Her Story

Detectives! Mystery! Murder! England, My Lionheart Make Believe - Simulated Lives Quirky

Play or Pay game that I really enjoyed. Most people probably know by now, but Her Story is an FMV game that has you watching short clips of police interviews with a woman whose husband died. The catch is that you have to find those videos by searching for words that appear. So while there are ways to get around that system, the point is to take clues from the videos you have seen to think of likely terms to search to find more. An interesting thing about the game is the way it has you learn information--usually completely out of order. You have to pay attention, think, and piece everything together. But it's also open-ended: you can go through routes of inquiry in whatever order you choose. The first time I tried to play this, I frustrated myself trying to use the videos saved in session feature to put all the clips in order, even though it should have been apparent the interface wasn't designed for that. The second time I didn't even attempt--I just put clips in my session bar when they made zero sense to me but seemed important so I could review them again when I was ready to search for the people/things mentioned in them.

AR-K

LMAO

Challenge Me! game. A mediocre point and click. Slow walking and a bit of clunkiness held it back some. It reminded me a bit of Beyond Good and Evil because of the animal characters and a young woman investigating something in a sci-fi setting. They did pretty well with the characters in general, and I guess the writing was at least passable, even in translation, since I don't remember cringing at the frequent attempts at humor. This girl gives Deponia's Rufus a run for his money. I'd try the 3rd chapter.

The Last Door: Season 2

Detectives! Mystery! Murder! England, My Lionheart Halloween and Horror Noticeably Good Music Victorian Won on SteamGifts

Another Challenge Me! game that I wish had faster walking, though at least you could double click to port through most doors in this. The second chapter definitely cleared the story up for me (for the most part) compared to how I felt after playing the first game (in my last post). I like how, let's say, imprecise the graphics are--it adds to the mysterious feeling. But one problem I had in both games as a result was that I would forget which character model was who. It seems like there were more outdoor areas in this one, and the chapter 2 area is pretty large.

I played AR-K forever ago and really enjoyed it. It’s not going to win any awards, but I thought the voice talent for Alisha was really spot on. She routinely said things exactly how I would expect Alisha to. It sounded very natural.
