A Story About My Uncle

**Smooth as butter**
A boy must cross through unknown worlds made of floating rock, in search of his uncle.
The story comes with no twists and turns, and never grows to be more than its intended message, but i did enjoy the gameplay a lot.
Essentially, hook based with a slight mix of precision jumping. And a very self contained straightforward kind of game.
It really is a game that doesn't point into different routes, challenges and trials. I should know, i missed every achievement.
Even as i progressed, every adition to the suit was unavoidable, since the level design was based with those powers in mind.
The laid back approach suits it just fine, i must have done some nasty jumps to reach hidden items, however the game itself was rather easy, the single path itself is easy.
Which is not to say alternating between the powers to clear a area doesn't feel rewarding, much due to some great level design.
Some events don't quite fit, one would expect there to be no enemies, but there is one solitary enemy, and it's a gimmick contained to a small room, like many others in the game, but it this case it didnt feel right to me. Idk, it just didn't fit with the concept, and it was completely pointless.

**"black-humoured...", No No No, raunchy, there is a difference**
Generic rail shooter, the gameplay is the least of its problems. Other than it works fairly better as a novelty if your actually pointing something at the screen
Ill start by giving it some credit. Even though it's a short game there is variety to the levels, and the arsenal. There are two characters with distinct play styles. And an Arcade mode.
It's just never has good, original or as funny as they think, at least nothing compared to House of the Dead. Not having that much competition in the genre, sort of makes it decent enough, i guess.
So what don't i like?
Well for starters, the ex-Navy SEAL has really tedious gameplay. They want to reinforce this tactical character, in contrast to Tony, who is the reckless type. By inserting scripted movement, tactics, stealth, in a game where you dont have control over it. it's certainly not done in a way it would work, therefore feels trite especially when you excuse lack of originality and work on these rather small rooms and then pass it as a joke "Game trope". it makes you look even more lazy.
That idea, sadly comes to mind in other parody games - "lol isn't it silly when games makes you do this random thing...it sure is completely different if we tell you to do the same"
There is also very little when it comes to weapon experimentation. You get 2 weapons per stage, one being considerably better, while the other holds infinite ammo.
As for its humor. Expect most of the same from the first 2 chapters.Lines are repeated to exhaustion and little quirky moments turn into non stop running gags.

More accurately i would describe this as dumb humor. What else could leg humping chihuahuas and tweedle dee's tweedle dum´s, be described as?
Neon

**can someone clean the dirt off the camera?**
The horror genre is plagued, by jumpscares and gore. Condemned, is on the correct side of things
It tries hard not resort into cheap tricks. Some of those ideas are borderline experimental.
Here we have a game from FEAR developer, with muddy textures, and ambient sounds. It was outdated when it came out, but it adds to the atmosphere

STORY:
The weakest link. Condemned does a good job grabbing your interest, but when given the choice, to be constructed to be open to interpretation, when it reaches the end cutscene, it already made his, to be, a huge sequel batting teaser.

Gameplay:
This is an easy game to judge whether you would enjoy it or not. Seen a trailer or a video of the first chapter? well, that's the game between chapter 1 and chapter 8
A first person melee based combat, survival horror.put emphasis on Melee, because they really don't want anyone to get used to fire weapons. Reticle Aiming turn off, No to collecting ammo, No to storing weapons...The R button? counts bullets left in the chamber!
Some weapons are more useful than others as they are needed to open new paths.
Levels are short, rather claustrophobic, AI tends to make noise, while they hide away in hopes of catching you by surprise.
The ocasional investgation in each chapter, is there to break the monotony, sometimes paifully obviously so. But it is in most of the chapters and it is fun to use. Ocasionally adding tension, when you are moving through the level unarmed.
Chapter 9 are 10 are a bit different. 9 is a slight change of location and gameplay, definity more detective work and exploration, while until now it was fairly one way through it
10 is the proving grounds, and i sure hate, the open empty maps, with ridiculous enemy designs, surviving encounters with enemies popping up to existence, holding your ground. Last chapter is as frustating as i remember.
Neon

**There might not be a single aspect of Dreadout that is of its own creation**
And i say that, as what holds this game together. Otherwise, it's probably a relatively low budget team trying to tackle genre its simply not ready for.
Its rough and it shows, the lack of animation makes all set pieces look fairly silly.
But what can i say, it caters to horror fans
It doesn't throw it all to a mixing pot either, its starts rather familiar, if you are used to Fatal Frame games, and the usual Japanese teen horror of th 90s.
The ghosts themselves, are from some folk tales and movies from Indonésia, Thailand, china.
Not sure of what to make of chapter Zero, and its "How We Got Here" trope. Alright,so, Horror still uses it, games especially, need to start at a climax to show its controls, not every game can have the perfect start from Dead Space where shit hit the fan that same morning, and already everything turned into chaos
But at least for me, it doesn't show how to play, hints don't pop up. There is a an actual page that serves as a tutorial, so i really dont get the point of chapter zero, aside from being a trope used in horror

considering that we control a nutcase, she and Harvey are rather entertaining characters, at least as characters without empathy go.
I have issues with the engine itself. EDNA and Harvey was made on SCUMM engine, it's a treat from the past, its the engine used for later (still old) LucasArts adventure games. it had really long loading times, it had bugs, especially during one puzzle, that left me incredibly confused.
i've been unlucky enough, to add yet another one to the list of games that crashed right at the credits. There should be at least 2 endings. but i wouldn't know if i got different cutscenes

Congrats on your progress! I just tried Edna and Harvey: The Breakout and it wouldn’t even start for me :( I suggest you play the sequel (Harvey’s Eyes) though because I really loved it and it runs smoothly.

UlverHausu

Sorry to hear that
Daedalic posted back in 2015 the possibility of an upcoming patch, for cases like yours..maybe give it 2 more years :I

I loved A Story About My Uncle and played/bought it before it was bundled. I kinda suck at these games, and had a heck of a time finishing it! But it was worth the challenge. Funny, I don’t even remember the one solitary enemy.

UlverHausu

It’s a “peekaboo mechanic”, that you have to play with a giant worm at a cave, it was a really small section and never came back again.

Blue Ϟ Lightning

Nice progress!
of the games you played I’ve only played edna and harvey and I have to agree with it being entertaining but full of bugs.
can’t bring myself to try and 100% it like similar point and click games

Nicholas

Well done on getting through it! I was playing this just today. I rage-uninstalled towards the end; some bit with windmills which I just could not figure out.

UlverHausu

Timed jumps + momentum (when releasing the windmill) Boosting helps

I’m just here to say that I’m impressed with the layout of your post. Very professional looking
