Some of you might remember our theme in April of the same name (and banner), and after several people asking for it (and us/me procrastinating a lot), we'll try to keep this as monthly event! We will (try to) start and end every round mid-month, so it overlaps with regular themes and gives you an option in case you don't like a theme or are already done with it. This is a work in progress and we would appreciate any feedback on how to improve on the concept.
The main goal of this is of course to motivate you to reduce your backlog and help you pick some games to do just that. And you can help others do the same! For our first instance of this event, we're mainly going with the original rules of the theme, but over the next month we'll likely tweak them, hopefully with your input!
If you've used the Steam group forums at all, you may have also seen a suggestion about profile badges, including participation badges for themes. We thought for this additional and hopefully regular) event, we will give out two permanent badges that basically level up the more you participate, one for finishing challenges (up to 2 per month) and one for issuing challenges/picking for others. Since badges are still quite a ways off, we'll keep an internal spreadsheet for now, so if we ever implement that, your "progress" won't be lost ;)
This round will last until August 19th, the next one should start a few days before that (hopefully on the 15th).
Post your application for this month’s challenge as a reply here. Please before doing so, read the corresponding section below. Also, if you decide to pick games for others, read the corresponding section before you do so. If you encounter any problem with the games that were picked for you (either technical or if you think they don’t follow the guidelines) and can’t solve it with your picker, please leave a message as a reply of the first comment.
If you decide to challenge an assassin that hasn’t applied yet, post your challenge as a reply to the second comment for tracking purposes. Please follow the pickers’ guideline below and use the same formatting (code ready to be copy/pasted and completed at the bottom of this post). Remember it’s your responsibility to notify your target, and if they accept your challenge, they’re free to challenge you back even if you already applied.
Applicants’ guidelines
- Please make sure your games are sorted by completion before applying.
- If you have in mind a specific person you want to pick games for you, specify it in your application and notify them. They have 24h to reply to your request, after that delay your request will most likely be filled by somebody else.
- If you so desire and you have at least 5 unplayed SG wins, the 5 games can be picked out of your SG wins (instead of only 2/5). Just note it in your application comment.
- Note in your post if you're ok playing multiplayer only games.
- Same for Early Access (I know some people want to wait for release).
- When you finish one (or more) of the games picked for you, please post an update by replying to your picker's comment.
- If the game has achievements, you can link to either the Steam or Astats page corresponding to your progress.
- If the game doesn't have achievements, please post a screenshot showing your completion.
- Finally, if you have completed all the games that were assigned to you but want another go at it, feel free to post another application.
Pickers’ guidelines
- You can pick for/challenge up to 2 fellow assassins, please refrain to pick more so everybody who wants get a chance at it.
- You can pick for anybody who has applied and hasn't been given a list yet, unless they specified otherwise (see next point). It is recommended to signal with a "reserved" comment that you're currently picking for that person. This way it'll avoid the situation where you spend time picking games just to come back to somebody's comment 2 minutes prior.
- If the person has specified somebody particular to pick game for them and the comment is less than a day old, please skip to the next comment. If it's been more than a day and the person still doesn't have a list, feel free to pick for them.
- Please use the following criteria when picking a list for somebody.
- Length-wise: at least 2 short games (under 10h to beat) and 2 medium (under 15-20h). You can use HLTB to check the time, or more conveniently the Enhanced Steam browser extension (it shows the HLTB time directly on the game's steam page). That rule can be overridden by the bottom (i.e. pick 5 short games) but not the other way around, as not everybody has the same time to dedicate to gaming.
- Pick two SG wins unless the person specified SG wins only, in which case pick only in the applicant's SG wins list.
- Quality-wise: at least 3 of the 5 games should have a positive (or above) rating. You can use this site to quickly sort games in a user's library by ratings (thanks to JaffaCaffa for the suggestion).
- Please, respect the applicant's choice regarding multiplayer-only and Early access games, as well as other requests (exclusion of certain genre etc.).
- Please use the code below to post your comment, it's already formatted, you just have to copy/paste & complete the data.

