In my last update I predicted I’d have finished ACIV: Black Flag but unfortunately I’ve struggled to get into it and I’ve put it on hold for now, alongside Witcher 3, it doesn’t feel right to try and force enjoyment in great games I should enjoy but not feeling right now. Instead I’ve mostly been trying to find games that I can play in short bursts which is something that seems to be more appealing at the moment.

I’d be really interested in some recommendations from my backlog which either have a short completion time or can be played in small sessions.

Dirt Rally - I’ve marked this as beaten which is always a bit hard to classify in non-story games but I’ve beaten the community average times, the deltas, for all the tracks and managed to overcome the dreaded Hillclimb, beating the AI to win the championship, which without a doubt goes down as one of my proudest gaming achievements.

Game Dev Tycoon - Going through my completed game list I noticed some new achievements had been added, thanks blaeo for making it easy to identify this, very helpful. A new “Pirate mode” had been added as an extra challenge where your games get pirated, resulting in considerable impact on sales unless you try and combat this with the latest DRM technology, so you’ve got less income and you need to focus technology points on security, making this a considerable challenge to an already difficult game unless you’re familiar with the best combos and you’re an expert with sliders. It took a few attempts, the start was especially difficult as it’s impossible not to go into debt, but I can mark it as a completed again and this is absolutely one of those where did the last 5 hours go that I can thoroughly recommend.

Glass Masquerade - I went through a phase of doing those jigsaw puzzles on SG a year or two ago… sadly there were some really evil people out there that would pick the most blank images that I lost my enjoyment doing them as you were just sifting through hundreds of shapes. This game does jigsaws right, it takes you around the world assembling these lovely to look at stained glass pieces of art that each took me on average 5-10 minutes to complete. Very relaxing to play with some nice music, absolutely recommend this to anyone wanting a casual game to play for an hour or two at a time.

Mini Metro - And the game I played the most this month… 40 hours in Mini Metro! Another one of those install as I have no idea what else to play and this seems like it might be easy to get into, and I was right. It starts very simple, you connect together a square, a circle, and a triangle, and from there new shapes start appearing, usually more of those first three to begin with, which act as stations, and your job is to transport the shapes from one station to another, the game ends if the shapes start getting impatient and it can get very frantic with game over clocks appearing everywhere, with things to regularly consider like the carriage sizes, multiple lines to avoid connecting two of the same shape, lines or loops, accounting for unique shapes in remote areas, and what upgrade to get each week like whether to go for an interchange for faster collecting/dropping off or some bridges to allow you to reduce pressure on a busy island circuit… reading that back I haven’t done a good job making it interesting, it’s a metro game about transporting shapes after all, but trust me there’s plenty of enjoyment to this game even it might not look like it on first glances.

I like that Mini Metro “description” :D But it is a great game, easy to play hard to master. Finished all the levels, but still long way to get all achievements :)

And i am looking forward to playing Glass Masquerade, it’s been sitting on my PC since the new year :)

In quick glance i saw you have Action Henk and Plague Inc as games that can be played in short bursts, 2nd one being very very grindy if you are going for 100% :D

Joe

Haha thanks, “description” indeed, it’s hard to talk enthusiastically about moving shapes! But easy to play and hard to master fits it well. Some of the achievements are a real challenge, best of luck progressing through them, it’s good how they’ve kept me interested but they can a bit too limiting in what you’re allowed to do, I’m unsure whether I’ll be able to 100% it… I hope you enjoy Glass Masquerade, the 8 hour playtime isn’t an accurate playthrough time, seems like about 4 hours is about the average.

Thanks a lot for the suggestions, I’ll be sure to check them both out this month :)

I didn’t like that there was no ingame info about those achievements/challenges, so it takes a while to check them. Even checked game on android, looks great :D
And playing relaxing game for longer time is not a problem :)

I suggest starting those tons of HoGs you have accumulated as they tend to be really short, Artifex Mundi games usually last around 2-3 hours in my experience, 4 hours at the most. You seem to have a lot of them and since they are quite short and easy they will actually help you make pretty good progress with your backlog.

  • Talos Principle can be played in short sessions I believe. There are many puzzles and you can simply solve a few puzzles and quit. The game itself is somewhat long especially if you want 100% completion but all the puzzles are laid out separately with very easy access.

  • Viscera Cleanup Detail: Shadow Warrior is also very short, like 1-2 hours depending on how advanced your OCD is :P

  • Trine 3 is also a short game that can be played in short sessions. The chapters are not as long as they were in previous Trine games. You can finish a few and quit for the day etc. Though it’s easily the worst Trine game in the franchise in my opinion. I just checked my own time and I 100%ed it in 6 hours, though I checked a guide for some of the collectibles.

  • The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, TACOMA, Copoka and The Silent Age are short games too. Metro games are pretty straightforward with ideal length for each mission and the games themselves aren’t that long either offering about 8-12 hours depending on your playstyle (some missions have stealth as an option). My game times were about 27 hours for each game because I finished them twice to get good/bad endings for the achievements, I also set myself some random stealth challenges and restarted the chapter if I failed them.

  • Kingdom Rush is also a fantastic pick to play in short sessions. Any Tower Defense game would easily fit into that role.

Joe

Oh I hadn’t considered the HoGs, you’re right they sound perfect! I might get fatigued playing too many of them but I’ll try and target a series or two.

Thanks for taking the time to reply with so many great suggestions, that means a lot :) I think this might be what I need right now as I can’t seem to decide on anything myself lol. Plus it helps getting recommendations from someone I know instead of going by general internet consensus.

It’s amazing how you and I have similar predilection in games.
I became hooked since the beginning of the year to Dirt Rally very good rendering of rally driving.
I loved Mini Metro for a long long time now. It counts among the very rare games I backed up from their EA stage.
And while I also love jigsaw puzzles IRL and in video games (like Pixel Puzzles Ultimate) but had never heard about Glass Masquerade, so thanks for the insight.

About your inquiry, I would recommend Picross games, if you like the genre of course : Pictopix and Picross Touch are 2 excellent picks, and what’s more the latter is free.
If you like a mix of strategy and card games, I also discovered Duelyst last month, and it’s perfect to play one or two games. I tend to play it this way and it usually takes me less than 15 or 20 minutes a session.

Joe

Haha that’s spooky! Glad to have been able to give Glass Masquerade more attention, hope you like it. I haven’t heard of the Picross genre but it looks interesting, thanks for the recommendations :)
