Update 6
Time to pull up the hero template for this one, cause I’ve played another 10/10 game. Summer means PS5 and Switch gaming for me, since my room gets too hot for me to be comfortable using my PC, so it looks like I’ll probably be failing PoP this time, but that’s ok I’ll be right back at it for the last cycle! (btw if one buys a game from humble, how does one know if it’s region restricted??). Also, I keep on getting my steam beaten games numbering wrong, guess I’m lucky there’s none of those in this update haha.
Games beaten:
I need to start this off by saying that I absolutely hate turn based combat. This game though, it's different. It's a top 10 ever type of game. Not only is the gameplay extremely fun, especially with the real time dodge and parry mechanics, it also has arguably the best story that gaming has seen yet. Of course, I cannot end this review without mentioning the OST. I've been listening to certain songs on repeat and it gets even better once you realise what the lyrics mean and how they relate directly to the story (reminds me a bit of how the Alan Wake games did it). This is peak storytelling and the game in my eyes at least, is a masterpiece. I've beaten it twice now, once through game pass since I didn't think it was going to be a game I liked, second time on PS5 cause ofc I had to buy it properly. For those who come after, right?
I mean, I had some fun. Mainly just got it for the mouse mini games. I genuinely enjoyed my time going through the game, but it's not something I'll touch again. We all know this should've been free.
The best Mario Kart. Imagine playing as a cow, grinding on rails and speeding away on walls, it's so fun. 24 players is so chaotic and feels a lot more casual. Also, I LOVE knockout mode.
Anyway, I did pretty much everything the game has to offer in order to unlock mirror mode, safe to say this is a great Switch 2 launch title.
Abandoned. For now?
My game pass ran out so kinda just left this here. I feel satisfied with the amount of the game I played and it was starting to get a little boring, but maybe one day I'll return to finish the story. Tbf I feel like one of the only things I didn't like about this game were the oblivion gates (and encumbrance), which kind of sucks considering they're a huge part of it lol. Anyway, the game looks beautiful and it was so easy to just get lost in the world, like I would love to just live in like cheydinhal or something. I think the side quests are where game really shines. Gameplay feels surprisingly good and fun despite it being somewhat clunky and the levelling system is great. I've never played the original and never got into Skyrim (tho I tried that as a kid with horrible gaming skills so I could possibly like it now), but this remaster makes me understand why people love the elder scrolls games so much.
not including achievements cause I had to use the console when I got stuck in a rock after closing an oblivion gate, apparently a common issue. I don't care about game pass achievements, but if this was on steam I would be raging
Currently playing:
Elden Ring Nightreign (after almost 30 hours I’m starting to feel the repetitiveness, so idk when I’ll be beating this might have to take a break)
Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (looks and runs amazing on the Switch 2)
Beyond: Two Souls (istg I’ll finish this, ik it’s been on here for ages)
Split Fiction (if it was up to me this would have been beaten ages ago, but unfortunately convincing my brother to play is not easy)
Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora
No new steam backlog additions this time I think.
A matter of taste. I’ve played loads of Mario Kart 8 on the Switch but thought MKW was underwhelming when I tried it (just like the Switch 2 itself) especially considering the price tag.
Of course, this was purely subjective, I can see why some people prefer mk8. Though I do think that the Switch 2’s price is justified in terms of the tech it has (look at the similar power steam deck that’s more expensive), the real problem is the game prices imo.
Most AAA or first-party games will be €/$70+ from now, even on Steam or PS5. That’s the new reality. But I don’t mind shelling 500+ euros for a Steam Deck (I actually did) when I can play most games I already own and get new ones deeply discounted.
Nintendo consoles have always been appealing to the masses: straightforward to use with many good (but expensive) titles. They are like the Apple of the video games industry. I’ve spent of a lot of money on the Switch ecosystem and I guess that’s also why I’m content with the Swich 1.
I’m glad you’re enjoying the S2 though and look forward to more first-party games reviews from you!
