Well, what can I say about this classic? It's Grim Fandango. One of the best point-and-click games ever made and one of the last games released during the golden age of adventure games.

It's well known for its excellent writing, memorable characters, superb voice-acting, great humor and quality soundtrack, and is one of the earlier examples of games as art. However, just like the other adventure games that released around the same time, it suffers from having difficult, obscure puzzles and not providing a hint system of any sort. It's still far from being the worst offender out of all point-and-click games, though. Thankfully you can always look up a walkthrough to figure out what to do next.
Even though that this is a remaster, it didn't change much. The 3D models got some higher quality textures and lightning on characters was improved and… that's basically it. Backgrounds and FMVs are still the same quality.

This is a classic that everyone should experience. If you don't like point and click games, at least consider watching a let's play or one of those game movie things on Youtube.

So… Gothic 3. A highly-anticipated, ambitious RPG released in a rushed, broken state and later adopted by the loyal community who would finish the game and bring it closer to what it was supposed to be.

Compared to the earlier games, gameplay has received many changes, both good and bad. Most of the clunkiness from the previous games is gone - you can now make potions/roast meat in bulk, there are more skills to learn, you can sprint, teleport stones are much more common, better inventory management, quick-looting, fully-working first-person mode and full mouse support. Melee combat, however, has gotten worse. In the vanilla version you just had to mash LMB to win. The community patch tried to fix it by improving enemy AI so it blocks more often, but it didn't improve much. However they did remove the critical hit system from the previous games, so all your hits do full damage now. Fighting with bows is better, as you can now aim manually. I don't know about magic combat, as I almost never used it, but I heard it's more fun than melee or ranged. Companions act like meat shields or distractions, as they deal a stupidly low amount of damage. There are many quests, but they don't have much variety. It's like you're doing the exact same thing in each city. Bring X of that, beat a couple guys on the arena, kill the animals near the city, etc.

The main story is disappointing. It's not as deep as in the previous games, there's less dialogue and it barely moves forward for the majority of the game you spend trying to do your first main objective. At least the ending gives a proper, satisfying conclusion to it. I would've expected the world to look much worse than in the previous games, given how rushed it was… but it's actually very good! It's beautiful, vast, has plenty of good sights, doesn't feel too copy-pasted and is full of things to discover - there's plenty of hidden caves, camps and loot. The soundtrack is decent. Some of the tracks are really good, but I just wish they gave more variety to the combat music. Hearing the same "DUN-DUN-DUNNNN, DUN DUN DUN-DUN-DUNNNN" every time you get spotted by some boar gets old real fast.

While the community did a good job fixing most of the remaining bugs and improving many features, Gothic 3 still remains inferior to its prequels. If you liked the previous games or you crave for a proper ending to the story, then play this game, otherwise stick to the first two.

Notes

I didn’t have time to write a report last month because I had too much work to do… but good news is, I now have enough money for a new PC!!! All that’s left now is to wait for some good deals in October or November and then I’ll finally be able to give my current PC a proper retirement. Oh man, I can’t wait!

Thanks Moony1986 for challenging me this month!

Traqie

New PC, I’m so jealous 👀 Are ya getting the ampere gpu? That new cards are such a big jump that IMO it would be a waste to buy any of the nvidia 20xx now, unless you’re on a tight budget.

kubikill

Ha, I wish I had that much. Before the announcement I was thinking about getting a GTX 1660 Super, but if the prices drop low enough, maybe I’ll get a RTX 2060 instead. I’m waiting for AMD to announce their Zen 3 CPUs as well, hoping for a price drop for the Ryzen 5 3600.

skanda

I just ordered a 3600. :D They’re already on a small discount in some places, might as well check your local shops. I doubt the prices would drop that significantly since it’s already quite a cheap CPU. Maybe I’m wrong and I’ll kick myself in a few months. :thisisfine:

kubikill

Nice! Hopefully it will serve you well. Yeah, there are small discounts every now and then, but since the big sales are coming soon, I figured I may as well wait a bit longer. The prices of RAM and SSDs in general are supposed to drop as well this quarter, due to oversupply.

skanda

Yeah I heard that about RAM and SSDs as well. But since 16GB of RAM was only 60€ for Corsair Vengeance 3600 CL18 I just couldn’t resist. :D I’m only replacing half of my PC, it makes more sense to wait for you if you’re building a completely new PC - saving even just 10% on each component really adds up when there’s a lot of them.

kubikill

That’s a pretty good deal :) Yeah, it does add up… and those savings can be used to get something better for the same price :)

Traqie

You could wait for 3060 announcement. Last time they announced 2060 & 1060 a few weeks after xx70/80. 3090 is just a Titan gpu with new name, so there’s still one model missing in the family :)

kubikill

There’s still plenty of time before the sales begin so we’ll see what happens :)

Vito

I’m looking into buying a new PC myself right now, but I’m just lost with selecting all the components. The last time I bought a new PC is so lang ago and I did not keep up to date with the hardware development at all. I was even considering buying a pre-built PC shortly, something I have never done before. I hope you find a good configuration in your price range and can give your old PC a proper retirement :)

I’m always confused by the red bar in the Hitman GO game box. At first glance I always assume it’s a game in the Won’t Play category :D I never played the Gothic series, but all my friends seem to agree that it was all downhill from Gothic 2. Sad to see such a beloved game series to be ruined. I still have the Gothic games in my backlog, but my god, are they old by now…I really tread playing them. And if I remember correctly I already posted something along those lines when you played the first part!

kubikill

Thanks! You should check out PCPartPicker. You can pick parts for your PC there, check prices, reviews, compatibility or even see builds made by other users. It often comes in handy :) There are also lots of guides on Reddit. You may also want to wait for the sales during Prime Day in October or Black Friday in November.

Yeah, now that you mention the red bar, it does seem confusing xD

Yeah, it sucks that they ruined the Gothic series :( Fortunately there’s still the Risen series, which serves as a spiritual successor to Gothic (which, funnily enough, also stopped on its 3rd entry because it wasn’t as good). There’s also a new Gothic remake in development (which I hope they won’t screw up… it may be our last chance to get more Gothic games).
I don’t fault you for not playing Gothic, it’s not exactly a game that aged well or a game that anyone could pick up easily. It’s just like System Shock, which I abandoned this month. I just couldn’t continue playing it because of how clunky it was (despite all the improvements the devs added in the enhanced edition). I can handle Gothic or Shenmue levels of clunkiness, but this?

Vito

Damn, I was planning to finally finish getting a new PC in September, but you make a rather good argument about the upcoming sales…maybe I’ll postpone it a bit more. Thank you for the link and the advice, I will look into that :)

Since I haven’t played Gothic I’m not that emotionally invested in the new Gothic game, but I’ve already heard a lot of opinions among my RL friends, ranging from carefully optimistic to “I can already tell you now that it’s going to be completely awful”. It’ll be interesting to see the reactions once it releases. For the Gothic fans I hope for a good remake!

Yeah, it really depends on the game. Some games are okay, even though they are quite old, others are really a drag to play. I’m currently playing the first Galactic Civilizations game and unfortunately it belongs in the latter category.

kubikill

Glad I could help :)

Well I’d fit into the “carefully optimistic” group. The fact that they made such a big, free demo and collected surveys from many people convinces me that they’re serious about making a good game, but I’m not excited enough to preorder it or buy it shortly after release. We’ll see how it turns out :)

I looked up Galactic Civilizations and oh goodness, you’re right… I don’t think I could withstand it for long.
