What did you think of The Beginner’s Guide?

Tempête Joachim

That was an interesting one. The way Davey projects his needs for validation and meaning on Coda and their games reminded me of a line from this letter by Hunter S. Thompson :

What is truth to one may be disaster to another. I do not see life through your eyes, nor you through mine.

Trent

I actually didn’t like it as much as I thought I would based on the reviews and “indie buzz.” But I’m glad I played it.

Tempête Joachim

Well, I was playing this as part of the popularity contest theme of last month, along with Doki Doki and Undertale, and it’s the only one that didn’t disappoint me. Even though I expected them to be overhyped, I found Doki Doki underwhelming, and for Undertale, I just hate the combat gameplay, and I like the story and characters but I don’t find them outstanding so I still don’t really understand the obsession with this game.

EvilBlackSheep

Nice progress! How did you like Danganronpa (1&2), and how does Ultra Despair Girls compared to those?

Tempête Joachim

I’ve played 1&2 before on PSP/PS Vita and it’s one of my favourite series, I just wanted to replay them before I play V3. It was interesting replaying them and seeing all the foreshadowing I didn’t pick up on the first time around (in retrospect, the plot twist of DR2 is very predictable).

I like the school setting of the first one better, as you feel more trapped and it gives a more ominous feeling, which works better with the whole murder thing.
I also think the first one feels more mysterious and makes you want to play non-stop until you unveil the plot more, but it might just be because it’s the first game in the universe and you don’t know anything about it yet.
On the other hand, too many of the characters in DR1 are pretty bland, I like the characters in DR2 much better.

As for Ultra Despair, it’s not completely terrible but I wouldn’t really recommend it, unless you really like Toko (she’s one of my favourites in DR1, possibly my favourite) but even then it’s not that great. You learn some intersting things about the lore (like how Monokuma was created) but you could just read about them on the series Wikia.

EvilBlackSheep

Thanks for sharing your opinion, and for your feedback on Ultra Despair. I still have to play V3 so I guess I’ll do that first and get Despair if it gets a good discount at some point.

I also liked the school setting better than the island one, mostly because it’s more oppressive (and also you still don’t know what is going on outside if it’s your first playthrough). Don’t get me wrong though, I loved both games (it’s also one of my favourite game series), and I’m excited to play the third.

Tempête Joachim

Have you watched Danganronpa 3 ? I haven’t watched it the first time I’m played since I’m not into anime, but I’m going to do it now before I play V3.

EvilBlackSheep

I have not watch any of the anime as I’ve been told it’s basically the game without the gameplay (at least for season 1), and I didn’t want to be spoiled before going in the game.

Tempête Joachim

There is an anime adaptation of the first game yes (not interested in it), but there is also Danganronpa 3 (not to confuse with V3, the latest game) which is a new story arc with characters from DR1&2 intended to bring a conclusion to the Hope’s Peak series.

EvilBlackSheep

Oh, I didn’t know that! Thanks for the info, now I’ll probably check it out before playing V3.

Now THAT is what I call an A+ spread of games. Which one was your favorite? Which one are you still thinking about?

Tempête Joachim

DR1&2 but I already played these before on other platforms. Otherwise I quite liked The Beginner’s Guide, the others not that much.
