The Fire Emblem series was on my radar for quite a while. I've only played the GBA version a bit a long time ago, and now that I have a 3DS, I saw it as the perfect opportunity to give the series another chance by starting with Awakening, a popular choice for series newcomers.

This is a turn and grid-based strategy game with RPG elements. The gameplay is fairly deep and you can't win just by throwing your units straight at the enemies. Difficulty-wise, the game seems balanced quite well, but some DLCs are incredibly tough and near-impossible to complete without grinding. I'm very thankful that it's possible to disable permadeath (something that the series is well-known for) at a cost of a smaller challenge - it's a godsend for those, who don't have the time to restart the mission every time one of their units die.

The story is pretty good, but the characters steal the spotlight. I liked them nearly as much as the Mass Effect 1 crew. They're so unique and full of personality. I really liked to listen to them talk with the others about their past or other topics. The way the game ties those conversations with the gameplay is great, too - to unlock them, you have to position those units next to each other during battle (which boosts their stats and lets them help each other in fights), encouraging strategic play. Unfortunately, you'll most likely miss out on a lot of the convos unless you are willing to spend a lot of time grinding or do multiple playthroughs of the game.

This game is a must-play for any 3DS owner. It was so addicting, I didn't even realize that I reached 60 hours of playtime. I think I just created myself an itch that I'll have to keep scratching now… I can barely hold myself from jumping straight into FE Fates.

Unfinished games:

  • I haven’t played FFVII much in June, but I’ll try to play it more this month.
  • Grim Fandango Remastered has some pretty stupid puzzles like most of the early point and click games do, but the writing, story and voice-acting all seem top-notch to me. Thank heavens that UHS and walkthroughs exist, without them I’m not sure if I would ever dare touch a game like that.
  • Kirby: Triple Deluxe seems just as fun as the previous games in the series.
  • With the last CSD3 territory completed, all that’s left now is to wait for the finale, the Iron Cook Speedway, to release and then I can finally end this several month long journey.

Next up:

  • Hitman GO: Definitive Edition

    6.6 hours playtime

    7 of 26 achievements

  • Mystery Game

    ??? hours playtime

    ??? of ??? achievements

  • Time to revisit Hitman GO as a part of Challenge Me!. I’ll probably play the Android version of it though, as I had some issues with the PC port.
  • I’ll start 1 more game this month, not sure which one yet.

Notes

I’m proud at myself for not succumbing to the Steam sale this time around. Normally I always buy at least a couple games, but this time I decided not to buy anything to keep my backlog in check, especially now that the 3DS is taking a lot of my game time. Heck, I almost didn’t get ANY games this month, until that itch.io bundle came along - I just had to buy it. I still have to go through it to see how many games would I be interested in.

Thanks Rederdex for challenging me this month!
