September 2025 Progress Report

I did it! 5 games this month - WOOHOO!
“But they are all kinda short this month…”
LET ME EXPLAIN.

I have 75 hours into Cyberpunk 2077 - initially, I HATED IT, because it seemed like every quest was timed and I kept getting phone calls and texts requesting help or me to “be somewhere by x time” by everyone’s grandparents, sisters, neighbors, nephews and their dog. I couldn’t sneeze without getting a new side quest added to my to-do list, and with some quests on secret timers - I GOT PISSED OFF. Never before have I been introduced into a fun open world and then actively punished for playing in it. I stopped. I took a break. and then I googled EVERY TIMED QUEST IN CYBERPUNK, and then I reloaded back to the very beginning of act 2.

I’m having fun now. :)

Anyway, I was planning on beating Cyberpunk this month, but Nin laughed at me and said “aha. no.” so I ended up rushing a lot towards the end of September. I absolutely adored Dead Forest and Song of Farca - so for a sec I was wondering which one would be the headliner - and then I remembered Song of Farca has no replayability and I would 100% go through most of the routes in Dead Forest again so - winner! Pilo and the Holobook was a gift I got last month from ZPE, and I got conned by a bundle into picking up My Confounding Cat is Criminally Cute, which was made by a developer I consistently don’t like. Cavern of Dreams was a last second game I picked to do, because it was a SG win and it was short enough to complete - I literally finished writing the review an hour ago. Overall, the month was kinda “meh,” and I’m hoping October does a lot better.

For the Autumn Steam sale, I purchased Idleant, a cute hand-drawn idle game with one review I suddenly felt passionate about playing and writing about, Meteor World Actor: Badge and Dagger, since I wanna play another Investigation themed game, Royal Alchemist, something gay - as a treat, and obviously, Phantom Liberty DLC for Cyberpunk, since it’s kinda hard to 100% a game without picking up the DLC for it. I’ll be gone the last week-ish of October, I’m heading up to Canada to see the Niagara Falls and other shenanigans, so it might get a lil’ messy. Happy Spooktober!!!

I wish this was a Light Novel so bad.

5-14 hours to complete, Dead Forest is a hand-drawn Fantasy BL Visual Novel with branching story routes. Laki is a Lynx with a curse that’s slowly made everyone in his village vanish, including his friends and family members. With only a few older villagers left, they send Laki away to the Dead Forest, a desolate place not even animals or insects go, in search of a mythical spring fabled to break any curse and cure any illness. Uncertain if the story is real or if it’s just a means to banish him from his home, Laki sets out to see if it’s real, and if not, to find another way to become normal again.

Warm

Dead Forest is a pretty unique VN I had a lot of fun with! There are four character routes to explore, with one being the True End and the most story intensive; with the player needing to complete the previous three characters’ good ends to unlock the special dialogue option to start the True Route – But don’t let that deter you! A little bit more of the world opens up as you complete routes, which gives you the background needed to understand the final route – and WHAT A STORYLINE!!! Sweet, shocking, and unique, it left me emailing the developers asking some character background questions and if a possible second game was in the future! (no replies yet!) Even the Bad Ends are totally worth it, as you can meet special characters and learn some info a little sooner to help you piece together the mystery of the Dead Forest. I really, really love the world and characters Manul Games created, and I sincerely hope more people read this absolute gem. There are NSFW sections, but it’s an optional, free DLC addon that’s still skippable in-game, and uncensored!

Half-Life 2
Amazing story with an exciting ending! Enjoyed the hacking!

Song of Farca

10/10
13.3 hours
28 of 28 achievements

9 – 30+ hours to complete, Song of Farca is a point-and-click interactive novel set in a Cyberpunk (lite!) Dystopia, where you play as Isabella Song, a talented hacker and Private Detective who takes on cases ranging from locating missing pets, settling inheritance disputes, to tracking down suspects and investigating crime scenes, but there is a catch! Isabella is under house arrest and monitored by the police; she can’t set foot outside her apartment without her parole officer knowing about it, so all her work must be done by her PC and through the use of Drones and hacking into cameras. Carefully consider your choices, and make sure not to lead anything dangerous to your home.

hack

I really, really enjoyed Song of Farca, the really cool storyline and hacking gameplay had me hooked, and I ended up playing six hours straight on my first playthrough, and the twist at the end made the build-up and finale deeply satisfying and had me wishing for a second game in the series. However, this game does have its flaws; the replayability is limited, and it’s admittedly much, much more enjoyable with a guide since Song of Farca is autosave only – no saving and reloading! There is no way to get any of the endings easily since it’s determined by your previous cases and their resolutions, in spite of the chapter select. Overall, I still really suggest picking this game up if the storyline sounds interesting to you, especially if it goes on sale, because at that point, you’re just missing out!

Half-Life 2
Cute game with a weird difficulty spike

Cavern of Dreams

7/10
7.6 hours
2 of 2 achievements

5-7 hours to complete, Cavern of Dreams is a short 3D platformer game that uses deliberately outdated DS era graphics to get that cute pixel nostalgia. You play a Fynn, a baby dragon who enters the Cavern of Dreams to rescue his stolen, unhatched younger siblings from a mischievous little bat. There is a central hub world that branches into four themed areas, all managed by a mysterious sage who both watches over your rescued siblings and grants you new abilities as you progress through your journey. While there are plenty of environmental hazards, you won’t encounter any enemies to attack or jumpscare you.

