It’s been a minute since my last update. Between then and now, I’ve finished a couple games and retired even more lol.

Finished

Metro Exodus (Steam): A great game through and through. I don’t know that it was as good as Last Light overall, but it was definitely better than 2033, which was a fantastic game in its own right. A thing Exodus did that neither really fully explored was making the ancillary characters people you care about. There are so many sad and/or touching moments in the game. You can also lose crew throughout the various areas. I did lose one as I killed too many locals in one area which led to one of the Spartans staying behind to help the rest rebuild. That aside, pretty sure I got the best ending possible. Survived and found a place to chill.

Underground Gossip (Steam): Didn’t love this game at all. I saw three of the endings, but overall, wasn’t impressive and I ended up not bothering to get the rest of the endings.

ALASKA (Steam): This is a mediocre walking sim that I’m also calling a Tyler Durden simulator. Not really a good game, but not a bad one per se either.

Retired

The Lost Valley - Couldn’t get this one to actually run, so peace out.*

Lovecraft Quest - A Comix Game - The RNG is there, and I found the puzzles to be of the aggravating sort. This is definitely more a candidate for mobile gaming with the QTE’s rather than combat, and RNG maps. Plus, it’s a rogue like on top of that all lol. Didn’t love it.

Adam Waste - Another game that wouldn’t run properly. Ah well.

Generation Zero - Semi retired pending the devs finishing up developing the game (which is sad considering it’s already seen full release). That said, I was really enjoying it until the bugs became too game breaking every time I played. I will revisit this in the future though and have left it downloaded for now.

Currently Playing

Nowhere Prophet: - A roguelike cyberpunk CCG with heavy FTL elements. The game is actually pretty awesome, but right now, the balancing is way off leading to some pretty unfair situations, made worse since it relies heavily on RNG as well. So, probably going to set it down for a bit pending its end of the month projected release on Steam.

Mythgard - Another CCG. This one is online only though. I’d say that whereas the dev of Another Prophet says Magic and such games are an influence, in Mythgard, they actually seem to be a strong influence. Also, there is a single player campaign which, so far, is a pretty cool Cyberpunk meets Gat Out of Hell type story. Not really sure when its official release date it, although I’m pretty sure I read it will be this summer sometime.

Vaporum - Although I also own this on Steam, I’m playing on the PS4 for the overall improved ease of play. Really cool Steampunk dungeon crawler. One character and no switching either, which I personally appreciate.

Crudelis - I believe I’m close to the end of a run. Interesting and kind of groundbreaking RPG Maker title.

One Finger Death Punch 2 - If you liked the first one, you’ll love the second one. Most likely.

I’ve only played Metro 2033, and I quite enjoyed it. I haven’t gotten around to Last Light, but it’s interesting to hear that it’s better. More interpersonal/character development in Exodus makes it sound worth a buy as well. I always enjoy games with more story, and it’s disappointing when you end not really caring about other supposedly important characters in a game.

robilar5500

Agreed. It’s nice when you end up caring about the characters in a game.
I do think Last Light is the best of the three, but Exodus is right there and it’s distinctly different than the others inasmuch as your moral choices do seem to carry some weight. Plus, a lot of the game is above ground. Oh, and there aren’t merchants, so your bullets will always just be used as bullets.

If you’re talking about this game, don’t worry - you didn’t miss out on anything meaningful.

robilar5500

That’d be the one. Yeah, my impression looking at it is that it wouldn’t be great, but I wouldn’t have objected to trying it out lol.

Nice to hear you enjoyed Exodus :) Picked up Last Light for the Xbox 360 in this past January.. I personally didn’t love it love it, but am glad to have finally experienced it. It was intense, very scary at times, and unlike anything I’ve ever played in terms of first person shooter. The new one seems much improved though, and am hoping to get my hands on it someday as well.

Besides the story & characters, what else did you enjoy or maybe even disliked about Exodus, if you don’t mind sharing? Also looking forward to your updates on those other games such as Nowhere Prophet (I like it’s artstyle).

I don’t think there was anything to really dislike about Exodus. I thought the gameplay was improved, level design was excellent, pacing was excellent, etc…
The main difference is really that it feels less oppressive overall (although there is no lack for dark and scary settings still), since most of the game is above ground.
The only real knock on this one in my estimation is the same knock on all of the Metro games. They are beasts and you really need a new-ish rig to get the full benefit of the graphics and such. I have a 1050ti and I ran it with a mix of low and medium settings. It would get bogged down a bit still during larger scale battles.

As far as Nowhere Prophet, I’ve stopped playing it pending some balancing fixes. the end game in particular feels unbeatable right now. That said, the dev is responsive and is aware of this, so I imagine it’s only a matter of time before I feel like I can jump back in and try to actually beat the final boss. However, despite the end game being insurmountable right now, the game still is a ton of fun. I kind of had to wrench myself away from it to give the dev time to work on fixes for it.

Sorry for my late reply, robilar! Life’s been hectic these past few days 😳But thank you for taking the time to share your extra thoughts about Exodus & Nowhere Prophet :)
