DOOM

I saw it at 50% discount on Steam the other day and had to buy it. As someone who grew up playing the old Doom games along with awesome build engine shooters that came after them I was wondering what am I getting myself into with this game. Doom 3 was too different from the previous games and I didn’t like it nearly as much, I was worried that I’ll feel the same way about this game, and honestly in the end I kinda do.

It’s definitely different than the old Doom games which I enjoyed a lot more due to level designs which for me were more enjoyable and fun to play through. This game’s placement of secrets wasn’t as good either in my opinion and secrets didn’t really feel rewarding or fun to find most of the time. Given that good deal of them are missable in which case you have to replay the entire level, I ended up using guide for secrets to spare myself the pain.

Combat was relatively decent, you have to move around a lot while shooting like in the old games, however some of the monsters felt a bit too tanky. Most of the fights were arena style with monster waves which I didn’t like. The glory kills were fun at first, but once the game starts throwing lots of demons at you they get a bit risky to do. Sure you can’t be damaged while performing the glory kill, but it can happen that imps come right next to you and then attack you immediately after you finish, or monster shoots at you while you’re performing the glory kill and the projectile reaches and hits you after you finish.

Story was okay, I would even say I found it interesting and that I am looking forward to seeing what happens next in the DOOM Eternal which should be as far as I am aware a direct sequel to this game.

In the end while I didn’t enjoy it as much as the first two Doom games, it was pretty decent and definitely a lot better than Doom 3. I don’t regret buying it and hope Doom Eternal is going to be better.

Are there any SnapMaps I should give a try?

I haven’t tried any of the player-made levels yet, since I was focused on beating the campaign. Are there any player-made levels (SnapMaps) that you think are worth playing?
