Progress Log

Action RPG / Soulslike

Had to pause a little bit since I got hooked into Hollow Knight.

Adventure / Story-Rich / Episodic

Just finished 2 episodes in Season 1 — some choices can really hit hard emotionally.

Control Ultimate Edition ⏳ In Progress

Action / Supernatural / Third-Person Shooter

Started exploring the mysterious Oldest House — I kinda like the atmosphere.

Finished Games
Hollow Knight ✅ Recommended

Metroidvania / Action Platformer

There’s not much more to say about this masterpiece — the art, the music, the challenge, and the world design all blend together to create a truly unique experience. Just finished my first playthrough and got the bad ending XD — I’ll be back soon for the 112% completion and the other endings!

Re: Hollow Knight, there’s no such thing as bad ending – the only bad is if you don’t beat the game! Congrats, it’s a great game indee and after playing it it’s easy to know why it’s so hyped (with good reason)

Jztr

I had never thought I could finish a platform game, I just never good at it, I bought Cuphead years ago, but I never finish it, guess it time to also give it a try.

fernandopa

I played most of Cuphead in co-op. It’s so much more fun to play with a buddy if you got one.

Honestly if you beat Hollow Knight, you can beat Cuphead. Both are difficult. The patience required to beat some of Hollow Knight bosses such as Hornet, The Mantis Lords or the Soul Master are comparable to the training and memorization required to beat most Cuphead bosses. The satisfaction is also great :)

Jztr

You convinced me XD — I have to admit, after finishing my playthrough of Hollow Knight, I’ve gained a bit of confidence in platformers. I’m gonna try Cuphead next! Another genre I want to challenge myself with is horror, though that one’s definitely a bit tougher!

fernandopa

I don’t care much for horror, but horror-adjacent action games tend to be pretty good. I really enjoyed Little Nightmares, it’s not pure horror but has a strong horror aesthetic that keeps you on your toes. Hellblade is super psychologically heavy but was a great experience. The Last Of Us is filled with dread and horror but the narrative is really good, super worth it. You got it!

Jztr

Feels like we have a similar taste in games — Little Nightmares and The Last of Us are both on my “gonna-play” list too.
Yeah, horror-adjacent action games are great! The Metro trilogy gave me a few heart attacks though 😅 I tend to get really immersed, and those moments where the game traps you in a dark tunnel full of monsters — with barely any means to defend yourself — really mess with my nerves XD
I’m trying to get over it though. I know it’s just a game, and funnily enough, I’m not even scared of ghosts or that kind of stuff in real life. What a contradiction, right?

P.S. Just realized you made the Minesweeper game on SG — that’s awesome! Another similarity — I’m a dev too

fernandopa

Ohhh Metro is on my backlog. But when will I get to it? Who knows hahaha
Yeah, I’m not a fan of pure horror but when a game is able to leave you unsettled, it’s actually quite cathartic. Recent games I’ve played that have some of that include F.E.A.R., milk inside a bag of milk inside a bag of milk, Kairo (to a certain extent, just because of its eeriness), and believe it or not, Gone Home and Suicide of Rachel Foster. Walking sims are super tense for me. Hypnagogia also had some unsettling nightmare levels.

And I’m the minesweeper person! Hahahah it has been an interesting project. I’m trying to get AdSense set up there so I can buy games to give away on the thread. Fingers crossed!

Jztr

I think I can handle Gone Home and Suicide of Rachel Foster. Added to “gonna-play” list.

Thank you and congratz on the the project, I haven’t play minesweeper for years, I remember playing it on the school computer and my potato pc back when I was a kid. It brings back some good memories!.

I’ve done a coding bootcamp last year, and had been looking for small projects to really work on something real. While I knew the langauges, implementing something is a different challenge, and I wanted to learn how to work with stuff like authentication, hosting, storage, etc, which I didn’t learn in the bootcamp. While I did not work with all of that for the Minesweeper project, I feel that it made me a better developer.

Also it’s a good opportunity to learn how to code with AI. AI gave me a great start on the code structure and some of the main functions, but I still made a point to learn line by line what the code was doing, and build new functions by myself with minimal AI assistance. It’s been a lot of fun.

Do you code professionally or mostly as a hobby?

Jztr

I code professionally, also a hobby, sometime I have some silly ideas and I code it out.

How about you, is Software Engineer your main major in uni, or the coding bootcamp is your entry to software. Curious how did you host the Minesweeper, a dedicated server or cloud like AWS. XD

fernandopa

Nice - I don’t code for work, although the goal of the bootcamp was to eventually do a career shift. These projects are a way of building a small portfolio. I had pretty much never coded until a year ago hehe

I ended up hosting it on Github Pages. It’s extremely simple and quick to boot, but comes with a range of limitations. It was good for a first project, but I’ll definitely learn how to spin a server for myself next time :)

Jztr

Nice, you may try to deploy your minesweeper project to AWS (free tier) as well, with that you can learn to learn how to work with stuff like authentication, hosting, storage, multi service stuff, etc… Many companies are using cloud nowadays, so it also a plus if you want to do a career shift.

I love seeing people play The Walking Dead for the first time. If you choose to play the whole series you have an emotional ride coming up!

Jztr

Yeah, I’ve heard a lot about how emotional the series gets. I’m definitely planning to play the whole series.
