November/December/January 2017/2018 Update

Unfortunately, I’m back at university so updates will be few and far between, but I’ll still try to crack away at my backlog when I get the chance!

Finished: The Adventures of Van Helsing
This game was really fun at the start, but for some reason I lost interest towards the end. The characters were excellent (the banter between Van Helsing and Lady Katarina was always entertaining and humorous) and the gameplay was what you’d expect from an ARPG, albeit rather dull. Definitely worth a go if you fancy ARPGs and I’m certainly glad I played it.

Playing Next: Victor Vran (I believe I’m about halfway through it)

Arbiter Libera

Pretty solid hack & slash RPG with great Slavic bent versus generic fantasy, but I was annoyed by itemization and at times weird balancing with enemy types. Also, ending kinda comes out you from nowhere. Good thing they made two sequels, I guess. What did you think about HQ tower defense part?

aclonegeek

The balancing got really awful towards the end I found. I hated the HQ tower defense, but that’s just because I’m not a fan of those types of games/modes whatsoever. What did you think of it?

Arbiter Libera

Pretty much exact same reaction. I think I did it once, defended one more time one when your base gets invaded and never bothered with it again. Wonder if they tweaked it in any way in the Final Cut version, though.

aclonegeek

I’d be surprised if they tweaked it much, but I’ve heard the Final Cut brought quite a few modifications. The only tweak I’d be satisfied with is if it’s been completely removed :).

Did you play the Final Cut of Van Helsing (all 3 parts) or just the first one? I liked it quite a lot up to a point (then I got distracted and didn’t manage to go back to it yet T_T)

aclonegeek

Just the first one, and I think that’s where I’ll leave it since the other 2 parts didn’t receive good reviews. I’m curious where you’ve left off, but I hope you finish it at some point - it’s definitely worth it!

I played the Final Cut, got to 3rd or 4th chapter, which is in the 2nd game I think before they merged it. The major difference is that whole Final Cut plays like the mechanic of the 3rd one, while the separate games had it evolving gradually. From what I know some people disliked the constant skill/ class changes, but FC is unified in that regard.

Interesting. I imagine it must be a lot nicer playing the Final Cut over just the 1st for engine related reasons alone.
