuse the pun) and often doesnt make sense, leaving you sometimes with a sour feeling. Not that case in Misao which is a good thing. Still doesnt make up for the bullshit twist in Mad Father >.<

Well, and here it concludes. Could have made a lot more progress but I had two week vacations. And I just dont know why, I cant motivate myself for anything if I dont work. I just play the same two games over and over again. It is so frustrating. I am far more productive in my free time if I have less of it …….

Credit for finishing Guacamelee. I played it years ago and loved it, but just couldn’t do those challenge maps. I think I should try it again now that I’ve had some more practise and a decent xbox controller. On the keyboard it was just too difficult to do the combos.

First time I did the Tule tree it took me over an hour. But now playing the STCE it wasnt that hard although I had Intenso Mode which could be used to healing. I think you just have to get it done once in life and then it is somewhere stored in the brain. But I admit I never played with keyboard. Controller was something I bought very early because I came a bit from playing XBox and just like the handling for many games better.

Formidolosus

Yeah I was always one of those guys who grew up with PCs and shooter games who thought that keyboard and mouse is good enough for anything. Then I got a controller and discovered it’s actually better for just about all platform, racing, and 3rd person action games, (ala batman and assassin’s creed). Having all the action in close proximity to your fingers makes a world of difference. Since getting that I’ve managed to beat quite a few really tricky platform games I couldn’t manage before.

We don’t want winter! We should build an icy wall and keep it at bay!
Or just take holidays in the warmth and south. Or be a bear and just sleep the whole time! :)

Adelion

Yea, that should be totally forbidden by law. No temperatures below 15 °C and more sunshine >.< Sadly, we currently need more rain here in Germany -_- If I could do winter sleep I probably would do it ^^

ninglor03

Ha, ja. Rest des Jahres war ziemlich trocken hier :)
Und Winterschlaf find ich die optimale Lösung. Es lässt mich nur keiner sfz

Winter.

It’s dark outside at 16:30.

You’re sucked out of all energy to do anything, when it’s dark outside.

I love winter :ok_hand:
