2 December 2020 / Summary of November
Well can’t tell I’ve actually done much in terms of what I originally planned to play. However, I played a considerable amount of other stuff, including some progress on my brand new HOG ABC challenge which I decided to add for the times when I just binge-play a number of HOGs. No progress on Bad ABC though…
This does not get a Troll rating as it has some actual gameplay. Despite that, it has no point whatsoever. You just blast enemies and try to survive, 2 minutes per run probably. No achievements, in-game unlockables, story or levels to keep playing longer than a couple of runs.
Sadly, this one-chapter tech-demo/game doesn’t run on my PC for some reason. After multiple tries I just gave up and watched a video on Youtube what's it about and gave a rating based on what I've seen. Yeah it's short and not really a game but I really wanted to play "everything half-life" so it's a pity I can't run this one.
I mean it’s ok, it looks nice and plays nice and all but…it just was not fun? I really didn’t feel like playing it anymore after my first try, and there being no story (which means a lot for me in games) felt the game was void of something. I don’t know, this one’s just really not for me.
Some new mini-games (like chasing a guy on a horse) but all are way too short and way too easy. The story was way too clear immediately. The voice acting…”Nevin” and “my son” was repeated like 2000 times and I wanted him to die somewhere mid-game already. HOPs were beautiful although that alone doesn’t change the fact the game overall is disappointing.
Way too simple. Way too much walking back and forth with no fast travel. Sadly, it needs two playthroughs to get all achievements.
It’s a detective vs serial killer story, and I like those. Of course it’s super simple with a magical twist but it was decent for a HOG. Nothing much else to say, I liked however that HOPs could be swapped to Monaco games so you can actually finish HOP with a couple of items left real quick without using hints.
Ok so this one's endless and not very well made. Anyway, as I'm a sucker for achievements, I'll play a bit daily to maybe get those in time.
Portal of Evil: Stolen Runes Collector's Edition
Definitely one of the best HOGs I’ve played - I can only compare it to the Enigmatis series and Darkarta. It looks good, has interesting and quite challenging puzzles, and the story is great for a HOG. The game follows its logic, and isn't dumb in how and where items are used. And you actually use some items multiple times - a lack of such feature always bothered me in other HOGs (e.g. when you "drop" the hammer and need it 2 minutes later).
Another endless HOG, apparently. Same as with Lost Lands, I'll probably play it some more for the achievements.