FAQ
Do I have to participate in this event?
No, this is an event to help you reduce your backlog. If you already have a plan and don't want anyone to pick games for you, you're free to ignore it.
What happens if I don’t participate in the event?
Absolutely nothing.
What happens if I play all the games picked for me this month?
Still nothing. (You might get a shiny profile badge at some later date. And you can come back for another batch.)
What if I don’t have time to play 5 games?
Don’t worry, one is enough, we’re just asking the pickers to select 5 to give the player a little choice.
One of the game picked for me won’t run on my computer for X or Y reason, what do I do?
If this happens, please notify the picker by replying his comment and ask them to pick a replacement. If the original picker don’t give you an answer within 24h, don’t panic, just leave a comment and we’ll pick one for you. Meanwhile, you could try one of the other picked games if you haven't played them all yet.
I played all 5 games that were picked for me and I want more!
If you have completed all 5 games and reported your completion to the original comment, you can make a new request for another list.
When picking for other people, can I only pick “never played” games?
Not necessarily, you can also pick games that seem to have been abandoned but haven’t been categorized as “won’t play”. No beaten or completed games, or games being currently played obviously.
Why are there so many rules for picking the games? I can’t be bothered!
We’re trying to make this enjoyable for everyone so if you decide to pick games for others, please read and follow the rules. I’ve tried to make it as easy as possible for the pickers too, but if it’s bothering you too much, remember you don’t need to pick games for others to join the challenge.

I hope this isn’t too big of a bother for you, Narayan, but I can’t run Valley. I’m playing Kathy Rain rn as my replacement for Viscera Cleanup Detail, and I don’t know if you want to pick another game to replace Valley or to just let me stay as is.

I’d like to join the challenge, but as it would be my first time participating in something like this I’d prefer if the games picked for me would be from my recent-but-still-unplayed SG wins or from the list of games I intend to clear before the end of the year.
As I’ve picked the list for Draco I think it would be fair to let them pick if they’re interested, so post a list only if this post is over 24 hours long, thank you :3

Done:
- Kimmy (screenshot), it was closer to 1.5 hours just like Nina Freeman’s previous game Cibele. Interesting storytelling of “adult” things from the eyes of a child, but other than that it didn’t impress too much
- Crimson Trigger (Achievements) - this game was a slow-motion trainwreck. Some ideas were there but the execution was questionable to say the least. Having to restart the same stage 4 different times due to multiple spots where you can fall through the world and into the void was frustrating
- Alicemare (Achievements) - it wasn’t as scary/horror-ish as I initially thought, just a touch of creepy and weird that I enjoyed. I had to rely on a guide to progress a couple times, some riddles were surprisingly difficult x_x
- Tales from the Borderlands (Achievements) - top 3 best “recent-style” Telltale Games game well deserved, it was a blast ^^
Failed:
- World End Economica episode 01 - Multiple health issues have left me little time to play in the first half of the month, I don’t think I’ll be able to read it in time ;_;

Wish there were more challenging levels and that there was better level progression or order they are sorted by, some earlier levels were “harder” then the ones in the end :)
Completed Fran Bow Interesting and weird story in the end. But didn’t like 3rd and 5th chapter at all, others were ok.
Beaten Grim Legends: The Forsaken Bride, cool HOG, interesting story. Might play bonus adventure too. Not in the mood to hunt 100% though :)
Couldn’t run Alien: Isolation on current old PC, since my laptop died. And i wasn’t in the mood to play South Park: The Stick of Truth in the end. They are all added to “Challenge Me” list which i plan to finish one day :D

I didn’t play it myself, but got the game since i wanted to play it but never got to it. People say that there are no jump scares and it is all about atmosphere. But if you don’t like it and don’t want to try it i can change the game, you have plenty of great games in backlog so finding something else wont be hard :)
Glass Masquerade - Beautiful and relaxing, but short.
Alan Wake - Light on jumpscares, but had a very tense atmosphere.
Strider - Good mindless fun.
Beholder - Fired! Out of a Cannon. was an ending achievement.
Broken Age - Excellent art and animation. Decent gameplay but some nonsensical puzzles.

