☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆

Highway Blossoms is a cute, wonderful, genuine love story between Amber, a grieving young woman who travels the country in a motorhome, and Marina, a girl fresh out of high school who is on the hunt for treasure. It fills a niche that achingly needs to be filled - stories about same-sex relationships that aren’t fetishizing, and that are just like heterosexual romances, except for the genders of the protagonists. Amber and Marina’s relationship has its ups and downs, but as the two young women grow closer there is just so much budding love and happiness it is truly a balm for the soul.

That’s not to say there isn’t conflict - Amber and Marina embark on a treasure-hunt expedition where they compete against another motorhome and their inhabitants - their rivals - on who will find the gold first. As the story progresses and as the relationship takes center stage, the conflict isn’t ‘oh no! we’re gay! gay is bad! we’ll get heckled for holding hands in the street!’ but rather Amber is terrified she’s undeserving of Marina’s love because of how broken Amber is as a person, for not being able to take care of her Grandpa well enough. It’s escapist fiction of the best sort, where homophobia doesn’t exist, and it’s like a weight off the shoulders.

The game isn’t perfect - the writing isn’t the type that really gets me in my chest, and unfortunately the well-drawn sprites and the lively kinetic way they move about result in the sprites being scaled-down and looking somewhat pixellated and aliased for the vast majority of the novel, making the art look of lesser quality than it is. But there were times I choked up, and I felt really happy in the end, and because of that I’m wholeheartedly putting this on my Visual Novel Masterpost list.

Next up: I know something you don’t know. Let’s return to Hinamizawa….

See you soon!

That’s one of the reasons why I recommended it last time (does it still count as a recommendation if you were gonna play it anyway? >_>).

I’m really glad to hear you liked it too, that game just made me so happy with all the random banter and quips between the characters. While I was reading it I was genuinely looking forward to enjoy a slice of it after coming back from work, just like you look forward to a slice of dessert to top off a good meal.

I can’t really put it well into words but it was also really refreshing to see that for once a lesbian relationship is not there just to show some boobs and satisfy the reader’s fetish but it felt genuine and 100% part of the story and of the character arc. I’m not an expert when it comes to VNs so it always feels weird to “act” like one and make recommendations, but Highway Blossoms is an exception, I’ll keep recommending it to death ^^

Yes!!!! absolutely I agree. It felt so real and genuine. The titties/fetish thing is a problem for VNs as a genre when it comes to portraying women and dating them, and of course it’d be ‘double’ difficult to find something not like that when it’s just girls - still presumably written for a male audience. Highway Blossoms was very much not like that and we’re both right there together in agreement at how great that is.

Also, you don’t need to be an expert to make VN recs! Who really is or could be? If you played a game and liked it, that’s all that you need to recommend it. I really like how you talked about the game - the dessert comparison is really clutch - so if it’s okay, can I link your comment in the masterpost?

It’s just a personal thing I guess, I second-guess myself thinking my recommendation would look stupid to someone who knows more than me and could easily pull out names of other titles that are better than the one I’m recommending.

can I link your comment in the masterpost?

Sure ^^

There’s no need to have played tons of titles to recommend something, if you stumble upon something you like a lot then it’s most definitely good. Bad VNs can be easily recognized from a mile of distance.

I’m going to play this soon for my ABC challenge, can’t wait! The world needs more yuri stories that are cute and not fetishizing.
