Back-Log #5
June 2020

Posted: 5th July 2020

Whoops! I've been away from BLAEO for a long time now! My last post was about 3 years ago!

Basically, a lot has been happening in life, and I've been unable to find enough time for gaming.
During the 3 years, I graduated and got a degree, got my first IT job and then switched jobs twice (´∀`;)

However, due to the lockdown and the resulting WFH, I believe I can finally start gaming regularly again.
I've decided to call Wednesday and Saturday my game-days.

With that out, I racked up 3 games this last month. (Show/Hide)

  • Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice

    SevenDeck's gift

  • Kao the Kangaroo: Round 2

    Was free on Steam

  • Injustice: Gods Among Us Ultimate Edition

    Was free on Steam

I tried to play Hellblade, but my rusty laptop could barely give me 15 FPS. ON LOW GRAPHIC SETTINGS! It was unplayable. (Sorry SevenDeck! (´д`) )

Also, I recently learnt about SteamPlay and Proton, and the efforts Steam is putting to enable Linux users enjoy gaming.

Using SteamPlay, I could play 100% Orange Juice (a native Windows game) on Manjaro Linux.
And I had a blast playing with my friends, SevenDeck and Senpai. I don't think SevenDeck will say the same though. He's not very good with dice apparently.

Currently, I'm playing Steins;Gate - another Windows game on Manjaro Linux.
I've watched the anime years ago, and am very excited to get my heart crushed again.. and again.. and again.. ad infinitum ( ๑ʘ‿ʘ)

Here’s my review for 100% Orange Juice

Game Review (Show/Hide)

100% Orange Juice

16.5 hours of playtime, 16 of 220 achievements
Awesome board game; if you have friends

You might initially feel that the game is too complex with various cards, effects, characters, normas, etc. But, by the time you complete your second game, you'll get the hang of it.
It's not really that complex.
And plus, they make you read about 40 slides explaining the game. So.. XD
The slides make a lot more sense after your first game though.

The main story is pretty short. Just 5 games (+2 extra).
And doesn't make much sense. Just a bunch of characters making up weird excuses to play a game of dice.
A single game could be as short as 15 minutes or as long as 2 hours!

And just like any board game, it's not much fun playing alone.
But, you can have a blast while playing it with your friends!
Chasing your friends, defeating them, stealing their stars and then winning the game! Priceless XD
Easy to lose track of time when playing in group! :'D

You could also play co-op, where you and your friends gang-up on an over-powered boss.

Me. Tired of putting up with the year 2020.
Locked at home IRL. Having beach fun online!
The day I became SevenDeck's archnemesis.

PS: You can find the same review on Steam here. So if you like it, rate it up maybe?

Welcome back to BLAEO! Congratulations on the life achievements :D

I played Steins;Gate last year and loved it to bits! Super eager to see your review on it now ^^

Hey man! Thanks for the kind words! :)

You’re welcome! :3

Steam Play and Proton are really nice. I’ve successfully ditched Windows because of them.

masquerade

I intend to do the same XD
I only need Windows for Microsoft Word now.
‘cause if I draft my resume or presentation in something else, and then it looks weird on Microsoft Word/Presentation - which majority of people use, the consequences could be really bad.

Yeah, it’s not easy, I’ve been on a journey to get away from Microsoft and Google, and while I’ve found some pretty good alternatives, things like Office can indeed be a problem. But honestly, I just use LibreOffice, and if I have to send a document to someone I send them a PDF. lol

masquerade

LOL. Well I don’t what’s it like now.. I tried LibreOffice during my college days - that’s about 4 years back. At that time, we had a lot of documents and stuff to prepare. And I had found that switching between Word and LibreOffice would mess up the formatting and alignment.
Even today, I use FreeOffice instead of LibreOffice ‘cause I read that it’s the most compatible alternative to Microsoft Office. Haven’t yet been required to use it much though.

Btw, you said you’re on a journey to get away from Microsoft and Google. So Android, Google Search, Gmail, Google Maps.
Just being curious. How many have you been able to ditch?

rafaelgomesxyz

These days, if multiple people need to work on the same document, I feel like it’s much easier to just use Google Docs or Office Online, or another cloud-based solution. This way people aren’t required to use any specific operating system. It’s what we do in my university.

  • Android - I just never log in with a Google account and I don’t use the Play Store (I download APKs manually).
  • Google Search - I use Duck Duck Go as my primary search engine, but there are a few times when I have to use Google because DDG doesn’t give me accurate results (mostly when I need to do an exact search with double quotes, which DDG is pretty bad at). And bangs are really nice.
  • Gmail - Fully ditching Gmail is nearly impossible for me (Google Docs, YouTube, etc.), but I’ve been using ProtonMail as my primary email and I’m pretty happy with it, as my emails are fully encrypted.
  • Google Maps - I don’t use maps very often.

There’s a cool site that lists some popular alternatives: https://nomoregoogle.com/

Welcome back! :D

Thanks man! :D
