This is a challenging, story-heavy 2D platformer. It's definitely one of the more unique games I played. The story is a wonderful mix of heart-wrenching moments, good ol' British humor, surprising twists and unexpected pop-culture references. The cutscenes are beautifully animated but they tend to zoom in on the pixels too much. The beginning of the game was kind of a slog, though - there's just so many cutscenes and tutorials that feel like they go on together, but it gets better later on. Gameplay is overall solid, the platforming is difficult, but not unfair. New mechanics are introduced as you go to keep it fresh. I especially liked the arcade-inspired minigames placed in-between some of the platforming sections, which take great inspiration from classic games like Space Invaders, OutRun, Track & Field or Guitar Hero. The soundtrack is OK, nothing special but it does have some arranged versions of classical music that you definitely heard before at some point.

It's very clear that the devs put a lot of effort, time and love into the game. I'd recommend this game to anyone who likes a good story, but if you completely suck at plaformers, it may be wise to watch a playthrough of it online instead.

If you do intend to get all achievements in this game then I'd recommend backing up your save when you reach chapter 21. There are 2 choice-based achievements on that chapter and you can only get one of them per playthrough.

Unfinished games:

  • Injustice: Gods Among Us Ultimate Edition

    3.6 hours playtime

    7 of 50 achievements

  • American Fugitive

    15.1 hours playtime

    37.3 hours playtime

  • Paper Mario: Sticker Star

    1.3 hours playtime

  • Injustice was okay but I don’t think that competitive fighting games are for me. I don’t think I’ll play this game any longer once I complete the story mode.
  • As a GTA clone, American Fugitive is decent. They could’ve made the story objectives more interesting and unique, but other than that, it’s OK.
  • Gosh when I thought I finally completed Picross 3D: Round 2, it suddenly slapped me with dozens of additional puzzles to solve… not like it’s a bad thing, actually.
  • I’ve heard a lot of mixed opinions about Paper Mario: Sticker Star, so I’ve started playing so I can see it for myself. Haven’t gotten too far yet, but the gameplay feels very dumbed-down compared to past Paper Mario games. Not a good start…

Notes

Another double-month post because I was too lazy to make one back in September. A lot has happened since my last post - I started university mid-October, spent many days working on a major update for one of my projects and did a few more gigs to increase my new PC budget. Still aiming to get that new PC built around Black Friday - though I’m not so sure anymore if the savings are going to be that good… especially since some stores like to increase prices just so they can revert them back to normal and then call them “promotional prices”… but we’ll see how things will go.

I’ve tried to write a review for Psychonauts but I can’t come up with anything good and I don’t really want to spend hours trying to write it while I can use the time to do something better… so yeah, I’m sorry.

Congratulations on all of your assassinations! Take your time and post when you want. I ordered a PC online years ago on black friday, pre-built. I’ve been using it for 5 years now and it still keeps up with the newer games. (Except final fantasy XV, 15. The fight scenes nearly made the game crash.)

Thank you! Was it a good deal back then? Did you consider upgrading it yet? And wow I didn’t know FFXV can be so demanding :O

Zelrune

I thought it was a pretty good deal, and I haven’t needed to upgrade it yet. I can run the Witcher just fine though and I think that’s the most I’m going to need for the next two or three years.
