So another quieter month for me then, but possibly less so than the number of actually completed games would suggest. For one I have been continuing to grind away on Company of heroes 2 and civilisation V, both games I'll probably never complete. I also spent a lot of time playing SG wins that I'd not fully beaten, and whilst I did complete subnautica, I only managed to 'beat' COD BLOPS II and Shadow of mordor for now. But they are at least played to the end, so I can confidently say that I have given all of my SG wins the attention the generousity of the givers deserves.
I have now done 52 games this year so far, which means my goal may need to be extended. I feel like 120 would be possible, but I guess we'll see how June goes. I also briefly touched on 70% completion for the first time during this month, but ruined it by starting a couple of new games. I think June will crack that egg properly. (He says, knowing that the summer sale is around the corner).
Cute in many ways, albeit a bit on the short side. I think they spent more time on the animations than the game design side, so the puzzles weren't too difficult, but it wasn't offensive.
My obligatory 'coffee break' game for the month. What can I say, I like jigsaw puzzles.
Hmm well I was hoping for something different, but I guess they've found a formula and are sticking to it now. I think they've maybe fixed up the 'knight run' game as well, as I didn't find it to be nearly as grindy as people made out in the discussions.
I think playing this the month after I played hitman was maybe a mistake, but I guess judged on it's own merits it was fine (especially at the price I paid). Ok so the voice acting and cutscenes are just laughably bad, but that comes with the territory and is forgivable. What was annoying was the inconsistencies in gameplay. Like you'll distract a guard away from their post to try and sneak in to somewhere and they'll still get triggered even if they're not looking at you. Other times you'll run past a guy, his meter starts going up and then he just looks away and forgets you exist. ("What is that person doing sneaking over there??? I better go and investi.. SQUIRREL!!!")
And on the hardest setting I don't really know how it would be possible to beat without glitching out the AI in some way. Thankfully the achievements can be done on the easier settings, and that helps make it more enjoyable. Anyway, if this game had come out at the same time as hitman 1 or 2, it would be brilliant, and in that sense, I'd say it's fine to play with lowered expectations, and certainly not at full price.
So I 'beat' this last year when it was still in Early access, and it had 3 little achievements. But I thought I'd wait until it was more complete before trying again. Then I dabbled a bit more in the experimental branches to get some of the achievements. And finally this month decided to finish it, in light of the monthly theme. It really is a great game. I know it's got these scary looking things in it, but what I love is that for the most part, they aren't "out to get you". If you stay out of their way, you'll be left alone. It really is a realistic representation of what exploring the ocean would be like. Danger, yes, but also a sense of wonder as you discover new things. I also loved the more alternative way they told the story, through logs and diaries, so you could piece together what was happening on your own, and the emphasis remained on exploration and discovery. Definitely worth the accolades it's recieved. My youngest son also loved it, despite the threat of being eaten by a Leviathan.
Last few days of the month, lots of gaming done, but only 5 games actually beaten?!? WHAT! What's installed and won't take too long to wrap up. 12 labours part II it is I guess. What can I say? Very much 'casual' games, but also good at what they do, so why not?
Your impressions of every game sound like exactly what I would expect of them! Except Subnautica – I keep being relatively disappointed by ocean-faring games and so I set my expectations low. Your descriptions sounds like it may still be exactly what I’m looking for though (apart from the sea life not being realistic). ‘Grats on completing some larger, more time-consuming titles!
Yeah I think survival games too easily fall into the trap of being very combat focused. What I love about subnautica is that you are essentially only a tourist in this world, trying to find a way home again. The fauna can be dangerous but you can also avoid it by being careful. So yeah, I think it’s the best single player survival experience I’ve played.
