The great Assassin’s Creed marathon

For many months I’ve been playing a lot of Assassin’s Creed. I was playing the first game for a while and once my PC was built I started on Assassin’s Creed Black Flag and Rogue. Next, I’ll play Unity and Syndicate and will hopefully finish the whole franchise within the next few months (excluding minor games like the Chronicles series).

Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag (completed)

Well, this one was a pleasant surprise. I loved it. I started off a bit skeptical because the story had less to do with assassinating and more to do with pirating. So at first I was a little pissed that it was basically a pirate simulator, especially since the naval aspects of Assassin’s Creed have never been my favorite thing. Even though I still liked them, I wasn’t keen on naval combat being a huge part of the game. However, they improved so much over the more primitive naval combat from AssCreed 3 (it was a prototype, and actually very good until Black Flag came along) and I found myself spending hours plundering ships for upgrade materials. It was addicting.

For the first third of the game I was admittedly still unimpressed with the storyline but it picked up the pace and turned into something great. Edward is one of the best written characters I’ve ever seen and his character development is just spectacular. I can’t say any more about it because I don’t want to spoil anything, but the story really was amazing, especially towards the end. The characters in the Kenway saga as a whole are written very well.

The combat and freerunning is very fluid, but somehow felt slightly less fluid than 3’s. The targeting (during combat, switching targets to start kill streaks and what not) sort of had a mind of it’s own which made combat with a large amount of people a bit tricky. The tree climbing also felt less refined, but not enough to complain about it. The stealth is exactly the same as 3’s, with whistling and bushes and all sorts of sneaky stuff. Overall the gameplay is great and very fun, and I’m making it sound a lot worse than it really is.

The few cities in the the game are beautiful and the small islands and villages are also really interesting to visit. The beautiful environments make getting the myriad of collectibles actually fun.

I could sing praise about this game for hours, but there are a few cons too. This is by far the worst Assassin’s Creed PC port, and one of the worst ports I’ve played. I have a very solid rig (GTX 1070, i7 6700K, 16 GB RAM) and at first it wouldn’t run above 30 FPS for me. No wonder my laptop couldn’t handle it. I found a fix and then the game ran at an even 60 FPS (it’s locked at 60) on max settings for most of the game. However, even with the fixes, there were some parts that had some stuttering and certain areas always caused big frame drops. My one other complaint: Something they had started to phase out in Assassin’s Creed 3 were those godawful trailing missions. Well, they’re back in full force in Black Flag. Not only are you tailing people, you’re eavesdropping, tailing people in guard riddled restricted areas, and guess what! You get to tail ships too! Luckily these frustrating missions are made slightly better with Edward’s strange X-ray vision.

If I could I would write a full scale review of this game but I don’t want to force someone to scroll through too much of my bad writing

Would I recommend this game? A thousand times yes, even if you don’t like Assassin’s Creed

Assassin’s Creed Rogue (completed)

AC Rogue, aka the Black Flag clone with a lot of potential that was for some reason released at the exact same time as AC Unity. Rogue had so much potential to be just as good as it’s predecessor, but it seems as if it was just a side project to milk the success of the naval combat. That being said, I really liked it. I just think it could have been so much better.

Much of what I said about Black Flag applies to Rogue, since they’re pretty much the same game, just with different settings and stories. The freerunning and combat is exactly the same and the naval combat is very similar, if not slightly improved to the combat in Black Flag. Plus there are less trailing missions!

Now to the story. It’s not bad per say but it’s incredibly short, which doesn’t allow for good character development or a good story arc. My main problem in the story is how they handled the Assassin vs Templar war. In games like AC1 and 3 (and to a degree, 4), you really had to question which side was right. The stories did a great job of showing that both sides are not black and white, meaning the Assassins aren’t inherently good and the Templars aren’t inherently bad. I expected this in Rogue as well, and I was a bit disappointed. Rogue made the Templars look like saints and the assassins like assholes, the complete opposite of what the Ezio trilogy did. The story would’ve been much more powerful if they didn’t paint the assassins as the villains. Shay should’ve had to question whether he made the right decision in switching sides to become a templar, but he didn’t need to do that because the Assassins in this game were just cruel anarchists. That being said I did enjoy the story despite its issues and Shay was a very well written character that deserved to be in a much better game.

I really liked the North American setting in this game, I personally liked it a lot more than the tropical setting of Black Flag. Exploring the icy North Atlantic was a very unique experience, as was seeing AC3’s New York in a new light. Bottom line it was super pretty.

The game is a fairly good port, it’s graphics options were limited compared to other AC games, but there were still more than enough options. Frame drops and stuttering were less common and overall it performed very well.

Would I recommend this game? Definitely yes if you’re a fan of the series, and if you want more naval combat

And now I’m going to start playing Unity, even though I’m a bit burned out with this series. I hope it’s not as bad as some people seem to think it is!

Rogue and Unity were released for different console generations, they were released at the same time so that the entire playerbase had a new release to play rather than making one group wait. That said Rogue does still need to be played before Unity to maintain the narrative flow.

char

I know, but I still think it was a very poor decision to release two games at the same time when they could have extended the longevity of the franchise and they would’ve had more time to fix issues with Unity’s engine. The same time release alongside the heavy marketing for Unity completely overshadowed Rogue. And I agree, most people play Rogue after Unity and it just doesn’t make sense from a gameplay and narrative standpoint

What a great marathon!

