Back-Log #4
May, 2017

Posted: 9th June, 2017

So I had my semester exams this last month.
And I couldn’t pay as much attention to gaming.
(I’m just done with my degree college and I’m freaking out!! (ಥ﹏ಥ) )
However, I’ve racked up quite a number of new games in my library this month.(Show/Hide)

  1. Trent read in my last post how I didn't like the first HOG I had played and that made him sad and so he gave me these. Thanks, Trent! (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧
If you're reading this, I'm starting Grim Legends now :) It's interesting how this month's theme is also HOG based.
  2. SevenDeck gave me these 'cause he thinks I'm awesome ( ▀ ͜͞ʖ▀)

In contrast, I only got the time to complete one game, The Turing Test. (Thanks SevenDeck! Loved the game!)

About this last month's multiplayer theme...

I’m generally a very shy person and I avoid multiplayer games for a variety of reasons.(Show/Hide)

  1. You can't learn on your own. You've to play with random strangers across the world just to learn how to.
I mean yeah, they generally have tutorials, but playing with AI can't be the same as with real players, right?
  2. These games generally require ninja-like reflexes and super-quick thinking and decision-making and I'm just a thick potato.
  3. The thought that I'll be a dead weight on my team that is randomly cooked out of strangers picked from all over the world just beats me.
Not to mention the fear of being judged by those random strangers.
  4. It requires tremendous effort to be a pro and then you won't wanna quit.
  5. Also, it may involve talking with those strangers and I'm not comfortable with that either XD

If it weren’t for the monthly theme, it would’ve remained that way. But when the theme came out, I was like, “F*ck it, let’s try this out!”
And I’m glad that I did. (Not that those reasons no longer exist. Multiplayer is still a scary business. I’m just glad ‘cause I had fun)
I found this cool friend (SevenDeck) to play MinionMasters with, which I wanted to try out for a long time.
And then there was the Rocket League multiplayer event XD
Fortunately, RL was free-to-play that very weekend we had the event decided. How convenient! :D
Though now that I think about it, I guess I was the only one to participate who didn’t own a copy back then ( ゜-゜)
And although I started a complete noob at both Minion Masters and RL and SevenDeck already had a good experience, he was very patient with me and even gave me tips and encouragement and was very polite while beating my *ss XD
Arigatou, Senpai! XD

All in all, I only got to play multiplayer during the starting few days but it was really fun and I feel a little more confident about myself (I guess ^^’ ).
So thanks, Nelly and everyone responsible for the event ( ͡ᵔ ͜ʖ ͡ᵔ )

Also, an important lesson I learned this month:
When someone tries to get you into something and say “Hey, I’m not that great at it either!” as an assurance, IT’S A TRAP! Don’t fall for it!
If they weren’t that great, they wouldn’t be trying to get you into it.

PS. No, I don’t make bridges for a living SevenDeck (ಠ‿ಠ)

Game Review (Show/Hide)

The Turing Test

12.7 hours of playtime, 15 of 15 achievements
Portal Lite with some deep sh*t on consciousness

You're probably hearing this for the umpteenth time, but here I say it again, if you liked Portal you'll like The Turing Test as well.
The gameplay is very similar, yes. You have a special gun and you solve puzzles with it and go from one room to the next.

But what is interesting about this game is its premise.
You're on Jupiter's moon, Europa, and the ground team is missing. You wake up from your cryogenic sleep as Ava and you're sent by T.O.M. (the AI) to the ground station to find the team. As you pass through each room, you get more and more information about what happened there.
Right from the start, the game presents you with a question - If we build machines with an advanced AI that can mimic human behavior, would that mean they can think and feel just like us? Would they be considered alive or conscious just like us?
And whether machines could have consciousness or not, how would that affect our human society? And how do we even determine if something has consciousness or not?
The game presents many points on either side of the argument throughout.
It somewhat reminded me of the anime Time of Eve.
(I believe you will have to read all the notes and stuff in the game to really appreciate this)

Now yes, this game isn't as big as Portal.
It's not as long as Portal. The puzzles are easier. And GLaDOS could eat TOM for her breakfast.
But as a standalone game, I did not find it lacking. I enjoyed it in fact.
My friend (SevenDeck) calls it 'Portal Lite' and I feel that's pretty accurate.

