Cat Quest

Another of my monthly challenges. Very sweet little ARPG game. You are a cat in a land of anthropomorfic cats, you sister got kidnapped, you need to rescue her. And there are also dragons. You need to fight them. The game is this type of RPG, in which you have few main quests, but they are hard, so you need to grind by doing sidequests until you have enough levels. I don’t mind this gameplay, sidequests were interesting, and the whole game had a tone of charm. There is also a bit of metroidvania to make things interesting. All in all - cute game.

Virginia

Ehhh…. This should be a movie. Or something non-interactive… And I normally love walking sims, Edith Finch is one of my favourite games. Virginia looks like a game made by guy, who had great idea, but knew nothing about games. The story is really intence, play like a David Lynch movie, and you don’t really know what is real, or what is symbolic. But this gameplay… Let’s talk about walking. In this game every step is a tiny animation of player’s camera. So, when you stop, the animation will play until end. So often you are stopping half a second after you released W button. Effect - I was bumping into every object I wanted to look at. When you have a note, left click sometimes is putting the note away, and sometimes is zooming. When? I have no idea. Also - notes often will show for a fixed amount of time, and then the game will just go further. I missed a couple of very important information, because apparently I am reading too slow. A pity, because all in all it’s a good walking sim. Just not a good game.

Snake Pass

How nice to play something this original. This is a platformer, where you cannot jump. You are playing as a cute snake named Noodle (which is the best snake’s name I ever heard). You are moving in snake way - so you are moving you head in the direction you want to go, and sliding there. You can climb over things, if you have enough friction, you can use your body as an anvil, when you are trying to catch something over the ledges… Basically you need to re-learn everything, you know about movement in games. The gameplay can be chaotic, the camera sometimes is going crazy, and you need to remember about going back to checkpoints, if you dont want to loose collectibles after every death. But even with this issues - I had great time and I want more.

Dropped. This is a platformer with some cool ideas, but all in all it’s core gameplay is standard and boring. You are jumping, fighting, gaining new abilities, not much to talk about. In I think 2/3 of the game gameplay is changing into more open world metroidvania, which was very cool for a moment, until I realised, that now I need to run through the same platform screens again, and again… The difficulty is done by makind checkpoints quite far away, which reminded me, why I loved Celeste so much… Also the game is trying to have a big story, but also to be funny and breaking forth wall. It doesn’t work. I think I’m near the end, but I’m giving up.

I just couldn’t get down the controls for Snake Pass. Just couldn’t get the hang of it, doing the “harder” moves. Was a neat game, though.

Aquilla

I managed to finish it, but I didn’t collect a lot of coins. It was hard, but a lot of fun.

Arbiter Libera

Yeah, I also wasn’t a big fan of Virginia. If I had to summarize the impression I got it would be indie movie director inspired by Twin Peaks wanting to create something. Sadly, he just chose video games as his medium of choice. I almost feel bad for saying that and railing on the game in my own review because it’s not like Virginia is bad or anything. It simply shouldn’t have been a video game.

Cat Quest

Is it… puntastic?

Aquilla

The same feeling with Virginia. The story is actually good.

Cat quest. You have locations: Bermewda’s Triangle, The Catpital, there is an adventurer named Cara Loft, two mages - Mewlin and Meowgan … so I geuss…