I really liked it! This is kinda the first game I beat (I’m not counting Ori because it ran just as well on my old laptop) on my new gaming PC! So I got to play with graphics maxed at 60 fps. It was really beautiful and I have to say combat at 60 fps is much easier.
Somehow this game seemed really perfect for me! I’m really a sucker for female main characters, and I love games that are focused on the story. The combat style was also really fun. I often struggle with combos in combat but this game was pretty simple. It reminded me of Sleeping Dogs which I adored! The camera was an issue but it got a bit better when I edited the config files to increase the FOV.
So it was a good pick, thank you! My 2nd monitor should be arriving tomorrow which is when I’ll start trying to 100% it (so that I can have the collectibles guide open at the same time haha.)

Please avoid coop/multiplayer/mmo games. I don’t have many, but some. I got most of them because I wanted to play them with a certain friend and it will take a while.
Please ignore ratings from steam. I don’t care about them. Every game (with one exception I think) I own, I have for one reason: I want to play it. So I don’t care about the opinion of strangers. BUT! I do care about YOUR opinion! So I ask one thing of you: Please think about what you choose for me. I would like games, that you a) have played and enjoyed or that b) seem interesting to you.
You may ignore all my personal sortings like Batch or what ever. So you can pick from: Never Played and Unfinished (or my sorting: Undone and Undone - No Achievements ).

I also enjoyed Enclave very much, it’s a perfectly fine action rpg thing in my opinion. Stealth Inc (AKA Stealth Bastard 2) can be a bit frustrating at times, so feel free to ignore that one if you’re not a fan of difficult games (though I played it - never finished, huh, gotta go back to it one day O.o - and I think it’s better than the first Stealth Bastard game :) ).

Really sorry but im gonna refund the half-life games (bought the half-life pack this last sale). I tried playing the first game but the crappy graphics (not the game’s fault as it is from the 1900s) and glitchy mechanics really turned me off. I’d appreciate it if you could choose two other games for me. thanks
You can start with 2nd. It’s not difficult to understand plot without playing 1st game. 2nd Half-Life was made in 2004, so it’s outdated too, but not too much.

I really do want to give the Half Life series a chance and I’ve decided to skip the first game and play Black Mesa when its fully released instead before moving onto the others, so I’ve got it sitting in my wait pile for now. If you can pick another I’d be really grateful!

Well I think that’s got to be the most diverse mix of genres I’m going to experience lol :P I thought about moaning about Layers of Fear as I’m a total horror wuss but I think it’s good to go out of my comfort zone and actually beat the backlog otherwise what’s the point of having it in there… if you’d picked Outlast then that would be different!

About diverse mix of genres, i always try to pick different genres since i really don’t know what someone likes to play, checking steam/BLAEO profile thoroughly would be way to much time consuming and who knows if i would find out :D In your case you played and are planning to play plenty of different games, so why not just continue with that :P And getting out of comfort zone might be a good thing :)
According Layers of Fear reviews, it is walking simulator game with horror setting. So no fighting, just scary surroundings/atmosphere :)

I’ll try and write a big post tomorrow covering them, I had fun with a lot of them I hope you’re pleased to hear, so thanks again for the picks :) I will say however that Layers of Fear was very hard going for me but you couldn’t have predicted that :P Monkey Island was easily my favourite.

Horror games are really interesting genre, most of people play games to enjoy them while in horror you must overcome your unease, anxiety or fear. And way difficult then movies since you are the one things are happening about.
I’d like to be challenged too. I really need to stop playing Battleborn so that’d be a good way to limit myself haha.
Anything is fine I guess, outside of early access game, racing or multiplayer one. There is over 200 games to pick from between unfinished and never played games. Thank you!

Then about the even rating, on steam it says mixed but I think even works too. I’m not a native English speaker either though so I might be wrong about that but anyway, to get back on that Porno Studio Tycoon, I’m not too sure how I could complete it, plus it is really hard (I went bankrupt super fast!). But I’ll try to do something about it once more haha.

Just finished Ethan Carter, it’s visually a really pretty game. I didn’t expect it to have scary part though so I was a bit surprised there haha. But that was a nice first game to beat! Next will probably be Mordor.

