Dear Diary,

Hope you’re not completely sick of my Ori and the Blind Forest updates yet. Remember when I was a total masochist and decided that I would complete a One-Life difficulty run legitimately without manually screwing with the save files? I’ll give you one guess to figure out whether or not I was finally successful or not.

Drum roll please.

And the answer is…

Nope!

Surprised? I certainly am. I never thought I would have made it so far. There were a lot of close calls and even more anxious moments. I got extremely nervous after getting past my all-time longest run in Mt. Horu and I started making a ton of stupid mistakes and slipping a lot. In hindsight, I probably should have continued falling instead of trying to stomp into the water during the last Kuro sequence, but each death is a lesson in itself. It was a really fun and thrilling run, and I’m certainly going to keep playing this game well after getting 100% on it. I love this game too much.

On a side note, messing around with Open Broadcaster Software has been pretty fun, and it’s given me a lot more motivation to create videos of me failing all the time, all the while tackling my never-ending backlog. Doesn’t matter if it ends up having no views, it’s a fun side-hobby to play around and have fun with.

Here’s my latest run! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xa2Tak6moMM

I’m definitely going to make a composition of all the really silly deaths that have happened to me in all my runs. I’ve always wanted to play around with video editing software too. Stay tuned!

Yours Truly,
Tumalu

Oh wow! That’s as amazing as it is heartbreaking! It looked like it was just that one little hang-up when you hit the fire. Are you safe as soon as you hit the water, or do you have to cross the slab of wood? I guess it’s good you didn’t have a mic so we didn’t have to hear your despair…
Did you have Dash and Air Dash? I couldn’t tell.

Tumalu

I think you’re safe as soon as you hit the water, but I’m not 100% certain. I’ve died at that section plenty of times, but I can’t seem recall whether or not I’ve died in the water before. Usually it’s because I instinctively stomp to go down faster, but then I fail to remember that stomp has a relatively dangerous delay in the air.

I decided not to get Dash because a few of my deaths were because of the three instant death beams right before the Dash tree. I changed my “path” so that it avoids as many of the instant death areas as possible. Dash is also a new ability in the Definitive Edition so I’m also not very familiar with how to control it properly. It usually ended up in me getting hurt a lot.

I originally thought I “needed” it for the instant death Kuro sequence immediately following the Forlorn Ruins, because I had a lot of trouble making it all the way across the first section without getting killed. Turns out I can just break the ice with stomp and jump into the water…

I actually didn’t rage as hard as you might imagine, it would probably be something along the lines of “D’ooooh! I was so close. Noooooo!”
I don’t really mind dying in this game, because that means I get to play it again. Did I mention that I really love this game? On the plus side, one run is only about two hours long, so it’s not like losing a hardcore character in Diablo.

If at first you don’t succeed - try, try, try again!

Trent

I never played the original version, so I can’t compare. I just know that I used Air Dash all the time in my playthrough. I didn’t know you could break the ice to remain safe from Kuro– I had Dashed (after dying several times, no doubt).
[Edit: BTW, I just noticed you don’t actually have the game in your Steam library. Are you using Family Sharing?]

Tumalu

I didn’t know you could break it either at first, I just accidentally stomped from above and broke it - instant revelation. That was when I realized that I didn’t need the dash ability. In the original version, I probably made it across 1 time out of 10, so I figured dash was “necessary” at first.

You would be correct! The game is not in my library. Ah, the wonders of Family Sharing. :)
My family share-ee is very into Final Fantasy, so that’s also why I’m able to play Final Fantasy VII, VIII, IX, X/X-2, XIII-2, Lightning returns. All of which are in my games to play list. :)

I like how answer for your question becomes SO BIG when you hover over with your mouse, So dramatic.

As always - good luck. You’re gonna make it!

Tumalu

I was trying to word it so that it sounded like I beat it, even if people accidentally read the text below the spoiler. :P

Awww, what a cute picture! Now I’ll try even harder and be successful next time!

SO CLOSE. Mad respect. o7
You are definitely gonna get that achievement O:

Tumalu

Someday :o
I just died three more times yesterday. @_@

Adelion

Well, respect to your dedication. And I know the pain with no death achievements. How I want to smash developers sometimes for doing them -_- Although it is interesting how relaxed one gets after failing multiple times like if you die: Yea game, right. That was totally my fault there. I get somehow sarcastic from them. Anyone else?

Tumalu

I’ve played the game so much that I’ve basically memorized it. Now, instead of focusing on the game itself, I’m just listening to the soundtrack while my fingers are moving. :)

uguleley

I like your attitude, that’ll definitely help you reach your goal! I wish I had a same kind of patience with really difficult games.

Tumalu

I’m glad I was just born to be super patient and chill. Hope I reach the end soon!

Leaved u comment on the gameplay. An amazing run, too bad u didn’t get the achievement at the very last minute i would be raging probably throwing my kb through the window cursing why my life is that fuc**d up. But u actually manage to keep calm that is remarkable.

Douglas

I’m patience, but looks like you are much more than I am :o and this is the key to get these “nice and great” achievements that developers decide to add to their games :p
I keep wishing you all luck and hope to read about you completing this game :DD

Tumalu

It helps that this is one of my favorite games of all time, definitely keeps the anger levels low.
Thank you for your wishes! Lately every time I’ve tried I just keep dying - so I’m not sure when I’ll ever beat it.
