Demon Hunter: Chronicles from Beyond

4/10

My ABC challenge. It’s a bad HOPA. It’s very short, the plot is stupid even in HOPA standards, the main twist was laughable, mostly because it’s so short that I cannot bond with anybody in this game. The mechanics are standard hopa mechanics, nothing interesting. There are a lot, LOT better HOPA’s from the same company, play them instead.

First of all - this is NOT Okami, this is Journey. Or Abzu. Or any other of this kind of “walking sim” journeys. You play as a wolf (who for me looks a lot more like a jackal), and you are able to jump into and control other animals. Apparently you are a soul of a doomed woman, so you are walking with a glowing orb, which is your spirit guard, and you are discovering your past, and trying to understand, why you are not in their version of Heaven. The game is really pretty and enjoyable, although it has a lot of small issues - the orb is very talkative, which can be irritating, especcialy, if you are comparing it to silent Journey and Abzu. There are a lot of things which are understandable, but the guy keeps explaining them, because apparently he expect player to be stupid. Also, I guessed every twist of the game in about an hour, so the big reveals made me chuckle a bit. But nonetheless, the game is very relaxing, pretty, and just a joy to play. Just don’t expect a challenge.

Candle

7/10

A nice mix between adventure game, and platformer. You are this strange guy, with a candle intead of one hand. Apparently some of the people here are “fuzed” with their worktools. Your village was attacked and now you need to save your mentor. There are a lot of classic adventure puzzles, some of them surrounding your candle and your ability to keep the fire on it, a bit of jumping, and A LOT of deaths. Creators were inspired by old Sierra games, because you can get killed here in the most ridiculus ways. Fortunately, you will never loose a lot of progress, so this is more funny than irritating. I was really enjoying play, my only problem was, that there were moments, where puzzles seemed a bit unfair - especcially if there was a path you cannot see, so you simply need to make a leap of fate into abyss and hope for the best.

A Bird Story

5/10

Sorry guys, I’m just not feeling it… I wasn’t a big fan of To the Moon, and this game.. it just felt an easy tear-jerker. I mean - ok, a lonely boy is meeting a wounded bird. I know this story. I can exacly tell, what will happen next. The fact that it mixed with boy’s imagination make it a little interesting, but not enough for me. But what really killed it for me - there is no game in it. And I don’t mean it in a “walking sim” way. There is literally no gameplay. You are watching the cutscene for 5 minutes, then walk for 20 seconds (you cannot even do anything besides what you need to do to progress the story), and then next 5 minutes of cutscene. After some time I gave up keeping my hands on keyboard. I just laid down, watched this cartoon, and from time to time just moved my character to next scene. Sorry, I know many people like this game, but it’s not for me.