I finished Mordor and wow, it was really great. I wasn’t expecting it to be so fun! I’m not a big fan of lord of the rings so I was always put off by the game, despite being a huge beat em all fan but that was my mistake, it’s a great game! Loved how violent the game is also, it was pretty fun to cut down all these Uruks/Orcs or whatever they are.
Also, I did a little session of Strawberry Vinegar in between and I got owned hard. I got a bad end after like half an hour only… First playthrough and game over almost immediately :’D I’ll try to get a better ending next time.
And I’ll try to think about which game I’ll beat next too, I’m still not sure which one to pick out of what’s left.

Boom! Finished them all, well, almost all of them haha.
I dropped Porno Tycoon. It was way too boring. Though I was getting better this time, so at least I managed to get a few achievements but it really isn’t that entertaining unfortunately, so I will not complete all games. :(
But I finished the other two left. Minecraft Story was cool, and that’s coming from someone who’s not a fan of Minecraft the game! There were some weak parts though, and most choices were kind of too “easy”, like there was no grey area, it was either good or bad. But it’s a telltale game and I’m quite a fan of their games so I still enjoyed it. The 3 bonus chapters were pretty cool adventures also. So yeah, overall it was a pleasant ride :D
Then there was Strawberry Vinegar. Since I failed miserably the first time, I decided to be extra nice this time. And things went a lot better haha. It’s a sweet story, the art was pretty nice, the story okayish though it’s a slice of life so basically it’s just daily life but we had a fair amount of choices which was nice. The game has six different ending apparently, I got the first and last one. I’ll probably try to see the other ones using a guide at some point, but that may take a while. As it was packed full of fluffy stuff and I got enough of it for some time now haha.
Anyway, that was nice, thanks for picking up these games. It motivated me to finish some games for once xD I still have to finish Homefront, unfortunately I lost my save after formatting the PC. I didn’t know the game didn’t use steam cloud… There’s also Guild Wars 2! New expansion is coming soon, and beta is happening tomorrow for the whole week end. I might be busy but I’ll probably fail again at finishing any game… :D

Ha, just the same happened with me. I don’t like Minecraft, but I love those TT games, and so I liked the game. Even so much, I thought about giving Minecraft a go…. and then didn’t because it’s a building and no adventure game the TT game makes it seem :]

Story really is not important for evoland… more like the game development evolution of RPG game from every treasure chest you open is interesting.

For the second, there’s actually a story and so many references to other games, plus a lot of interesting gameplays. If you have it, you should give it a try when you have the time (it’s longer than the first one).

Cool.. just did my first run of Ittle Dew.
I was completly clueless and got stuck alot but somehow I finished it with 2 hours and 20 minutes with just fire and ice weapon.
Was stuck so long in the castle that i cannot find enough gold to buy the portal rod which I really should gotten first.
Very smart and interesting game. I will replay it several times to try to get 100%. (and I will refer to online guide for the few doors i cannot unlock to get gold to buy portal rod.

A lot harder then expected for such a short game and I died way too much. There is an achievement of finish this ironman. I think i will skip that one.

Finished Tahira and it was very good, even tho the ending is a little abrupt and leaves a lot of things unanswered. I didn’t get many cheevos as they’re all quite specific and a bit tricky, but it’s okay.

I just played (and finished) The Little Acre and it was short but really sweet and cute. I’m missing a cheevo for a speedrun as well as one that was mutually exclusive with 2 others, so I might replay it now that I know how to solve the puzzles. Thanks again for the pick!

Ys was an entertaining action/adventure/whacking things with swords experience, let down a little bit by the occasional need to level grind. Still fun to play through, though, and the soundtrack was very well done.
Freedom Planet was a reminder that I’m not speedrunner material at all.
I started a Zann Consortium campaign in Empire at War, but haven’t had time to finish it yet. What I’ve played so far looks very promising though, thanks for the recommendation.

Zann Consortium? Sounds like from the expansion. I only played base campaign, it nicely ties into the movies between ep 3 & 5. Maybe that would be a better starting point.

sorry for the super late reply to this but: Before the challenge started, some of the mods already agreed to take care of older requests, but next time we could add a rule for after 48 hrs or so for everyone, in case the mods don’t see it/are too busy. Thanks for the suggestion :)
