August / September 2021 report

Just a few games were played during August. That got better in the September. We have decided to revisit our childhood games and played some adventures on GoG. I have also completed the whole campaign for classic ZooTycoon, which is one of my favorite games. It’s sooo brilliant even after all those years. I have always played it casually, this time it was a proper “story mode”. I still hope that one day they will put it on GoG or somewhere. Playtime over the years and so would count some hundreds of hours.

Oh, we also completed Sweet Pool. In English finally, took us 30 hours to find that truest ending. Greatly spent time!

Enough of small talks and now to the actual assassinations! Good luck in a new month and enjoy your games!

Through a phone call you witness an interrogation of a young girl named Hope, called by others 390-H. When she gets transported to the prisoners section you are her only hope for getting out alive. Through the security cameras you can watch the surroundings and safely lead her towards the goal. At your disposal are audio recording, private emails and various items. Through them you learn more about Hope, the mysterious facility Metamorphosis she is locked in and people responsible for it. Can you help her to reach the outside world?

I really liked the fact that you are hidden behind the cameras and our main heroine just follows our lead. She is not completely useless though, as she can defend herself or more likely stealthily attack others in an advance. She can also collect items for us, but all the hacking and checking of stuff is in our hands.
Game is divided into chapters. Each chapter is set into a (sometimes slightly) different environment, in which new sorts of guards or challenges, such as bugs or protected cameras, get introduced. That way you have to adapt your stealth tactic. When she ends up in the hands of the patrolling guards, called Prizraks, they lead her to the nearest holding cell. After they leave the room, you are free to continue. If you die in later chapters you get respawned on the nearest checkpoint, which are pretty often. To be honest I felt pretty safe most of the time, one can even say that the stealth sequences didn't offered much of a challenge.

Whole story is built on a dystopian world, rather similar to George Orwell's piece 1984 in terms of surveillance. The mastermind behind the Metamorphosis, their whole Republique is the Overseer (also the Headmaster) Kenichiro Treglazov. His Manifesto sets the course of everyone's life, thoughts and beliefs. The game offers us insights to his mind through collectable banned books and other clickable items connected to his persona. Opposite to him stands revolutionar Daniel Markus Zager, who fights against Treglazov's utopia. His voice tapes are scattered around, waiting to be collected and listened to. If I think about it, there are not a lot of people. We have there Librarian, caretaker Mireille Prideaux, helpful guard Cooper and the commander of Prizraks and some journalist (no, I don't remember their names). Others get only mentioned in emails, on tapes or in some other forms. Prizraks have names, but are otherwise unimportant.

Gameplay was smooth without any serious problems, just sometimes it was hard to lead Hope in the exact position I wanted. The game is ported to PC as it was developed on phones, but I couldn't even tell. Maybe because I don't play games on my phone? Anyway, I liked the graphics and the voice acting was also pretty good. Was nice to listen to some French. Music… hm, now I am not sure if there was anything particular… but the endings (each chapter had different) offered some nice tracks.

So, I enjoyed it. I liked the idea and maybe got the message… but I am not sure if I really did. The thing is, it's all too vague. When you begin your rescue mission, you are eager to explore and to uncover the secrets of Metamorphosis. And then you sit and listen to all the philosophical, political, metaphorical talks and it just gets too much to comprehend. From all the books they were discussing I have read just a small portion, some were totally unknown for me (I think it all depends on the country you are from and the literature you are taking in the school). Some deep talks about them, their ideas and authors went completely beside me. If you like those kind of books, if you have already read them, if you have enough of insight into the issue, it would surely offer you much more. Also I believe that vast majority of gamers doesn't bother to listen to all of it.
In the end, after all that was said in the game, I don't know what is this Metamorphosis (is it facility? is it city? is it country?), what exactly are the Pre-Cals, what is the Arrival they are all preparing for, why Treglazov did what he did? I know that all of this is inconsistent to you, but I don't want to spoiler you, I just have to let it out… Treglazov has no face, he is always blurred, even on pictures and sculptures. I understand that it's because they didn't want to give him some specific design, as that way we can imagine under him any totalitarian we want. If I count correctly he should be a rather older man, he even seemed so, but his voice actor had younger voice - I would guess around forty, that added a little discomfort to how should I exactly imagine him.
The third and fourth chapter were best for me, things were set to motion and there was some "action". But in the end it evaporated. Into… I don't even know. All in all, I enjoyed it, but I think that the whole potential wasn't achieved.

