Delete! Delete! Delete!

Made quite a dent in my library this week… No, not by playing a bunch of games (I only played the one listed below), but from deleting them! I got to a point where I was ashamed of having so many games in my library that I had no intention of ever playing (many of which were only picked up for the trading cards), that I went on a bit of a cleaning spree, and removed over 300 from my account (from 1353 to 1045)… Now there are still quite a few games in my “won’t play” list, but those are honestly more of a suggested “won’t play” than guaranteed one. And now, if I decide to pick a game at random to play, I won’t have to worry about re-rolling multiple times until I find one that I would genuinely like to play :P

  • Guild of Dungeoneering - For the first 2/3rds of this game, I was loving it. I never used to be big into card-based combat games, but I have been having a ball with them lately, it seems. The music was a joy to listen to, and the gameplay, while difficult at first, proved to quite rewarding once mastered. The story was very simple (dude wants revenge on a guild, so he creates his own to rival it), and through it you end up "building" your own guild. Now that said, there isn't much customization in the "building". Every time you purchase a new character-class, or sheet of weapon/armor cards, you place down a "room" that will connect to the rest of your guild... It is all purely cosmetic, as there are no bonuses for where they are placed. And truth be told, the rooms don't even look that different from one another.

Now, there are 13 classes of characters (over 3 different purchasing-tiers), which up until the final "act" of the game, provides you with quite a bit of variety on how to tackle your missions - Do you want a quick character who always gets first strike? Or how about someone who has a lot of shielding cards? Maybe someone who is great at countering? Magic-dealer? Healer? A character that draws his entire deck into his hand? And this is where the game is the most enjoyable... Until you get to the 3rd area of missions... Because all of those tier 1 and 2 characters that you had fun with are essentially rendered useless. They don't have the health or starting cards to keep up with the high-damaging enemies that spawn. So if you hadn't saved up and purchased one of the tier-3 characters, you pretty much have to go back and farm the second area's bosses to get enough gold to buy one... And no, there are no ways to "level up" your tier-1 and 2 characters (There are random "battle scars" that can give a slight buff/debuff, but it's usually something akin to "start each battle with a level 1 card", which definitely doesn't help in the 3rd area). Now, that's not to say that the tier-3 characters are boring (the deck-drawing character is one, and he was fun), but being walled off from characters that you were enjoying playing around with did put a hamper on the experience.

I love deleting games. Just deleted a couple today. Sometimes I keep a game around because I think somebody else might want to play it someday (kids, friend, relative), but otherwise I’ll delete it.
