Update Two Hundred and Ninety-Four: 21 March 2019

Epistory - Typing Chronicles

17.9 hours playtime, 55 of 55 achievements
7.5/10

☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆

Ohhh my fuckin fingertips hurt.

A very fun game with a not-so-fun amount of grinding, I only 100% cleared Epistory because of sheer determination and Critical Role (I care about D&D now, much to my anger, all thanks to my criminal monk I’m playing in a friend’s campaign.)

Epistory is a lovely typing game, definitely better than fuckin Mavis Beacon touch-typing they had when I was a kid, and more kid-friendly than Typing of the Dead. Everything is in a lovely papercraft-origami style, emphasizing the written word. As you explore more of the world, new parts of the landscape pop up and unfold and it’s delightful. At the highest setting it runs kind of hot with not a lot of visible improvement to the visuals (some shadows are smoothed) so it’s a game that looks nice no matter what the setting is.

There’s minor puzzles mixed in with the typing, but the typing is the main focus. You get four elemental powers, each with different effects, and I thought that that varied gameplay up nicely (though the ice power is by far the best).

I found the story to be somewhat disappointing - unanchored emotional beats culminating in a ‘… okay, guess that’s what they were talking about’ ending.

I know a lot of people were looking forward to my review of this game, but honestly I’ve typed enough for one day! It’s a relaxing, forgiving game. It certainly helped me brush up on my typing speed! Give it a shot!

Next up: Challenge Me 2 of 5!

See you soon!

That’s impressive…100%’ing this sucker in 17.9 hours. Did you not idle it at all? Is it only VNs you idle? Your fans want to know. I played it (am playing it?) on an alt and have taken 10.7h and haven’t finished the main story yet, and have only killed 1,769 / 10,000 enemies for “Insect’s Bane.” Also my WPM sucks since I tend to be slow but steady. I’d probably start a new game and replay the opening to try to get the “Diamond” (no mistake) achievements. But I’m not looking to 100% it.

Really? That seemed to be about the standard, I thought. I idle probably 75% of my games, mostly VNs. I idled Yakuza 0 a ton, for example, but not Epistory! It mostly depends on how hot the game runs.

You can get the Diamond achievements easily in the arena mode because it doesn’t reset when you die. Just go slow!

Well, everything seems fast by my standards. I routinely need to double HLTB times, or triple them in the case of RPGs. ;)
Some is that because of playing with kids (esp games where I let them play), but some of it is just me. :)
Ah, haven’t tried Arena Mode…good tip.

I’m thinking about playing this one soon… thanks for the review and congrats on 100%!

It’s well worth time spent on it!

You’re very welcome - thank you for reading!

Oof congrats! I’m kinda stuck xD I always thought I typed fast, had good WPM, but I kept dying at one spot and haven’t touched it since xD

tsupertsundere

I had that, too - I ended up having to go do more ‘main quest’ stuff to unlock more powers/upgrade the ones I had already.

OOOOOOOOOOR you could just lower the difficulty