As a new intern, Allison has to work on each department. Many different challenges await her there. She is going to be confronted with different opinions, she has to learn how to cooperate with her colleagues and the hardest of all, she has to learn how to leave the emotions of her work. All of this in the shadow of growing flu epidemic.

The first installment in the Heart's series. I have no experience with the original game so I can't compare the differences much (during the time I bought and played the sequel it wasn't sold on Steam yet). There was no problem playing it after the sequel, you are at least familiar with all the controls and characters. I found the mini-games varied and fun to do. Also I didn't have a bigger problem to achieve 3 stars on them as with some mini-games in the sequel. Story is not as serious as in the next game, but that's understandable as we are just beginning to know everyone.
I have enjoyed it and can only recommend.

A HOG from SquareEnix! O.O

Japan during the 18th century. One night Irene finds her husband Richard dead. Local police chief evaluated it as a suicide, thanks to the note close to his body. There her husband, an employee of an US Embassy, admits his participation in smuggling precious and valued pieces of Japanese history and that the shame is too much for him to bear any longer. But Irene is convinced that her beloved husband would never do such a thing, so she decides to uncover the culprit of such hideous crime. In her search for truth she will visit many different locations - Embassy, police station, docks, Geisha house etc. As she follows little crumbs left by her husband she can rely on help from Kenzo, Richard's friend, and young detective Fujikawa. With them she will try to clear her husband's name and punish the murderer.

Nice relaxing hidden object game with few short puzzles. There are a lot of hidden object scenes, usually one for each location you visit and they get recycled. There is a huge amount of items in the screens and some of them are really hidden very nicely. You have two forms of hints - first will show you the shape of the item, second will show you the exact location. Only used the shapes, but finding some of the items was pretty hard. Graphic is older with soft colors, hidden object scenes seemed a little bit blurry. There is no voice acting, but the characters are changing their stands and expressions so it's nicely lively. Music is relaxing. To get all the achievements you have to play it twice, but it was enjoyable even for the second run. It's perfect for slow casual playing.

Funny and charming little game about three bearded brothers (I presume) and their adventures on the vast seas!

One day our bearded fishermen find a bottle with a map in it. Each of it anticipates a different thing, but to their surprise it's blank with only their island being marked. They go home to ask about it around the village and they are told that they need to draw in it their own adventures. Adventure it is then! As they once more set sail something happens and what they do after that will shape their future. Many times again!

In each adventure you have three points where you decide how their story will unfold. The skeleton of each storyline (do you even say it in English like this?) is the same with different outcomes. For you to see all of the possibilities you have to revisit them. The parts you have already seen a few times can't be skipped, but they are quite short and our bearded trio even reacts to the fact that they have been there already, so that was a nice aspect. Minimalist art suits the game very well as the great sounds and music, very adorable. Writing is amazing and the game as a whole offers some great laughs.

If the game had some more ending sequences, it would be perfect. Truth is that it can be a little tiresome to go through the similar scene so many times, but we played only a few stories each play session so it wasn't so overwhelming. Otherwise it's a short game that will bring a smile upon your face!

Jane and Mike were enjoying their boat trip when mysterious sign appeared in the sky. In a moment they got washed from their boat in a huge storm. Once Jane wakes up on a small island she realizes that they got separated… What's worse, Mike got kidnapped by some mad man! Could it be the lighthouse keeper? So Jane starts to explore the island which turns out to be some creepy ship graveyard. She has to uncover all mysteries surrounding this forsaken place to save her beloved.

An okay HOG with a lot of backtracking and sometimes unclear things to do. In the bonus chapter we got to play as Mike. Also it reminded me a little of Small Town Terrors Pilgrim's Hook, it had a similar vibe to it.

