Oh, how I’d like to make a nice post about this game.. but I’m not that fluent at english yet so have a standard one =P

Let’s start saying that I had not played this before (nor any of the previous installments) so I went into this knowing basically nothing.
Had a quick look at the achievements before starting my playthrough to have a rough idea of what to expect/do and that’s when I decided to try beat the game with the starting health level, as it’s one of two requirements for an achievement (the one you can see featured on the right).

As far as I understood, Shantae acts differently from other episodes ‘cause she lost her powers (so she can’t transform).
The game also assumes you’ve played the previous titles, as there are a couple of references to them and most chars are supposed to being known.
Nothing that can break your game, don’t worry :) Focus on the game instead, which is very good! :D

Given the low resources required by the game I was able to let it run in the background and play it while doing other stuff :)
Jake Kaufman made the soundtrack, which is varied and generally good but can be a bit repetitive if you die/reload too frequently. Anyway, you can listen to (and even download) it for free here (51 tracks) :)
World is not very big but things are well placed, providing you some backtrack once obtained a new power-up.
Graphic-wise, this is a pixel game but its sprites are very clear and colours are powerful. Only time I had some problems discerning object in foreground from those in the background was in the “icy” island (sorry, don’t remember the name) where I couldn’t always tell if I could jump on a tree or not.
Played with a keyboard and sometimes I died because I had pressed a wrong key. Pretty sure you won’t have this problem with a joypad :)

There’s a constant yet “gently” increasing of difficulty throughout the game until a sudden spike before the last boss battle. Going through the tower to reach him is very-likely rage-inducing.
I’ll be honest though, I used a little trick to pass that area but I’m going to cover it in case some of you want to play it and do not want any kind of spoiler:
Useless filler sentence just in case you accidentally move your pointer over here. The review will continue in the next sentence, you have been warned.
ok, as I was saying, I used a small trick to reach the top of the tower as I couldn’t even pass the first “floor” (perhaps I didn’t try enough), and so I don’t have the slightest idea of what awaits you there. But, I noticed that the exit door is right over the entrance one and given all the aspects of the game I think it was something that was done on purpose by devs/designers. I mean, they could have simply placed it way above, why put it right there, so close that you can almost reach it jumping? So I focused on this solution and.. it worked! Combining both the Hat and the Cannon you can jump from lower to upper floor fully skipping those hellish platforming segments inbetween.

If I really have to find a negative aspect that bothered me, I say the absence of quick-load. There may be something more but I can’t think of anything else.

9/10

Achievements I'm missing:
  • PrefectionistDefeated Dagron without taking damage.
Either I'm not good at moving Shantae or this battle lasts longer than the other ones. Probability of getting hit is quite high.
Have a savegame right before this battle, in case I change my mind.
  • Half-Genie HeroDefeated the Pirate Master's true form without taking any damage.
Last boss battle. It has many forms and it's even longer than the aforementioned one.</div>
  • Speed RunnerSaved Scuttle Town as fast as possible!
    Speedrun. HA!
  • Purple Haired Warrior MaidenDefeat the Pirate Master's true form and save Scuttle Town in record time!
A more complete Speedrun. Given the time limits I've seen online I don't think one can achieve both in the same run.
    Not. Even. Trying.

Other played games that fit the theme but that I won’t beat in time

(If I unlocked achievements in the current month, do they count for stats even if I don’t beat ‘em?)

Castle of Illusion

Started this time ago, when I still cared more about getting every achievement rather than enjoying a game.
Paused 'cause it didn't find it easy as I had thought to 100% it. Now I realized it's also partly game's fault but I don't care anymore.
Won't be beating it this time either :\

Golden Axe II

SEGA gave it away in the recent Make War Not Love to people who voted for don't-really-know-what. I didn't join because I was missing all 4 the games they promised DLCs for, hence I thought I had no use in joining. Some days later I get to find they gave away a game I had wishlisted! >_<
Played this when I was a kid and never managed to beat it, it is now time for revenge!
Unsuccesfully tried to ninja a key in the forum until I got gifted one ^_^

Legend of Kay

An sg win, finally started playing it.
Looking at achievements and playtimes, I should be almost half-way through.
Game is not that hard so far, and it would even be more enjoyable without that horrible camera control and the occasional crashes.

@mandrill: as you can see, code bits can be seen through the spoiler tag. And a bit of images too:

See? if you move the mouse away you can still barely see it

Adelion

You certainly didn’t try enough. ^^ The Tower is not that hard. Actually I find performing that Cannon Hat Jump more difficulty than just going through those small sections. As for the character introduction. It is the same for the first game on Steam. I think you would have to play the game boy release to get something like this. But yea it has some references.

As for the remaining achievements. Strangely enough I found Prefectionist rather easy since Dagron seems to be on the lower HP side. But it has movement has some randomness which makes it a bit annoying. As for the True Pirate Master ….. yea that is annoying too. Greatest troubles for me has been the pistol section in his third form (and playing there everytime again …). The speedrun achievements are rather easy and in theory can be done in one go but not without training. So just do them separately or do the collect as much as possible and go for the shorter one. Then load collect the rest and do the second one. Should be doable on first try actually.

heh, I could do it rather easily instead =P I couldn’t at first ‘cause I wasn’t using them in the right order but after looking for hints I reached the top in a moment :)
did you play with a joypad? I felt like I could pass the tower with one, while I felt the keyboard was kind of dragging me down (nothing to do with performance, only a matter of keys layout).

Yup, Dagron can be beaten with “some” tries and a bit of luck, I just felt the urge to move on as I was short on time. Didn’t notice its low HP but reading it it’s encouraging :)
Last boss need a bit more of dedication which I don’t have atm =P
Oh, didn’t thought about the savegame trick, even if I did it for beating both versions of the last boss i'm stupid

My friend said it’s the perfect metroidvania game. Maybe he is right.
About MWNL event: last year I signed up for this just in case and got my wishlist game - Binary Domain ^^,
