Congrats. :) Did you enjoy Tragedy of Prince Rupert / Icycle: On Thin Ice? I’ve had my eye on both of these, but haven’t seen many talk about ‘em. Both have an interesting art style!

Having to constantly go back and forth in games is a surefire way of me enjoying a game much less than I would’ve otherwise. I’m the worst at getting lost in games, and when it’s a specific path you need to take to move on it’s that much more frustrating getting lost. Glad you were able to find workarounds that let you enjoy the games more. I’ve heard about Earthworm Jim of course, but didn’t realise it was a hardcore game without saves. (I guess it is old, should’ve figured. :P) That’s like 4 hours of platforming without saving, no?

Tragedy of Prince Rupert has certainly nice graphical style, but it’s quite hard shmup game. You can die pretty much in second and story is more of finding items or figuring out how to find them or animals/people or by helping them. If you want a copy to give it a try can get one from tremorgames for you. :)

Icycle: On Thin Ice was really fun game from my view, controls were tight, levels quite cool and innovative and there was stuff to upgrade on main character. Little story in there too. Surely worth while game to play.

Yes Sunless Sea has plenty of trouble with that, adding currency through file lets you enjoy more of the exploring than playing cargo simulator. o.o’ Those two would have surely taken enjoyment away without work arounds. EWJ1 did crash at last boss too and i said at that point F* IT! As last level was probably one of the worst out there! :D It has level codes when you beat level, but then sometimes it didn’t use continue for some reason and lost progress etc due that. x.x Second game was much more enjoyable to me due controls working, first just was quite tedious due controls lagging behind or not working as i hoped. Yeah old games tend to have boons like these. o.o’ Guess if one is really good and can handle those controls along with knows what they are doing, game can be quite short 1-2h? But for me it took way longer for sure, 2nd i beat in 2h or so since controls were much, much better to play with! :D Quite many insta death spots on those games too and the like. :F

With the deaths in Prince Rupert do you have to restart a lot then? Do you respawn at a “beginning” location every time you die? I knew it was a lot of exploring/collecting things, but didn’t look very tough - if anything thought it looked like a pretty chill game.

Oh man crashing at the last boss…I laughed when reading that just out of “oh god” reaction I’m so sorry that’s brutal. :P Those moments that normally stay with you for years looking back at “that damn game!!!” Definitely a relief you were able to find another save. I almost never “rage” quit, but the few times I have…have been from something very similar to that happening. Just nope right on out of there. Tight controls are a huuuge factor, that’s nice that they improved on the sequel. Tbh after your experiences with the first one don’t think I would’ve tried the 2nd, but I guess it’s a good thing you gave it a shot. :) Despite all the positive hype around a bunch of old games, I’m always hesitant to try ‘em out on Steam since the ports generally seem to be pretty poor. Without having played the original, hard to tell what’s the fault of the actual game vs. the newer edition.

Heiluri

If you do under water exploration then there won’t be much of fighting or dying except when running out of the air, but when doing shmup part you will get ganked a lot. Due getting pair of hits in might be enough to get you balloon popped up. o.o And it is really bullet hell game on top of that and amount of stuff on skies and enemies will get seriously high just after a while. So it has chill part and then the very opposite survival shmup bullet hell part. :D

ToPR

That’s just normal reaction to have. That’s why people want other people to play rage games! :D Did give keyboard little organ solo treatment after that one for sure! >:( Had one of those real desperation moments with Tyd Wag, that games is pure piece of shit and i still wonder why the heck did i push through the damned thing. D: Talked with steam friend about it and they said other game from same devs was same kind of nerve wrecking experience! o.o Yeah tight controls are must in platformer which gives you good amount of ass beating, frustration due dying because of controls is immeasurable. :D Indeed old games might need fix or two before they even start, these worked right on, but added patch to fix some amount of things from the EWJ series. My ideology is to remove games from account if i will not play them and give adept chance for every game before doing that. Annoying though that can’t do it with combined games. :F Most people tend to have hard time play older game in series if they start with the new one, tend to like myself start with the older if there are no reasons like story wise to pick on later. o.o So far had just pair of unplayable and some troublesome titles on top of that, but win 10 does surprisingly well support older games too and most have fan/userbase patches which is good. :)

Thanks for the info. :) I did see some gameplay of both above and under-water, I guess it’s just a lot of bullet hell games I’ve played look a lot more intense than they actually are (and assumed this one esp with the graphics)…lot of bullets but in general it gives you leeway, able to dodge the bullets fairly easily. It’s relaxing in a way, that I just tend to zone out. :P

Yeah it feels really rewarding beating a difficult platformer, but when the difficulty is due to bad controls it just makes it a relief for each level to be over with. Feel lucky that you didn’t die, not that satisfaction of “wow I’m a beast!!” There is something really charming and almost comforting about older pixel art games, I’m always tempted if I know it’ll prob be hell playing it. haha Those screenshots look great!

Heiluri

Sounds like it’s most likely you kind of game so will order it from tremor and sent you a friend request at steam. It should be most likely up for grabs tomorrow morning or so will sent key in chat. :)

Yeah it’s certainly not rewarding when it’s frustrating. Feeling that usually comes out is relief. :D

JaffaCaffa

That’s super kind of you, thank ya! Accepted. :)

kiseli

That is some nice progress :)

I didn’t know EWJ and EWJ 2 were on steam, and just found out they were part of bundle with MDK 1&2. Hope they get bundled again, loved playing those games long ago :D
Also i remember playing Sunless Sea, dropped playing it mid game coz of all those grinding. So i can understand your reasons for cheating :)

Heiluri

Got mine as swap, didn’t want the game i got from other groupees grab bag so in exchange got the EWJ collection. 2nd is good times, but i would say that first is pretty horrible to play. :D Might in fact like the 3D more than it, but will see how bad it truly is. o.o’ Groupees has been leaking overleft keys in late bundles so maybe there might be some left, but i suspect most of those are gone by now thanks to those bundles/grab bags sadly. :F

It sure is and you need to know where to get what while games log is utterly useless in that, basically should use gamewiki or take notes all the time. Money waste + resource management and it becomes serious grind for sure. D: World around it and story was interesting and found good amount of enjoyment from it though quite many quests did end up being fetch that item quest and at worse fetch that item X times here. Apparently Devs have tried to fix that starting grind in their new game Sunless Skies, but hard to say. Maybe some day will get Zubmariner dlc for this or Sunless Skies. o.-

kiseli

Many games have those types of quest “fetch that item quest and at worse fetch that item X times here” and i never liked them. But both Sunless Seas/Skies look great, so i guess i will play them one day for the story :)

And those screenshot in Jaffa’s replies bring back some great memories ^_^

Heiluri

Their art style and immersion is great, but indeed they go too much towards being a cargo simulator, some quests are pure grind even. o.o’ Add in that resource managing with limited resources and it will certainly take the best part out of game which is exploring the wide sea, it’s secrets and stories. Worthwhile to got through if you pass by the meaningless grind like i did, but it has still the lacking side due some quest grind and don’t know why they censored words “damn/bloody”. :D

Tend to like put screenshots for mentioned games in comments so one for Sunless Sea, guess did just forgot them first. o.- I’m happy that getting chances to play quite many old school games that couldn’t back then. Some are very nostalgic indeed. :)