Good puzzle game about a Seer who opened his eyes in a world that orders them closed. To bring the change to the world the Seer has to come out of the depths and climb up the mountain. There he can let his voice to be heard.

I would describe the game as a Sokoban with sound control system and bit of stealth. There are four chapters, each has a different setting and introduces new enemies and gameplay elements. As your enemies can't see you, you have to lure them out of your way with your voice. But as they lost their sight their hearing became much more sharp. And they are also better runners than you. You also have to stay clear of spikes and firing guns. There is no penalty for getting caught or dying, if you don't aim for the related achievement of course.

The visuals are… strange, but rather suits the game. I liked the music. Voice acting is good, pretty emotional. Difficulty of the levels is constantly rising, although even some of the later ones were easier. Few of them were on the other hand pretty tedious and a pain in the back. The hardest for me would be the 3rd chapter. After completing the game you can play New Game+ in which you revisit the same locations with enemies from higher chapters, with new layout or completely different levels (just few). Here begins the double challenge.

Biggest problem of this game is the broken achievements. Sadly none of the achievements for chapter 3 are working and it seems like it will stay that way. Anyway, I marked it as completed, I am quite sure I would open them as I have opened all other achievements.

Gobliiins

Great old adventure game about three goblins on their quest to save the poor king from claws of an evil sorcerer!

Each one of our trio has different skills so you have to figure out the right goblin for the required action - one can carry items, other can smash them and last one can do magic stuff. As they are rather clumsy it's fun to try everything with them and see them busted. Just don't forget about your health, as each wrong action costs you portion of your life. There is no save, so if you die, you get reloaded to the beginning of the current screen with the health you had when you entered the scene. The screens don't take long so it's not a big problem. After successful completion of the screen you get a code which works as a load, so don't forget to write it down.
The sounds were now more comfortable then before, not so ear tearing. X)

It was pretty nostalgic to revisit it again. When I was little and didn't know a word in English it was much harder. ;)

The torments of our dear king never stops! His young son, prince Buffoon, got kidnapped by devilish Amoniak, who overthrew the king of the neighboring kingdom and began his rule of terror. Our two brave heroes, Fingus and Winkle, decide to save the poor child. Their route won't be easy and they have to combine the intelligence of one with the strength of the other.

There is no longer the life bar so you can safely try with the two goblins anything you would like. It's really fun to watch them in miserable situations. XD You have to cooperate well in this game, a few times you have to hit the exact timing in which to perform some actions. Yeah, I got frustrated one or two times…. I hate that cockroach…

The second game in the series offers yet again great humor and puzzles (some beyond imagination). Graphics are nice, colorful. Noises and sounds are still funny. One thing I don't remember were those cutscenes and voiced characters, they were just doing bloop bou bap boo. It's nicely done though and doesn't break your immersion.

Everyone just playing bioshock I should get in there!

Kyrrelin

Haha, right you should! ;)

Zelrune

Congratulations on all of your assassinations! Also that’s a pretty interesting perspective to take on Republique, behind a camera? Reminds me of Orwell. I doubt I’ll be playing it anytime soon, if at all though.

Cece09

Yeah republique is an interesting game, I beat it myself and I had to agree with everyone else I knew. It was always the same thing said here and in the forums, it was fine but as time went on what the hell was it. We went from like stealth to survival horror. It kinda lost its way as time went on. But frankie here apparently enjoyed so thats frankly all that matters

Kyrrelin

I wouldn’t even mind the change in the genre much, but the story development went to nowhere and that disappointed me the most.
But yeah, Frankie enjoyed it in the end. ;D

Kyrrelin

Thank you. :)
Yeah, I really liked that. It surprised me as I didn’t know much about the game beforehand. Sometimes it can be a little disorienting as you swap through the cameras, but it worked well. Have yet to play Orwell myself.

mordsmiez

I used to love playing Zoo Tycoon as well :D

Kyrrelin

Is there someone who didn’t? ;D
