Hello everybody!
Well, this was a quitting week. Let’s start with the bad news:

Abbandoned

Alpha Protocol: Many people suggested me this game even though I said I’m not really into RPGs and well… Right before I start the game I’m asked to choose between a lot of skills or whatever they are and come on, I want to play and action game, not The Sims. I don’t care about reading what they do and choosing so I uninstalled instantly.

Assault Android Cactus: This one is fun, it just kinda gets harder at some point (to play alone, at least) and it isn’t that good so I didn’t think it was worth the time. I’d rather play something else from the backlog.

Draw Slasher: It’s a dam mobile game.

Eternal Senia: Somebody told me that this wasn’t the average JRPG and it was more action based so I should give it a try. Well, the combat is pretty lame and every step I give the character has something to say. I just want to play the game, if you’re gonna interrupt the gameplay to say something it at least has to be interesting.

GRID: I really like racing games but I’m more on the Need For Speed side. I didn’t like the driving on GRID. Maybe it was too realistic? Maybe it drifts too much? I don’t really know, I just didn’t like it.

Just Cause 2: This is a really fun game. It’s packed with explosions, shooting, grappling, comedy, etc. and I really liked it from the beginning. Thing is, is only like that on the beginning. Then I have to drive from one side of the map to the other just to start a mission. Not only that, a side mission, because main missions are locked behind this crap and I can’t even get there without being chased by the cops. I just want to play the game goddammit!

Unfinished

Immortal Redneck: I really liked this one. No bs, just load the game, shoot stuff, die, repeat. I couldn’t even complete the first pyramid yet but it is still fun to try.

Beaten

Bastion: I heard good things about this game so I was expecting something too good maybe. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a really fun game and I love that the story is being told as you play so it won’t interrupt. Is fun, it can be challenging, it is ok. I just don’t think is that good. Anyway, I liked it and finished the story but I didn’t got the achievement for some reason. I didn’t like it enough to try and get all the achievements tho.

That’s it for this week. Everybody stay safe and have a nice week!

Bastion has been on my to play list for a while. It came out during an indie boom but I never got around to playing it. The Steam reviews overall are overwhelmingly positive, but the recent ones are just Very Positive. I think people’s estimation of the game has settled.

I just won Immortal Redneck. Installing now!

I mean Bastion is really fun, I think the main problem is that people talk about it like it is too good. Or maybe is because of the story? idk.

Have fun with Immortal Redneck, it gets better everytime you die (?

Lex

I am having a blast with Immortal Redneck! I’ve already put 6 hours into it and am at 41%!

Sadwich

where do you see the %? I haven’t noticed about it xd

Lex

I meant achievements.

Reading through what you have here, i think a lot of the problem might be that you are a bit too late to some of these games.
Alpha protocol came out at a time when we were chock-a-block loaded with generic shooters with plots that were all your basic, ‘go here shoot this, go there, blow up this’ and for a lot of people the freedom of choice offered by Alpha protocol was great. It had its flaws, but the fact the my brother and I both played it and got a very different story, showed off the flexibility, and I wish more games played with the narrative like this did.
Just cause 2, the act of getting from A to B was always supposed to be part of the fun. It’s been done better in recent years, but at the time, this huge world that was basically an action movie sandbox was amazing when I first played it. I didn’t even focus on the story until I’d conquered at least half the map. I don’t know if I could replay it now though, as I think they’ve learnt a lot about keeping open world games more engaging in recent years.
And Bastion, was one of the first games in the indie revolution. Again in hindsight, the gameplay is a bit generic, but the way the game’s narrator responded to you, the very distinct art style, topped off by some great music, made this the quintessential indie experience at the time, which showcased that there was a market for smaller games that were finely crafted.
But yeah, I think one’s opinion of these games is probably going to be heavily affected by when they played it, and how many other newer games they have played since then which improve or refine some of the ideas these games introduced. For many people who played them soon after release, the nostalgia goggles will probably make them think they were better than they are.

On top of that, part of the problem is that I don’t feel with the same energy to play games, so when they don’t start right away I get a bit annoyed. But I think most of the reason is what you say. I want to play something but since I can’t afford new games (or run them on some cases) I asked people to recommend me games from my library, which are mostly old games and well, as you say, people who played them when they released remembers them better than better.

But yeah me being a bored person also has something to do xd
