8/10

☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆

A cute, funny love letter to and send up of point and click adventure games, the Darkside Detective offers up nine bite-sized adventures following Detective McQueen and his companion Officer Dooley as they solve strange, spooky cases. It’s a fun, light romp that doesn’t take itself seriously, and has humor that is largely successful, though I think a little too reliant on in-jokes and references. (Though the Carrie Fisher obituary was choice as hell)

The game originally shipped with six cases, and a further three were added as free updates, which I always appreciate. Each case’s length varies, some more around, like, the ten-twenty minute mark and others closer to an hour. It’s the perfect point and click adventure game for a working pafesshional - the puzzles aren’t all that goofy, and you can sit down and finish a case in the few scant moments you have to yourself after work.

The spookiness of the cases is varied, and the locations are, too - stuck inside a library, a mall at christmastime, your precinct after it’s been invaded by gremlins. The side characters are appropriately goofy and charming, though the real charm is the surprisingly sweet friendship between Detective McQueen and Dooley.

This is a must-play for any point and click adventure fan. It won’t change your life, but it will make you smile - and that’s pretty goddamn important.

Next up: The theme…. continues!

See you soon!

Pretty much the same as Wailing Heights, the game looks very interesting judging from the store page. Only this time your review actually corroborates this impression. Glad that you ended up liking it, but now I’ll have to keep an eye on one more game and there are already soooo many :D

It’s worlds different! The feel of play, the ease navigating around, the crispness and polish - oh, man.

Yes… I’m feeling the same way @_@ I haven’t really been buying games this past year, and my wishlist is steadily approaching 500. Issa problem. I’m already foreseeing a big Winter Sale blowout.

Yeah, why do we always want what we don’t have :( I feel the same although there is a ton of great games in my backlog left

Nice. I have Darkside Detective queued for a replay, especially since some of those missions weren’t available when I played before.

The quality holds up! The eighth case is pretty short, but the seventh is decently long and the ninth is quite long.

I’m definitely going to pick up the second season, and I’m glad Darkside Detective did what it does.
