Well, after what feels like forever, I finally finished Just Cause 3 and the DLC.

I really enjoyed the game, it’s the most fun open-world game I’ve played, and I highly recommend it. You can read my full review here: http://steamcommunity.com/id/thenamelessone/recommended/225540
The DLC included with the Season Pass is really fun too, though the Mech Assault one seems to lose sight of what the game is about. The mechs it introduces are overpowered, both when you’re fighting in one and fighting against them. It foolishly ramps up the difficulty, which necessitates that you either wield a mech yourself or die repeatedly. But it’s a small blemish on an otherwise fantastic game.

sorry for the somewhat ignorant reply but what genre is just cause?
is it just a regular third person shooter?

Formidolosus

No it’s not a ‘regular’ third person shooter, gosh! It’s an epic physics and stunts playground with a story attached.

Seriously though, yes it is a third person shooter. Basically what makes it different to the likes of Saints row or Grand theft auto is that there’s a lot more emphasis on explosions and taking down military bases by destroying key assets. The world is also really big and the transversal system is fun, with a combination of wingsuit, grappling hook and parachute, as well as a vast array of vehicles. Also as a side note, it’s a game you can actually play with your kids.

Thanks for humoring me- I got the third person shooter part from the steam trailer and then after kinda just seeing a bunch of explosions was wondering if it was just like GTA…which I’m not fond of.

Off topic but I liked metal gear as a third person shooter/stealth and was finding tomb raider as a third person shooter/whatever the fuck it is pretty good (although kinda got distracted/never got back to it).
Also as a side note I really like when games have good movement systems-like I just finished DMC and had alot of fun with the grappling hook/flying around parts.
so instead of just ignoring this I might keep an eye on it.

Oh yeah it’s a different animal to GTA. I can’t stand GTA myself, but I love Just cause. I think it’s mostly because the humour comes across as being all mature in GTA, but it mostly just seems to be locker room level jokes, and so the tone of the stories doesn’t gel with me. It’s not as clever or ‘hardcore’ as it seems to think it is. Whereas JC gets its enjoyment from being a stereotypical 90s action movie, where our very sincere, white knight hero jets into the enemy base, pulls down a few bad guy structures with his grappling hook, takes on an army of bad guys and then walks away as the base blows up, making sure to not look back. It really does feel more like an action sandbox than any other game I’ve played, with chaos erupting at the drop of a hat. You should watch some actual gameplay videos, they’d give you the sense of it.

It’s an open-world, third-person action game. I wouldn’t call it a third-person shooter, as that describes games like Spec Ops and Gears of War, where the emphasis is on the shooting, and Just Cause is pretty different from them.

But not all open-world, third-person action games are alike, either. I didn’t like GTA IV at all - finding it boring, tedious, and just not enjoyable. I thought maybe I didn’t like open-world action games, since everyone else seemed to love it. But then I tried, and loved, Sleeping Dogs, and I loved Just Cause 3 even more. I loved these games because they remembered to be fun, and let me have fun within their games.

Just Cause 3 is different in that it’s ridiculously over the top rather than serious. You’re a one-man army, the star of your own personal action movie. The game starts with you standing on top of a flying airplane, using a rocket launcher to take out SAM sites. You have a grappling hook which lets you zoom around the environment, a parachute that lets you take to the skies, and a wingsuit that lets you fly.

The grappling hook can also be used to tether objects together. You can tether an enemy helicopter to a building to make it crash, or tether a tower to the ground to pull it down, or tether a soldier to the ceiling to leave him hanging there, etc. You can use it as a tool, to pull a prized car out of the ocean, or as a weapon, to tear down structures and cause vehicles to collide.

Everything is designed to be fun. For example, you can jump out of an airplane, fall through the air towards your destination, and then grappling hook into the ground at the last moment to not take fall damage. The story is lighthearted and entertaining, and accompanied by great voice acting and funny delivery. Every time you take over an enemy military base you get to hear David Tennant, as a captured reporter, read out the propaganda explanation for why that military base was “purposely” destroyed, and I laughed every time.