This is by far the worst Assassin’s Creed PC port, and one of the worst ports I’ve played.

Really? Well, that kinda sucks.
I had my eyes on Black Flag for a while, I really want a pirate game in my library (besides Sid Meier’s Pirates!, which I didn’t even start yet), although I’d just get a Uplay key from another authorized distributor.
I would also like to play an Assassin’s Creed game, I bought the first some time ago, but had to refund it because controls were too clunky for me.

If it ran so bad on your high-end rig, then… I couldn’t stand a chance, with my 7 years old potato (Athlon II X2 245, 6GB RAM, Radeon R7 240 2GB DDR3).
I think your PC would still get better performance than mine just by using 2 cores at minimum speed and the iGPU.
Would Rogue be a better choice then? Or should I stick to the older ones?

char

If you’re at all interested in the storyline, absolutely start with the older ones first. They’ll run well on your PC too. They’re good fun and the stories are great, but if you’re just looking for a pirate game then don’t worry about the plot (you’ll be pretty confused though but hey you’ll still be having fun!). The only AC games with naval stuff are AC3, Black Flag, and Rogue.

I play with a controller and the controls are very smooth, and I can see why the PC controls would be clunky at first, but you get used to them. You can also do key mapping or at the very least use different configurations in some of the games. I still recommend getting a controller though but that’s just my preference. AC1 is also not the best game to learn the controls with.

Your PC could probably run it on the lowest settings and you’d get slightly better than console performance. I imagine you’d get around 30 FPS with occasional dips. If you look at the minimum requirements for the game they’re significantly worse than what you have so I don’t see why your PC couldn’t run it. When I got frame drops, it was always in the same exact areas and it performed well everywhere else so at least the dips weren’t random. For some reason the PhysX particles in the game are messed up and that’s why it ran like crap at first on my PC. I originally had them on max but put them on low and that really helped. If I had turned them off entirely I would’ve gotten even better performance. So there are definitely things you can do to make it perform better.

Rogue is a better port but I think it’s mostly better because there aren’t as many graphics options (and many of them aren’t as high quality as Black Flag’s) and the issues with the PhysX particles aren’t present. Things like draw distance and textures are also worse which would further add to performance. Even though it’s better in that sense I wouldn’t play it before Black Flag.

I’m sorry for the long reply, but the bottom line is if you want Black Flag it’ll probably run ok and it’s the best pirate game out there. I usually wouldn’t recommend this but if you want to play the whole series and you absolutely can’t get used to the controls, start with AC2 or Brotherhood. The controls are more or less the same but feel a lot less clunky than 1’s.

If you ever end up getting any AC game I’m basically an expert on the games and their mechanics (because I may or may not have a slight obsession :/), I’m happy to help you if you ever have trouble with anything, be it performance issues, controls, or even just a hard mission :)

MikuIT

So PhysX is the culprit?
I’ve never used it, as it’s set to CPU-only when it detects a non-Nvidia GPU, and works like crap anyway on anything but high-end GeForce cards.
Havok is way better, it’s more powerful and lightweight, and totally unbiased towards hardware.

char

Yes and no. PhysX makes the game pretty much unplayable, but turning it off helps a lot. It’s still a bad port and doesn’t run great but like I said before you should have no issues running it on low besides the occasional framedrop and stuttering that occurs for no reason

Dandey

if you don’t expect to run it at max settings you can play it decently…played it at the begining of the year on a laptop with i3-4030u 1.9ghz,the integrated video card and 4gb rams and it runned on 20 fps…just at one-two missions it was harder because of the lower frame rate…

MikuIT

I’d be perfectly satisfied with anything higher than 25 FPS, i’m not one of those “60 FPS or nothing” people.

Dandey

yeah…also played bf at the begining of the year and i can say that it would go top on the list for my ac series…my curent laptop would only run rogue from the next games but don’t think that i’ll buy it too soon as ubi started doing just 50% sales on steam…so i will take a break from acs till i upgrade my system

uguleley

Thanks for an interesting read, good stuff for someone like me who never got into the series. I had AC I&II on PS3 and I played a bit of the first one, but I pretty much just scratched the surface. I guess I didn’t have the motivation to continue playing at the time, but who knows if I’ll get interested in the series some day. :)

char

The first game takes some time to get into, I find only fans of the series really like it. Start with AC2, if that game doesn’t get you interested then nothing will :) It’ll ruin some of the story but it’s still the best game to start with

uguleley

Good to know, thanks!

Ghostie

I remember the bug videos released around ACIV, the ship rising from the depths was particularly great.
I still haven’t played Brotherhood, Revelations and III. Would you recommend playing the games in order? I’d like to jump into IV, in particular if September is a Pirate theme but I would love your opinion on skipping previous games. :)

char

Haha yes a lot of times after loading into a city if i turned around quickly enough I could see my ship doing the same thing, just much less glitchy lmao.

Absolutely play the games in order if you plan on taking an interest in the story (even if you don’t Black Flag will be confusing if you don’t know the plot - plus you won’t understand all the cool references). The games are also very very good, with Revelations being the worst but still a great game. If you just want to sail ships and stuff just play Black Flag and Rogue though, but I really do think playing the games in order is worth it!

Ghostie

Alright I’ll definitely play the predecessors first. :)
Thank you!