Screenshots

I can see where this is going. If you've ever watched horror movies, TAKE THE CUE AVA! Your life and the survivors lives are at risk!
We keep making scientific advancements with a sense of purpose. But the more we advance, the deeper we fall into an existensial crisis.
The silence of this moment got me.
Consciousness is a biological property like digestion or photosynthesis. Still can't wrap my head around this.
How Machines Work: Plasma Machine Gun (or whatever the heck this is)
Red pill or blue pill, Ava?

PS: You can find the same review on Steam here. So if you like it, rate it up maybe?

miroe250

Congrats for your degree! What was your specialty.
I’m currently in the middle of the exam session and it’s fucking hardcore T_T

codasim

Building bridges, although he is going to branch out to tunnel networks.
There is a niche market for it so it seems

masquerade

Dafuq XD
And this is how, ladies and gentlemen, rumors are spread! XD

masquerade

Engineering! In Computer Science ^^’ What about you?
Just hang on mate! That moment when you write the last word of your last exam. That blissful moment when you know the war is finally over and you can go back home to your fam, look up for that moment.
It’ll come to you, my friend. I believe in you! (づ。◕‿‿◕。)づ

PS. Don’t ask where bridges and tunnels come into play!

miroe250

I’m studying Telematics, which I guess it’s close to computure science.
I’m really waiting for that moment, but there is going to be a lot of work until then.

About the bridges and tunnels, when I saw that someone replied to my comment I forgot who was OP. It was strange for me becasue I though why he is reffering to himeself as “he”. It was really strange until now when I matched your comment with the post.
Please tell me what’s up with the bridges and the tunnels :D

masquerade

I’m soo sooo sorrry for replying this late m(._.)m

If you’re still around, I had never heard of Telematics before ^^’ So, I’d like to know what kind of subjects you have.
I believe your exams must be over by now XD I hope you did well :’D

And since you asked, (emphasis on the fact that YOU had asked for this XD ) when SevenDeck had asked me what I do, I told him I’m studying to be an engineer. And from there he went on and connected it to Poly Bridge and made up this bridge and tunnel making job for me XD

miroe250

Yeah no worries and yes I’m still around.
To be honest I don’t have complete knowledge of what I’m actually studying. So I will just post 2 link in hope you will understand a little what I’m studying :D
1. Wiki
2. Some article

@ The bridge thing: lol

Trent

Just finished The Turing Test last month as well (an SG win!). Nice game. Up-voted your review!
I never play multiplayer games for all of the reasons you indicated– plus the need to coordinate times/schedules with people, often many time zones away. Plus the fact that “my time is not really my own” to a large degree makes it tricky. Also, I’m slow as hell and nobody would want to co-op with me. :p

masquerade

Ooh! Thanks for the upvote! (^_^)
And I know, I even commented on some of your screenshots remember? :P

And yeah I understand. during the last month (and even this month actually) I didn’t have college or job as such.
So while I did have to study for the exams, I had all that time to use at my own discretion.
I would’ve probably had to co-ordinate schedules too, otherwise!

BTW, Grim Legend’s is AWESOME! It got me hooked for 3hrs straight the first time I played it.
So very different from Crystals of Time.
Plus it’s got a sweet little kitten helper! Instant buy for me! (✿´‿`)

Also BTW, looking at this month’s list of games made me realize I did play Morphopolis long ago.
And I loved it. The music was calm and the art was awesome!
I had completely forgotten about it. I guess I didn’t even know what HOG’s are back then ^^’
Have you played it?

codasim

Congratz on making a post!
Put more effort in it than me :)
Need to work on my script making skills

masquerade

Well, it’s a monthly thing anyway. So I do get enough break to refuel my batteries I guess?
Some people put so much more effort though. Like, have you seen Arbiter’s posts? Look at his/her headers (*_*)

Oh and about the script making skills, well, y’know you can always come to the professional for help, right? (☞゚∀゚)☞
