Sherlock Holmes: Crimes and Punishments

8/10

A very good classic Sherlock game. Five investigations, all in original stories style, a lot of deduction, a lot of talking, and a bit of puzzles. I especcially like that in every story you have a couple of suspects, and you need to choose for yourself, which one is correct (and also - if you are letting him free, or sending to jail). My only minor complain is that there is some kind of vague overall story, but it’s clearly an afterthought, and it’s not done particullary good. But overall I had a great time with Sherlock.

Sherlock Holmes: The Devil's Daughter

8/10

This one on the other hand… yea… it has a bad rep, and I clearly see why. It’s much more action heavy, there are a lot of QTE stuff (fortunately most of them can be skipped), and sometimes you are more guessing than taking logic step. But I don’t care - because this game is BONKERS. And I mean it - it’s completely mad, and was loving every minute of it. The scenarios were crazy, one minute I was playing bowling (it wasn’t bowling, but I dont remember the proper name of the game), and the next one I was in the Aztec temple (I still don’t understand how), only after to do some exorcisms in a case or two later. And Sherlock… this is not classic Sherlock - it’s more Robert Downey Jr Sherlock. He is a bit more sarcastic, a bit more fun loving, a bit more human overall. And I love it - he is a great character. Oh, and did I mention that he has a daughter? Those who played Testament of Sherlock Holmes knows what happened, but yes, Sherlock has a child. And I really like his relationship with her. He genuinly cares and loves the girl - which is a bit unconventional for Sherlock, but is really sweet. And I love how during the game things are getting worse and worse and Holmes is losing his self confidence more and more, until in the final he just snapped and raged. So yea… this is not particularly good game in term of gameplay, and it will mad some Holmes fans, but honestly I would gladly play a couple of cases more, spend a bit more time with Holmes family, and I’m picking this over “proper” Sherlock’s game any time.

I’ve only played the Devil’s Daughter (got mixed feelings about it) and I didn’t know that it was rather atypical for SH games. So the others are more focused on investigations? Very interesting, maybe I’ll have to play another one in the future. Do you have a favourite SH game?

For me the best one is Testament. Crimes and Punishments are very good and the most modern - they are the first ones where they put this “choose a killer” feature, Jack The Ripper is OK, other ones just got too old. I didn’t play Nemesis, but I heard some bad opinions about it.
