The Last Door

England, My Lionheart Halloween and Horror Scotland Victorian

Challenge Me! game beaten in November. I'm planning to play the second season soon, but at this point I'm not sure I know enough yet to really discuss the story like as far as the nature of the supernatural force goes, or the effect of what happened at the end. I like the setting. If you miss a secret or note, you can replay chapters to get the ones you missed instead of needing to play perfectly, which is nice. It really did not take anywhere near as long as my time shows. I left the game on overnight because I wasn't sure if it saved during chapters (turns out it does).

Never Alone (Kisima Ingitchuna)

"Archaeology" and Anthropology ABC List Cool-looking Educational Folklore & Mythology USA

Challenge Me! game beaten in November, also on my ABC list. I really liked how they integrated documentary-style videos in this game. Features of the environment such as blizzard winds allow for some interesting game mechanics, which develop throughout the game so you aren't doing the same thing the whole time. You have a cute fox, which you can switch to and control.

I should have played this during the monthly theme that had us taking screenshots of animals, because I had a field day.

Nancy Drew: Secrets Can Kill Remastered

Detectives! Mystery! Murder! USA

I had Nancy Drew: Treasure in the Royal Tower when I was a kid. I played it several times and loved it. It might have been my first point and click other than Myst (which I wasn't smart enough to play very well). I played a bunch of the other ones later. But I got the itch again. Since I bought Her Interactive's big Nancy Drew bundle for myself a Steam sale or two ago, I decided to start playing all of them again. I'm skipping the second game because it isn't on Steam and I read about annoying DRM from the Her Interactive store. I will have to buy a few like the 3rd and 4th on the way because they weren't in the bundle. Once releasing two Nancy Drew games per year, the developer suddenly stopped and has been promising the next game, based in Salem Massachusetts, for a few years. Article on Kotaku.

So anyway, this was the first time I played this one. Since this is a remaster, I'm not sure how it compares to the original, but it was better than I thought for being the first. You have to solve I believe 18 mysteries surrounding a murder at a high school. Since you have a phone (I'm sure that's new to the remaster), you can take pictures of the hints that are posted on boards throughout the school and nearby diner. I feel like this makes the game less linear and more cerebral (especially before the camera and task list were added in the remaster!) than other Nancy Drew games, although I think I still completed most of the mysteries with the normal checking out of areas.

I almost bought the big Nancy Drew bundle for my daughter, but she was only 5 at the time. Maybe when she gets older. :)

Yeah, she is probably a little young, but in a year or two you could point the books out to her at the library. There are sometimes puzzles such as sliding puzzles that are still frustrating to me as an adult, or things you have to do quickly. Though to be honest, the one I had as a kid was too hard for me because I always failed at a timed thing when I first got it, but that didn’t necessarily take much away from my enjoyment. I liked the old Sega platformers when I was her age even though they were hard and I couldn’t legitimately beat them.

It’s probably too old now, but Where in Time is Carmen San Diego?/Carmen Sandiego’s Great Chase Through Time was a good game I was able to play as a younger kid.

She and her brother are seven now, and although they play games on my wife’s iPad, they haven’t done much with PC gaming so far. My daughter will still play Disney Princess: My Fairytale Adventure if given the opportunity even though she’s beaten it several times. They actually can help me with some kinds of games…they’re better than me at remembering which NPC wanted what, and which direction to go to get to Place A, etc.

And yes, I have Nancy Drew dog-eared for my daughter when she gets a little older.
