Update Two Hundred and Fifty-Four: 26 November 2018

Nameless -The One Thing You Must Recall-

78 hours playtime, ~6 hrs actual, no achievements
Did Not Finish/10

☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆

November has been rapidly disappearing. I think, unless I can really turn it around this upcoming week, this will be the month with the fewest games played since I joined BLAEO. I’m not thrilled with that, and because of that I’m freeing myself up by dropping this VN.

I finished two routes out of six, and it’s just… it’s just… it’s just not working. It takes an interesting enough premise—the protagonist’s five ball-jointed dolls have suddenly turned human, hijinks ensue—and just doesn’t pull it off with any kind of panache. It’s silly and melodramatic, but in a way that comes off as confused rather than balanced. The writing isn’t great, and the characters aren’t, either. It’s been a real chore to get even this far, and it’s a fool’s errand to try to continue.

I feel a little bad—this game doesn’t go on sale, and a friend of mine bought it for me at full price because it’d been on my wishlist for forever. If another monthly theme involves finishing a game you dropped, I might take a look at this again. But I’ve got literally more than 60 VNs to read, and I can’t spare any more time for this one right now.

See you soon!

Glad it’s not only me :D

On the other hand you had one of your best gaming experiences with Yakuza 0 if I interpreted your review right. So that counts for something, right?

tsupertsundere

Hahaha, it was interpreted correctly! It counts for a lot. There’s been months where I played a ton of games, and most of them were meh or only okay. I’m cool with having a month mostly focused on one incredible game, even if I’m gonna push to at least approach 10 games played.

I just got caught - typically if I’m playing one long game in a category, then I’m playing shorter games in the other category. I just got stuck in long games in both, and my reticence to actually sit and play Nameless made it go even longer. Conversely, my desire to just read Yakuza fanfic ALSO cut in to my game playin’ time. This month was doomed from the start!

heres hoping enigma is much better

Thank you! I’m already more hopeful about it - it’s got a unique, old-fashioned anime art style that’s endeared it to me already, and the writing seems deft!