Lake

The experience is generally very cute and easygoing, which reflects in the pretty whimsical soundtracks; that said, “generally” is the keyword – while the game starts simple, the last section of the game introduces weirdly punishing platforming sections. On top of having difficult controls, commands don’t always input smoothly, making some abilities either straight up not work, or go after a 1-3 second delay, making the game way harder than it should be. (Specifically, I’m calling out the ability to launch yourself with your tail after rolling, which I never could apply reliably!) There is also one weirdly placed timed segment in the game that’s particularly frustrating, as it hinges on finding a hidden item in the map and then rushing to it the second the timer starts – making it actually impossible to complete your first few tries until you discover it. Compared to the smoother pace of the previous levels, it’s a pretty noticeable difficulty spike. Overall, I still recommend Cavern of Dreams; even though it can be complicated, you have infinite lives to throw into the literal fire until you do the sections right.

Half-Life 2
- and the Holobook! Really though, where is the rest of the title?

Pilo

8/10
4.6 hours
37 of 37 achievements

4-5 hours to complete, Pilo and the Holobook is a hand-painted adventure game with sticker collecting! Play as Pilo, a cookie-loving red panda who was raised by a human Professor and inventor, Chiron. His latest invention is called the Holobook, a journal with the ability to scan objects and create stickers based on them to document various worlds and, more importantly, show off Professor Chiron’s ingenuity to the scientific council. As his fluffy assistant, it’s your duty to actually use the Holobook and fly to various worlds to record and learn about the planet's history and uncover the secrets of some really old civilizations, and – hey, what’s this weird purple stuff?

Pilo

Ok! Storyline out of the way, Pilo is a cute, easy game with a surprisingly solid storyline, a satisfying ending, and some pretty engaging environmental puzzles. I honestly didn’t expect much out of a sticker-collecting game, but a lot of love and effort clearly went into coding, painting, and overall creating this interactive tale that you can finish in one sitting. I didn’t run into any bugs, and the only con I was going to write about was addressed in the last update. Anyone of any age can enjoy this, but younger kids may have difficulty solving the desert planet’s environmental puzzle by themselves. (Especially if they don’t know what a compass is, or have general knowledge on how it’s used.) Highly recommended!

Half-Life 2
Ebi-hime... Please... the plot! Stop forgetting it and the character backgrounds you wrote!!!

My Confounding Cat is Criminally Cute!

2/10
5.2 hours
10 of 10 achievements

3-5+ hours to complete, My Confounding Cat is a light-hearted LGBTQ+ Kinetic Novel with no choices or branching paths. Follow Aster, a gifted but lonely wizard who has spent the last five years living on the outskirts of the town Auxelle. His quiet life is usually only broken by the string of customers ordering potions, and more recently, a feline taking a tumble down his chimney. Presented with the opportunity to gain a familiar, Aster reluctantly adopts the trouble magnet – only to discover he’s no ordinary stray! When the clock strikes 12 at midnight, the cat transforms into a young man named Blaise, who was cursed by a witch to become a fluffball during the day. What began as a chance to gain a companion turns into a week-long journey to break Blaise’s curse, and perhaps, Aster’s own isolation.

catbath

After finishing My Confounding Cat Is Criminally Cute, I can really only say one positive thing about it – The art style is really charming. Unfortunately, the narrative doesn’t hold up, which is the point of a Kinetic Novel. The storyline is thin enough that the town of Auxelle feels completely empty, as you barely learn anything about it or the world these characters exist in. The plot is so padded with fluff that you can skip through 30 minutes of text and miss nothing significant, and none of the characters, including the protagonist, get a meaningful backstory. After Aster is introduced as the top of his class and a graduate of Oleander Academy as a brilliant but anti-social potion making genius, the KN shows him inexplicably failing to make a basic, routine potion order for a customer and waiting four entire days to work on a potion to break Blaise’s curse – which has a time limit of a week – forcing a last-minute crisis. Not only does this feel like a cheap way to create drama, it undermines his entire backstory and his supposed competence at being a wizard. Aster also falls in love within two days, which feels less like plot development and more like a lazy shortcut to speed the novel up. While not every story can be a detailed novel, My Confounding Cat is the equivalent of a shallow storybook, and there are better novels to spend your finite time on.

Mortvie

WAIT there’s secretly timed quests in Cyberpunk?? I’ve just been going through the main story thinking I’ll just do side quests later 😓

Zelrune

Some of your quest givers or side characters may be dead! You should check up on them!

Mortvie

oh god thanks for the heads up lol

fernandopa

I’m very interested in Song of Farca, Cavern of Dreams, and somewhat interested in Pilo so I’m glad you enjoyed all of those!

Zelrune

I hope you enjoy them!!! I will say though, I followed a guide for the entirety of my Song of Farca playthrough - I’m unwilling to do multiple replays of a 9 hours game that only autosaves ahaha.

Cece09

Wait a minute there’s a sequel to fallstreak. Hmm I don’t think I actually cared to much about that game but still good to know

Zelrune

Tbh I wasn’t aware there was a second game either - which is why they are asking curators to promote it, I guess. I’ll be playing the first game (still salty it’s free) and then Fallstreak Requiem, then 2. I remember liking Requiem but my writing skills have improved a lot since 2021, so I’m really curious to see how this goes.

robilar5500

When you factor in all that 2077 time, you had a very stout gaming month. I’ve really been enjoying 2077, but I haven’t put in nearly as much time as you have yet.

Zelrune

Tyvm! I’m really hoping to complete it this month but I have a ton of irl things to do.
I did complete a really cute ant colony idler tonight, it’s short - but no bugs (except the ants) and it’s completely hand drawn; surprisingly refreshing.
